Technology, Teachers, And Training: Combining Theory With Macedonia’S Experience, Laura Hosman, Maja Cvetanoska Dec 2010

Technology, Teachers, And Training: Combining Theory With Macedonia’S Experience, Laura Hosman, Maja Cvetanoska

Political Science

Numerous developing countries are currently executing or planning—pouring both hope and money into—projects that introduce technology into their educational systems. This paper puts forth the assertion that developing world ICT-in-education projects will continue to disappoint until they are reconceptualized and redesigned to incorporate three transformative concepts: teachers play the key role in determining the success or failure of such projects; change is a years-long process and not a one-time event; and teachers need ongoing support to adopt the technology and should be treated as stakeholders in the innovation-adoption process. In the Macedonian nationwide computers-in-schools project herein described, teachers received extremely …

Patterns Of Social Activity Engagement Among Older Hispanics And Their Relationship To Sociodemographic And Health Variables, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán, Luis M. Falcón

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of social activity engagement in a sample of older Hispanics (Puerto Rican, Dominican, and other Hispanic) and determine whether these patterns differed significantly from the comparison non-Hispanic White group. This article also analyzes how ethnicity, sociodemographic, and health variables (health problems and depression) relate to each of the activity engagement patterns. The factor analysis of social activities from the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire yielded three factors, which describe engagement in social activities as: children and relatives active, friends and activities active, and senior services active. The results from the regression analyses …

The Efficacy Of A Supplementary Literacy Program For Kindergarten Children With Language Impairment, Amy E. Mckinney

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a supplemental literacy program for children with language impairment. Ten kindergarten children that qualified for language therapy at a kindergarten center were divided into treatment and non-treatment groups. Children in the treatment group participated in 10 minutes of supplemental literacy instruction at the end of each language intervention session. The non-treatment group received language therapy without the supplemental literacy intervention. Mid-term scores indicated a significant between group difference in letter-sound correspondence, but not in word decoding and sight word recognition for children in the treatment condition. Twelve week post …

The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger Dec 2010

The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger

WCBT Faculty Publications

This research is focused on the differential impacts of narrative and facts and figures on the understanding of corporate strategy or competitive advantage. In this way a theoretical (philosophical) foundation can be laid for narrative and the understanding of corporate strategy. Additionally, much needed theoretically sound, empirical validation can be offered for the use of narrative and storytelling by leaders within organizations as a means of creating, disseminating, and executing strategy. Employing a model derived from the tension between modern and post-modern thinking about the nature of ideas and concepts a conceptual framework is offered to try to explain the possible …

Gender Differences In Resilience In The Emerging Adulthood Population, Erin Bezek

Theses

Risk factors and protective factors influence an individual's resilience. For this study archival data collected from Rochester Institute of Technology college students were used. Specifically the participants' responses on the 16PF- Adolescent Personality Questionnaire (APQ) Life Difficulties Scale (LDS) were analyzed. After reconfiguring the Life Difficulties Scale using the literature review to analyze the items, results indicated that specific items can be considered risk factors, whereas others can be considered protective factors. Results from this emerging adulthood population did not indicate gender differences in the risk and protective factors.

Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg Dec 2010

Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg

Dissertations

HIV-related stigma is a serious hindrance to addressing the recruitment, maintenance, and follow-up nursing care of HIV-infected persons. This study was anchored within the heuristic research model, which engaged both the researcher and participants in a dialogical and aesthetic manner to unveil the stigma of HIV. The close proximity of the researcher and study participants revealed the most visceral, emotional, and self-reflective nature of gathering data, while maintaining the integrity and rigor of a qualitative study. The purpose of this heuristic study was to examine the lived experiences of HIV-infected individuals relating to internalized stigma within an existential context. This …

The Cultivation And Practice Of Spiritual Care Expertise In An Inpatient Palliative Care Setting, Gail Elaine Pittroff Dec 2010

The Cultivation And Practice Of Spiritual Care Expertise In An Inpatient Palliative Care Setting, Gail Elaine Pittroff

Dissertations

Caregivers involved in palliative care seek to understand problems and challenges at end of life through research to determine the best care for patients and their families. Spiritual care is a key component of quality end of life care, yet there is a paucity of research on spiritual care in inpatient settings at end of life in nursing literature. The purpose of this study was to examine the personhood and spiritual care practices of inpatient palliative nurse consultants. This study describes expert nurse’s experience of delivering spiritual care for patients and families at end of life in inpatient palliative care …

Hopelessly Disadvantaged Like You: A Comparative Study Of Disadvantaged Youth In Mobile And Medellin, Colleen Elizabeth Wynn Dec 2010

Hopelessly Disadvantaged Like You: A Comparative Study Of Disadvantaged Youth In Mobile And Medellin, Colleen Elizabeth Wynn

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Much research has examined hopelessness among impoverished urban neighborhoods in the U.S. This research has addressed many dimensions of hopelessness, including variation by race, associations with violence, as well as the origins of hopelessness. However, little research has focused on comparing the variation of these effects by country (i.e., comparisons of the urban disadvantaged experience in the U.S. with the urban disadvantaged in developing countries). Using two unique data sources, the Mobile Youth Survey (MYS) and a similar survey of disadvantaged adolescents in Medellin, Colombia, this study aims to comparatively examine the process of hopelessness among the “truly disadvantaged” at …

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn Dec 2010

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn

Journal of Student Financial Aid

National statistics indicate that approximately 50 percent of all graduate students fail to complete their degree; thus, understanding the factors that influence their persistence is an important research objective. Using data from a nationally representative sample of bachelor's degree recipients, the study aimed to answer three questions: What proportion of 1992-1993 bachelor's degree recipients enrolled in graduate school by 2003? Of those, what proportion persisted in graduate school? Controlling for background and academic differences, what effect do financial factors have on persistence in graduate school? Descriptive and hierarchal binomial logistic regression results suest that 36 percent of bachelor's degree recipients …

The Influence Of Teachers' Creativity, Attitude And Commitment On Students' Proficiency Of The English Language., Hemaloshinee Vasudevan

Student Works (2010-2019)

The intensity of teachers’ creativity, attitude and commitment is considered to be as a key factor in the success of current educational reform agenda as it heavily influences the teachers’ willingness to engage in cooperative, reflective and critical practice to develop the students’ proficiency or performance in English language. So, training can help teachers to learn how to be more effective at work by modifying the knowledge, skills or attitudes through learning experience to achieve an effective performance and develop the students’ proficiency in their learning process.
