Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The primary goal of this study was to determine the effects of prolonged space flight (~180 days) on the structure and function of slow and fast fibres in human skeletal muscle. Biopsies were obtained from the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of nine International Space Station crew members ~45 days pre- and on landing day (R+0) postflight. The main findings were that prolonged weightlessness produced substantial loss of fibre mass, force, and power with the hierarchy of the effects being soleus type I > soleus type II > gastrocnemius type I > gastrocnemius type II. Structurally, the quantitatively most important adaptation was fibre atrophy …
Effect Of Habitat Restoration On Native Bee Communities At The Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2008-2010), Karen Wright
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Native bees interact closely with their host plants and therefore, can be good indicators of habitat diversity and health. Due to the physical aspects of tamarisk removal, reintroduction of native vegetation (through seeding or natural recolonization) is a process that can take years to stabilize. The soil has been greatly disturbed and the recruitment of reproductively mature plants and therefore, the creation of a healthy seed bank takes time. Many types of adult insects, such as bees, wasps, flies, and beetles, use nectar as a source of energy. However bees dont just drink nectar, they also use the pollen as …

Background: Chronic disease accounts for nearly three-quarters of US deaths, yet prevalence rates are not consistently reported at the state level and are not available at the sub-state level. This makes it difficult to assess trends in prevalence and impossible to measure sub-state differences. Such county-level differences could inform and direct the delivery of health services to those with the greatest need. Methods: We used a database of prescription drugs filled in the US as a proxy for nationwide, county-level prevalence of three top causes of death: heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. We tested whether prescription data are statistically valid proxy …
The Relationship Between Pretend Play And Cognitive, Linguistic, And Social Skills Development In Early Childhood : A Project Based Upon Secondary Analysis Of Developmental Screening Data From An Elementary School In Plainfield, Connecticut, Lauren Ann Sebastianelli
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
There is substantial research to support the positive correlation between pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development in early childhood. Most of this research has explored bivariate relationships. We know little about how these variables might co-vary in the same sample. This exploratory study was based on secondary analysis of developmental screening data for a preschool program in Connecticut. The sample was comprised of 79 three and four year-olds. Proxies for pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development were operationalized from a standardized instrument, Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL) and a Social Skills …

The Role Of Neglect And Disordered Attachment In The Childhood Of Adolescent Male Sex Offenders : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Melissa Ann. Tell
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Sexual abuse by adolescent males continues to be a serious problem that receives little recognition and attention in research. While a majority of sexual offenses are committed by adults, roughly 20% are committed by adolescents (Barbaree, 2006). Over 45% of adolescent males in residential treatment begin sexually deviant behaviors before the age of 12 (Burton, 2000). Similarly, while maltreatment and attachment is mentioned in research on adolescent sexual offenders, few researchers have studied the role of emotional and physical neglect on the lives of adolescent sexual offenders. In this sample physical abuse and poverty were both significant predicting the number …
The Relevance Of The Natural Environment To Social Work : A Comparison Of Fields That Consider The Natural Environment In Social Problems : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, John D. Ritchie
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Given the natural environment's importance to humans, this study was undertaken to understand how social work has considered the natural environment in approaching social problems compared to other fields that consider the natural environment. In addition, comparing literature from several fields, the author sought to evaluate the adequacy of social work's attention to the natural environment as the field analyzes and conceives solutions to social problems and carries out its mission. The study examined the gaps in social work literature regarding the natural environment. The author compared published literature from social work, psychology, environmental health and medicine, and environmentalism to …
Winnicottian Object Relations And Behavioral Theory Conceptualizations Of Difficult-To-Treat Binge-Type Eating Disorders : Proposal For A Synthesized Treatment Approach Through Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Christy Erin O'Brien
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Psychopathy and sociopathy are two personality disorders that are similar in action though different in origin. Whereas the psychopathic individual is a product of nature in that the origin of the social disorder originates in the mind, the sociopathic individual is a product of upbringing as sociopathy is more so a result of a learned/defensive behavior. Although the number is uncertain, there could be as many as ten million psychopathic and sociopathic people living in the United States today. This paper focuses on the etiology of both psychopathy and sociopathy. It also looks at how psychopathy and sociopathy are recognized …
Clinicians' Understanding And Perception Of Coping Behaviors And Cultural Differences In Families Dealing With A Childhood Cancer Diagnosis : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Kara J. Rule
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This research provides insight into social workers' understanding and perceptions of coping behaviors in families faced with a pediatric cancer diagnosis. The three research questions that guided this study were: (1) Do clinicians observe/perceive cultural distinctions in coping behaviors among families dealing with a pediatric cancer diagnosis? (2) How does a clinician's own culture impact his or her assessments of a family's coping abilities? and (3) How can clinicians gain better cultural sensitivity and cultural competence in working with diverse populations? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 social workers who were working in pediatric oncology centers across the United States. …

