A Meta-Analysis Of School-Based Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs, Ling Shen Hung

Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence rate of childhood obesity has increased rapidly worldwide. The childhood obesity epidemic is associated with many adverse health consequences in children as well as a financial burden for a nation’s economy. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of school-based childhood obesity prevention programs in preventing childhood obesity. The objectives of this study were to 1) identify the most effective childhood obesity prevention programs through effect size comparison, and 2) identify important program components that affect the effectiveness of the intervention through subgroup analysis. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) program was used for all statistical analyses. Results of …

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson Dec 2010

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research on neighborhood-level effects on intimate partner violence (IPV) has expanded significantly in the past two decades. However, to date, studies have been unable to disentangle compositional and contextual effects on IPV and have rarely considered the social mechanisms that might link neighborhood conditions to IPV. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study considers individual and contextual influences on violence between partners, and examines the effects of disadvantage and collective efficacy on this type of behavior. Results indicate that neighborhood disadvantage significantly increases and collective efficacy significantly decreases IPV after controlling for individual-level correlates. …

Effect Of Gender On Mississippi Hunter Motivations And Substitutability Of Hunting, Vanessa Carina Oquendo Dec 2010

Effect Of Gender On Mississippi Hunter Motivations And Substitutability Of Hunting, Vanessa Carina Oquendo

Theses and Dissertations

Selfministered mail questionnaires were sent to a stratified sample of 1,000 male and 1,000 female Mississippi resident licensed hunters to determine effect of gender on hunting motivations and substitutability of hunting. Exploratory factor analysis and analysis of covariance were used to analyze hunting motivations. Logistic regression was used to determine effects of 14 independent variables on probability of resident hunters reporting a substitute activity. Males and females differed on achievement-oriented “social recognition” and “seeking stimulation” motivations and on affiliative-oriented “family togetherness” motivations. Gender had no significant effect on resident hunter probability of reporting substitute activities. Age and importance of hunting …

Software Maintainability Measurement: A Task Complexity Perspective, Lulu He Dec 2010

Software Maintainability Measurement: A Task Complexity Perspective, Lulu He

Theses and Dissertations

Software maintainability is one of the most crucial quality attributes of a software product. Software engineering researchers and practitioners have devoted considerable effort to developing “good design” methods, rules and principles to improve software maintainability. But before we can validate the effectiveness of these methods, we first need an approach to measure software maintainability. The existing maintainability measures usually have limited scope and accuracy since they either isolate the software from its environment and focus only on the technical properties of the software, or measure a confounding effect of various factors involved in the maintenance process. Furthermore, these measures are …

Organizational, Job, And Supervisory Antecedents And Consequence Of Job Embeddedness: The Case Of Vietnam, Vinh Q. Nguyen Dec 2010

Organizational, Job, And Supervisory Antecedents And Consequence Of Job Embeddedness: The Case Of Vietnam, Vinh Q. Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

A recent major development in the turnover literature is the introduction of the Job Embeddedness (JE) construct. JE is a multidimensional construct conceptualized as the combined forces that tend to keep an employee from leaving his or her job. Research has demonstrated that JE predicts voluntary turnover above and beyond the variables used in traditional turnover models. However, since it is a relatively new construct, JE has received very limited study, especially across cultures. Further research is needed in order to understand both antecedents and consequences of JE. This dissertation, therefore, investigates a range of presumed organizational, job, and supervisory …

Evaluating Interactions Of Task Relevance And Visual Attention In Driver Multitasking, Teena Marie Garrison Dec 2010

Evaluating Interactions Of Task Relevance And Visual Attention In Driver Multitasking, Teena Marie Garrison

Theses and Dissertations

Use of cellular phones while driving, and safety implications thereof, has captured public and scientific interest. Previous research has shown that driver reactions and attention are impacted by cellular phone use. Generally, previous research studies have not focused on how visual attention and driver performance may interact. Strayer and colleagues found lower recognition for items present in the driving environment when drivers were using a cellular phone than when not using the phone; however, the tested items were not directly relevant to driving. Relevance to driving may have an impact on attention allocation. The current project used a mediumidelity driving …

Helping Prepare Community College Students To Make The Transition From College To Work, Lagena Arlette Bradley Dec 2010

Helping Prepare Community College Students To Make The Transition From College To Work, Lagena Arlette Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ perceptions about the need for more student training on making the transition from community college enrollment to employment. The hypothesis was that community college students would perceive that additional career counseling services would help them transition successfully into the world of work. Examination of students’ thoughts about career counseling services assisted in finding factors that facilitate and impede students’ desires for career counseling services including career courses. A researcher-developed pen and paper self-report survey instrument was administered to students enrolled in English courses at Meridian Community College during the 2009 fall …

Demystifying Conventional Assumptions: Do African American Parents Anticipate Investing Less Toward Their Children’S College Costs Than Their White Peers?, Abebayehu Aemero Tekleselassie

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Some researchers and theorists tend to portray African American parents as lacking the cultural know-how to provide a supportive home environment that enhances college access and success for their children. Since contribution toward college costs is one tangible means by which researchers gauge parents’ commitment toward their children’s education, this study draws data from the National Longitudinal Study (NELS: 1988/2000) and examines how the amount and source of funding parents anticipate toward college costs differs between African Americans and Whites. Results indicate that while racial differences in anticipated college funding appear to favor Whites, who aggregately expect to contribute more …

Technology: How To Stay Out Of Court, Erin Jozwiak, Heather Thomas, Jackie Pillow, George Taylor Ii

Parameters of Law in Student Affairs and Higher Education (CNS 670)

It is hard to believe that over a century ago business professionals, educators, high school and college students were writing letters with a pen and ink, making telephone calls on a land line phone, and physically making home visits to family and friends. In today’s society, texting has replaced phone calls, picture and video messaging has replaced face to face conversation, emails has replaced letter writing and social networking is changing the face of how electronic communication is viewed along and administered.

Electronic communication has led the way in this new millennium of communication and because technology is changing so …
