Ankle Strength And Functional Limitations In Children And Adolescents With Type I Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Angela Caudill, Ann Flanagan, Sahar Hassani, Adam Graf, Ruta Bajorunaite, Gerald F. Harris, Peter A. Smith

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: To determine whether children with type I osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) exhibit ankle plantar flexor weakness and whether this correlates with physical function.

Methods: Twenty children and adolescents with type I OI and 20 age-matched controls (age 6-18 years) participated in a single evaluation session. Data included strength assessment, Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire, Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI), and Faces Pain Scale—Revised.

Results: Ankle plantar flexor weakness was evident in the OI group compared with the control group. Heel-rise strength correlated with ankle isometric plantar flexion strength. Limitations in PODCI subscales—sports and physical function and pain/comfort—are present in the …

Review Of: The Integrated Nervous System: A Systematic Diagnostic Approach, Mary B. Downs Oct 2010

Review Of: The Integrated Nervous System: A Systematic Diagnostic Approach, Mary B. Downs

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Written by a neuroanatomist, a pediatric neurologist, and an adult neurologist, The Integrated Nervous System is a problem-based text written for an introductory neuroscience course for medical and allied health students. The format is patient-centered and focuses on the effects of neurological disorders, the methodology of diagnosis, and patient outcomes. This book is unusual in the field of neuroscience texts in that, in addition to teaching basic and clinical neuroscience, it also stresses the psychological and psychosocial problems of neurological patients and the roles of various health care professionals in treatment and rehabilitation.

Remembering To Remember And The Consequences Of Forgetting: The Role Of Prospective Memory In Consumer Intentions, Eyad M. Youssef Oct 2010

Remembering To Remember And The Consequences Of Forgetting: The Role Of Prospective Memory In Consumer Intentions, Eyad M. Youssef

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Picking up your dry cleaning after work, returning library books before the due date, picking up a friend at the airport; all of these tasks have one underlying feature that links them together. The tasks cannot be completed when the initial intention is formed. Prospective memory can be defined as remembering to remember (Winograd, 1988). It can also be defined as either remembering to do something at a particular moment in the future or as the timely execution of a previously formed intention (Kvavilashvili and Ellis, 1996). Remembering to do things (prospective memory) is just as much a use of …

Law And Mental Health: A Relationship In Crisis?, Sheila Wildeman Oct 2010

Law And Mental Health: A Relationship In Crisis?, Sheila Wildeman

Dalhousie Law Journal

What is the significance of the rule of law to the area of professional knowledge and practice that is "mental health"-or to the interaction of those two aspirational, one might say euphemistically-named social systems: the mental health and justice systems? This question centres upon the rule of law-specifically, I suggest (as I relate further in closing), a thick conception of the rule of law grounded in an ideal of state-subject reciprocity-and not, or not directly, upon the individual and social good ofhealth. It is this overarching question that I wish to pursue in setting the stage for the two lectures …

Henry James Rides Again, Sarah Wadsworth Oct 2010

Henry James Rides Again, Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

This essay explores Henry James's friendship with Alice Bartlett, a favorite companion in equestrian adventures during James's 1873 residence in Rome. Reading James's travel essay "Roman Rides" in the context of the mutual friendship of James, Bartlett, and the Emersons suggests that Bartlett profoundly influenced James, albeit in oblique, unacknowledged, and sometimes belated ways. "Roman Rides," to which Bartlett provided impetus, presents a textual response to the Roman Campagna that reflects James's early engagement with Emersonian Transcendentalism. This response reverberates, in transmuted form, in the fiction of the late, modern James, as revealed in the tale "The Great Good Place."