Plants with higher glutamine synthetase (GS) activity in photosynthetic tissues than below-ground structures (high leaf:root [L:R] GS activity) show growth advantages over plants with a low L:R GS activity ratio. The benefits of a high L:R GS activity ratio are well documented in agricultural systems, but little is known about the ecology of GS partitioning in natural systems. To determine the ecological significance of GS partitioning, we measured above- and below-ground GS activity in Spartina grasses field-collected from a Maine salt marsh and others raised in a growth chamber from seed. The more stress-tolerant, faster growing S. alterniflora had a …

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi
The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi
Theses and Dissertations
Individual differences in temperament can be a risk or a protective factor for a child, especially for children at-risk who possess single or multiple risk factors that may interfere with their educational success and affect their healthy development and their life-long outcomes. This research study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relationships between temperament, school adjustment, and academic achievement in children at-risk. Seventy-seven children, ages five to 11 years, were reassessed two years after an initial study. Their teachers completed the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children (TABC), the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), and reported on the children's academic achievement. …

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap
Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap
Psychology ETDs
Research on offspring sex ratios and parental condition indicate that parents in better condition may benefit from biasing their offspring toward sons. While measures of phenotypic quality and offspring sex ratio have been examined in other animals, the current study was designed to look at this relationship within human families. I investigated the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and facial masculinity, both possible measures of phenotype, and offspring sex ratio within families. The results were mixed. The fluctuating asymmetry of one sibling covaried negatively with the overall offspring sex ratio within their family. The significant negative correlation between the two provides …

Let's Do It : Individual Perspectives On First Sexual Experiences : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sara Ann Christiano
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Although sex surrounds us in many ways learning about it in an honest, open and factual way seems more uncommon than common. This study was designed to examine how individuals gathered information about sex prior to their first sexual experience, how they made decisions to have sex for the first time and what sort of impact their decisions have had on their perspectives on sex. It was hypothesized that individuals who had access to and utilized a broad range of factual information including speaking to trusted, experienced individuals, such as parents and adults with whom they were close, were more …
Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim
Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim
Sociology ETDs
My dissertation addresses the developmental paradox' of rapid gains in human development in Bangladesh against the backdrop of a social scientific literature that portrays two of the country's endemic features—Islam and illiberal politics—as inveterate obstacles to their achievement. I use data from household surveys conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with the World Bank in 1991-2 and 1998-9, and identify the distal determinants of the Bangladeshi mortality decline. I find female education has a linear effect and household income has a curvilinear effect on infant and child mortality. Why is the relationship between income and child …

Validity Of Self-Report With Respect To Prescription Medications Among Pregnant Women, Pallavi Jaiswal
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Objectives: Accuracy of self-report regarding prescription medication use among pregnant women is largely unknown. Accurate self-reported information is needed for medication reconciliation purposes, clinical management, clinical teratology research, and monitoring of adherence. This study examined the accuracy of self-reported medication use by pregnant women for medications used chronically and episodically or intermittently during pregnancy. Further, predictors of inaccurate reporting regarding prescription medication use were also estimated. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of data collected through the University of New Mexico (UNM) cohort study, Safety of Medication and Perception of Teratogenicity' (SMART) was conducted. Pregnant women were recruited from UNM prenatal care …

Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Thermotolerance (cellular adaptations that allow survival after an acute, severe heat exposure) and heat acclimation (systemic adaptations that improve heat dissipation following chronic heat exposure) have traditionally been considered separate phenomena. However, recent studies in animals suggest these adaptations may be related through the heat shock response. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of a standard laboratory heat shock response-inhibitor (QUERCETIN) on established markers of thermotolerance [gastrointestinal barrier permeability, plasma TNF-a, Il-6, and Il-10 concentrations; leukocyte HSP70 content(HSP70)] and heat acclimation [reduced body temperatures, heart rate, and physiologic strain in response to exercise/heat stress] in male subjects (n=8) completing a 7-day …
