Systematic Analysis Of Nutritional Components, Cell Wall Chemical Features And Potential Pathway(S) Of Assimilate Transport In The Developing Pods And Seeds Of Medicago Truncatula, Alka Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Medicago truncatula is a model species for legume studies. Despite the great advances in the study of M. truncatula and development of a vast array of genetic tools and genomic resources, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the nutrient movement and accumulation in its pods and seeds. This study used a combination of the microscopic analysis, histochemical localization and the fluorescent tracers to identify the cellular course and location of nutrient movement. Temporal histochemical localization revealed that the longer duration of the accumulation of protein bodies and lipid droplets combined with the high hexoses concentration in seed apoplasm might …

Effect Of College Health Course Enrollment On Interest, Knowledge And Behavior, Britney Finley
Effect Of College Health Course Enrollment On Interest, Knowledge And Behavior, Britney Finley
Theses and Dissertations
Health of college students is a national public health concern, however general health courses which cover topics of concern such as responsible sexual behaviors, alcoholism, drug abuse, tobacco use, nutrition, weight management, cardiovascular health, and mental health issues are rarely a required course for college students. University health education faculty, health educators who teach students the appropriate practices of health education, must do what they are trained to do: teach college students healthy lifestyle behaviors and effective ways of changing negative behaviors. This quasi-experimental study investigates the extent to which the undergraduate general health courses are impacting the perceived knowledge, …
Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson
Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
The creation, maintenance, and management of Information Product (IP) systems that are used by organizations for complex decisions represent a unique set of challenges. These challenges are compounded when the purpose of such a systems is also for knowledge creation and dissemination. Information quality research to date has focused mainly upon treating IP independent from the actual users, despite the obvious interdependency between the two. Research in cognitive psychology has established a dual-process model for human cognition. Designing IP systems in recognition of these differing methods of human cognition represents a new approach to improving their quality. Education data and …

Glenna Snow's Cook Book: Home Tested Recipes By Beacon Journal Readers, Glenna Snow, Kevin F. Kern
Glenna Snow's Cook Book: Home Tested Recipes By Beacon Journal Readers, Glenna Snow, Kevin F. Kern
University of Akron Press Publications
Glenna Snow was the home economics editor for the Akron Beacon Journal in the 1930s and 1940s. Snow and the newspaper produced a book of readers' recipes in 1938. Six years later, adding more recipes and a substitution section due to government rationing during WWII, the 1944 edition was published. Introduced by historian, Kevin Kern, this reprint edition contains1385 "recipes in a readable form so that each ingredient, with its amount falls into the proper place at the proper time, to give the best results." The recipes are diverse and unique including instructions for "War Cake" and "Martha Washington Omelet." …

Beneath The Salt Marsh Canopy: Loss Of Soil Strength With Increasing Nutrient Loads, R. Eugene Turner
Beneath The Salt Marsh Canopy: Loss Of Soil Strength With Increasing Nutrient Loads, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Although the broadly observed increase in nutrient loading rates to coastal waters in the last 100 years may increase aboveground biomass, it also tends to increase soil metabolism and lower root and rhizome biomass—responses that can compromise soil strength. Fourteen different multiyear field combinations of nutrient amendments to salt marshes were made to determine the relationship between soil strength and various nitrogen, phosphorus, and nitrogen+phosphorus loadings. There was a proportional decline in soil strength that reached 35% in the 60- to 100-cm soil layer at the highest loadings and did not level off. These loading rates are equivalent to those …

Appropriate Erosion Control Techniques For The Rural Hillsides Of Honduras, Meaghan O'Rourke
Appropriate Erosion Control Techniques For The Rural Hillsides Of Honduras, Meaghan O'Rourke
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The rural hillside farmers of Honduras live extremely rudimentary lifestyles with little to no outside income. They choose available parcels of land for their cultivation needs and clear the land using slash and burn techniques. The combination of the steep slopes and the lack of erosion control equates to significant soil loss. The agricultural production determines to the quality of life for the hillside families. Typical erosion control measures, such as terraces, are exceedingly labor intensive for the rural hillside farmers. The average family lives on a section of land until the soil is no longer productive (between two and …

The Appalachian Regional Development Act And Economic Change, James P. Ziliak
The Appalachian Regional Development Act And Economic Change, James P. Ziliak
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
The Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 is one of the longest serving place-based regional development programs in the U.S., and is the largest in terms of geographic scope. I use county-level data from the 1960 thru 2000 Decennial Censuses to evaluate the effect of ARDA on poverty rates and real per capita incomes in Appalachia. The intent to treat parameter is identified in a difference-in-difference-in-difference framework by comparing outcomes in Appalachia to her border counties. Additional knowledge of which counties were solely eligible for highway development funds under ARDA from those counties eligible for both highway as well as …