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen Oct 2010

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A wavelet neural network (WNN) technique rs developed for electroencephalogram (EEG) artifact removal without electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. The algorithm combines the universal approximation characteristics of neural networks and the time/frequency property of wavelet, where the neural network was trained on a simulated dataset with known ground truths. The contribution of this thesis is two-fold. First, many EEG artifact removal algorithms, including regression based methods, require reference EOG signals, which are not always available. To remove EEG ai1ifacts, a WNN tries to learn the characteristics of the artifacts first and does not need reference EOG signals once trained. Second, WNNs are …

Quality Of Life Despite Back Pain: A Phenomenological Study, Margaret B. Blair

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The investigator in this phenomenological study examined the lived experience of Quality of Life (QOL) in 15 Registered Nurses (RNs) with chronic back pain (CBP) participating in structured journal writing. Hermeneutic analysis of interviews and journals revealed eight themes under two domains: Making Normal (Fighting and Denying; Being Consumed: Anger and Frustration; Surviving the Three Ds: depression, devastation, and despair; and Choosing, Adapting, and Accepting) and Living with the Shadow (Losses and Limitations, Being Less than Whole, Having Intimate Knowledge, and Living Through Fatigue). The essence of the experience is Dancing with the Shadow: Re-Visioning Quality of Life. The Shadow …

Pilot Perception Of Light Emitting Diodes Versus Incandescent Elevated Runway Guard Lights, Hilary Stevens Oct 2010

Pilot Perception Of Light Emitting Diodes Versus Incandescent Elevated Runway Guard Lights, Hilary Stevens

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Pilots must understand and be aware of the purpose of each airport sign, light and marking, for there are numerous. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning on replacing the current incandescent lighting with far more economical LED airport lighting. In preparation for this change, two experiments were conducted for this thesis. Experiment 1 attempted to determine what pilots know about the meaning of the signs, markings and lights on the taxiways and runways through a questionnaire that was developed with the FAA. Experiment 2 evaluated pilot perception of LED lighting compared to current incandescent elevated runway guard lights.

The …

The Image – By Any Means, Richard Minard Oct 2010

The Image – By Any Means, Richard Minard

Theses

Art is inherently a reflection of the human condition. As I am working, my intention is to make images that, at the very least, capture the audience's attention. By adding layers and fracturing the images, I want the audience to see through various visual relationships. These visual relationships can be interpreted as a metaphor of the often hectic and unstable qualities of daily life. As the human figure is my connection to the work, it also serves as the viewer's connection. The blending of media and mixing up of figurative representation with abstraction is my attempt to challenge the viewer …

The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi Oct 2010

The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi

Theses

My thesis investigates the phenomenon of human aspiration in life and was conceived from the new perspective I have about myself and my pursuits in a foreign country. Originally from Korea, I relocated to the United States and during this time asked myself many questions to determine my goal. When I was young, adults would ask me about my future even though I was not yet old enough to think logically about such questions. "What do you want to be?" they would ask. "What is next?" These are common questions in my country. I assume there are many different reasons …

The Impeding Role Of Initial Unrealistic Goal-Setting On Training Performance: Identifying Underpinning Self-Regulatory Processes And Solutions, Robert C. Brusso Oct 2010

The Impeding Role Of Initial Unrealistic Goal-Setting On Training Performance: Identifying Underpinning Self-Regulatory Processes And Solutions, Robert C. Brusso

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The importance of goal-setting within training for enhancing performance has been touted in the literature. Goal-setting theory suggests that setting a moderately difficult, specific goal results in a modest goal-performance discrepancy between the trainee's goal and actual performance level. Such a discrepancy has been found to enhance subsequent performance, as the trainee will employ greater effort and task engagement to resolve the discrepancy. However, research has also shown that the motivating effect of a discrepancy will reverse with repeated feedback indicating that one's performance has fallen short of the desired goal. To date, no prior research has examined the effect …

A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Experiences While Families Receive Services From A Homeless Agency, Sonya Lorelle Oct 2010

A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Experiences While Families Receive Services From A Homeless Agency, Sonya Lorelle

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

Children who experience homelessness have an increased risk for negative outcomes in several developmental areas (Bucker, 2008). While there are numerous programs that hope to mediate these and other risks by offering services to families experiencing homelessness, there is a paucity of research that addresses how children's psychosocial needs are being addressed in existing programs (Gewirtz, Hart-Shegos, & Medhanie, 2008). In addition, there is also a lack of research which represents the children's and parents' perspectives and experiences in supportive housing programs, such as transitional and permanent supportive housing, or in-home case management programs. With this phenomenological qualitative study, I …

