An Examination Of The Impact Of Social Influences On Followers' Assessments Of Male And Female Leadership Behaviors, Mary L. Brown
An Examination Of The Impact Of Social Influences On Followers' Assessments Of Male And Female Leadership Behaviors, Mary L. Brown
Theses and Graduate Projects
The idea that people generally may want or expect male and female leaders to lead in similar ways, which appears as an underlying assumption in much of the literature on leadership, should be refined to delineate differences between leadership competence and leadership style. The findings in this qualitative survey suggest that male and female followers expect male and female leaders to demonstrate similar levels of competence based on their having similar skill sets, experience, education levels, and technical training and aptitude; however, people generally believe that male and female leaders exhibit different leadership styles based upon a number of personal …

Speech-Language Pathologists' Application Of Learning Styles During Clinical Intervention, Crystal Mcdaniel
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the preferred modes of learning and teaching of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The purpose of the study was to determine if SLPs' learning style influences their delivery of therapeutic intervention. Using the Visual, Aural, Read-Write, and Kinesthetic (VARK) questionnaire and observation of SLPs during clinical intervention, the preferred mode(s) of learning and teaching for nine SLPs was determined. Results indicated that study participants did not prefer one particular mode of learning over another, nor were there significant differences in their teaching style. In addition results indicated that SLPs' preferred mode(s) of learning and teaching were independent of one …

Predicting Arithmetic Performance From Age And Executive Function Skills, Andrea Molzhon
Predicting Arithmetic Performance From Age And Executive Function Skills, Andrea Molzhon
Theses and Dissertations
The learning of mathematics can be a difficult process for many students. Understanding the cognitive components that contribute to arithmetic achievement may illuminate sources of difficulty and inform the development of better teaching and learning practices. Executive functions (EFs) have been implicated in the development of arithmetic skills in early childhood, but less is known about this relation across middle childhood and beyond. The current study included individuals ages 6-7, 9-10, 12-13, and 18+ years and examined the contributions of 3 components of EF, working memory (WM), inhibition, and set shifting (SS), to arithmetic skills in two domains. It was …

Parameters of Law in Student Affairs and Higher Education (CNS 670)
In the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, it reads that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This single sentence, the Establishment Clause, is the backbone of religious freedom in the United States, and with its several annotations it has given shape and breadth to the concept of religion in America, more specifically our topic, i.e. …

The Mother's Perspective: Understanding More About The Health Care Needs Of The Preschool Child With Autism, Margaret W. Bultas
Dissertations
Background Information: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has dramatically risen over the last decades. It is known that children with ASD visit health care providers (HCP) more frequently than typically developing peers. Given behavioral and medical complexities of these children, mothers may experience barriers in this process. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of mothers’ experiences of taking their children to the HCP. Aims of this study were to reveal mothers’ concerns related to these experiences, examine resources and barriers affecting the quality of the visit, and discover more about the effect …

The current study was designed to determine the most effective and/or preferable methods in which middle level pre-service teachers learn classroom management skills. Literature review points to no method being anymore effective and/or preferable. This is due to the many different methods of teaching classroom management skills. In this study 42 middle level pre-service teachers were surveyed. These pre-service teachers …

Awareness Cultivation: Designing A Transcultural Patient Family Advisory Council, Lisa G. Peterson
Awareness Cultivation: Designing A Transcultural Patient Family Advisory Council, Lisa G. Peterson
Theses and Graduate Projects
This project explores the rationale that supports designing and implementing a transcultural patient family advisory council (PFAC) at a large academic center in the Midwest where eight disease-diagnosis based PFAC's already exist. Potential pitfalls and obstacles that could interfere with such a council being successful will also be reviewed. In addition, Madeline Leininger's theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality is applied to add support to this effort. Specifically, the stranger to trusted friend enabler explains how having such a committee can foster mutually beneficial relationships that demonstrate a change in culture and attitudes at this traditional physician-lead institution.
Rounding Of The Administrative Supervisor And The Engagement Of Charge Nurses In An Acute Hospital Setting, Kellie J. Geiger
Rounding Of The Administrative Supervisor And The Engagement Of Charge Nurses In An Acute Hospital Setting, Kellie J. Geiger
Theses and Graduate Projects
Hospitals that generate positive employee engagement can retain employees and produce positive effects on the hospital budget, employee morale, and high quality patient care. The purpose of this research will be to study the relationship of Administrative Supervisor rounding and the employee engagement of unit charge nurses. Understanding the significance regarding hospital leadership presence during off shifts, weekends and holidays can have an impact on employee satisfaction, retention, ill calls, and hospital morale and produce better patient care. The hypothesis for this research focuses on the physical presence of the Administrative Supervisor which leads to greater perceived leadership support and …
Using Led Lights As Prompts To Teach Receptive Identification To Preschool Children With Autism, Allison Pavlicek
Using Led Lights As Prompts To Teach Receptive Identification To Preschool Children With Autism, Allison Pavlicek
Honors Theses
The purpose of the study "Using LED Lights as Prompts to Teach Receptive Identification to Preschool Children with Autism" is to implement a different prompting procedure than traditional least-to-most prompting procedures in teaching. One prompting procedure commonly used in discrete trial training classrooms involves least-to-most prompting in the form of gestural and physical prompts to guide children to make correct responses during teaching procedures. To specifically teach receptive identification skills, an apparatus with LED lights was used as a prompting device to vary light intensities on stimuli that the child will choose from. This alternate method of prompting may enable …

Maternal Depressive Symptoms And Health Outcomes In Youths With Type 1 Diabetes: A Mediational Model, Struemph Kari Morgan
Maternal Depressive Symptoms And Health Outcomes In Youths With Type 1 Diabetes: A Mediational Model, Struemph Kari Morgan
Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: The rate and impact of depressive symptoms were examined with two models based on known effects of depression on variables related to diabetes management, parental involvement and diabetes conflict. The proposed models will measure potential effects high maternal depressive symptoms may have on parental monitoring and involvement and diabetes specific conflict and how these variables may in turn relate to poor regimen adherence. Methods: Participants included 225 mothers and young adolescents (aged 11-14) with T1D. Diabetes self-care behaviors were measured with the 24 Hour Recall Interview, parental involvement and monitoring were measured with the Parent Management of Diabetes Scale, …