Learning Reconsidered: Supporting The Preparatory Year Student Experience, Rania M Rafik Khalil Oct 2010

Learning Reconsidered: Supporting The Preparatory Year Student Experience, Rania M Rafik Khalil

English Language and Literature

Preparatory Year students are challenged by many aspects of their academic life as they make the transition from school to university. As a result, there has been growing emphasis on accountability for the quality of student life, teaching and learning. It has been observed that when faculty supported students’ efforts to meet high expectations, students rose to the challenge. The role of faculty staff is not simply to disseminate information but rather to create conditions that assist students to construct their own knowledge. Excellence in teaching and learning can only occur when both faculty and students are both actively engaged.

Model Citizen: Exploring The Portrayal Of Unconventional Models On Television Shows In Relation To Women's Self Image, Nicole Jenelle James

All Capstone Projects

According to the renowned Mayo Clinic, having a low self-image can lead people to suffer harmful: physical, emotional, and behavioral consequences. Much of women’s selfimage is reliant on comparing themselves to the media’s perception of beauty. In an effort to bolster American women’s self-esteem, a workshop is proposed to explore the relation between portrayal of unconventional models on television shows and women’s/viewer’s self-image.

A Comparative Study Of Learning Styles Of Business Students In The United States And The Dominican Republic, Bijayananda Naik, Deb Tech, Miguelina Franco

Research & Publications

The Index of Learning Styles (ILS) instrument based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model was used to compare distribution of learning styles of business students in the United States and the Dominican Republic. Results show that majority of business students have a balanced learning style in each of the four learning styles dimensions examined. Difference in learning style preference between United States and Dominican Republic was statistically significant only for the sensing-intuitive and active-reflective dimensions of the FelderSilverman model. The knowledge of statistically significant difference in learning styles of the U.S. and non-U.S. students may help American faculty pay attention …

Correcting Mandatory Injustice: Judicial Recommendation Of Executive Clemency, Joanna M. Huang Oct 2010

Correcting Mandatory Injustice: Judicial Recommendation Of Executive Clemency, Joanna M. Huang

Duke Law Journal

In 1987, the United States political and social systems lost trust in the judiciary and severely limited its authority by enacting the mandatory Federal Sentencing Guidelines. During this period, many judges were forced to impose sentences they viewed as unjust. Trust in the judiciary was restored in 2005, when United States v. Booker made the Sentencing Guidelines advisory. Despite the increase in judicial discretion, however, judges are still unable to correct sentences imposed during the intervening eighteen years because Booker does not apply retroactively. Unfortunately, the executive and legislative branches are similarly unable to provide adequate remedies. Congressional action is …

Immature Citizens And The State, Vivian E. Hamilton Oct 2010

Immature Citizens And The State, Vivian E. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

Citizens are born, but they are also made. How its citizens come to be—whether the educations they receive will expand or constrain their future options, whether the values they assimilate will encourage or dissuade their civic engagement, etc.—fundamentally concerns the state. Through the power it wields over a vast range of policymaking contexts, the state can significantly influence (or designate those who will influence) many of the formative experiences of young citizens. Young citizens’ accumulated experiences in turn can significantly influence the future mature citizens they will become. The state insufficiently considers the cumulative nature of its citizens’ development, however. …

Mothers In Trouble: Coping With Actual Or Pending Separation From Children Due To Incarceration, Katarzyna Celinska, Jane A. Siegel Oct 2010

Mothers In Trouble: Coping With Actual Or Pending Separation From Children Due To Incarceration, Katarzyna Celinska, Jane A. Siegel

Publications and Research

Although female offenders are the fastest growing population in prison today, relatively few studies focus on their unique experiences as mothers. In this study, the authors utilize 74 semistructured interviews with mothers before trial and during incarceration to document coping strategies employed to deal with potential or actual separation from their children. From the study data, seven strategies emerge: being a good mother, mothering from prison, role redefinition, disassociation from prisoner identity, self-transformation, planning and preparation, and self-blame. The findings show that mothers used multiple strategies and tended to employ emotion-focused and adaptive coping techniques. The policy implications are discussed.
