Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston
Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston
Research Papers
Understanding the composition of paleodiets is crucially important for the archaeological investigation of lifeways and subsistence practices within ancient societies. Among the numerous research methods capable of investigating various elements of paleodiets, the use of stable isotope analysis has become increasingly popular. Advantages of this research technique include its ability to recognize multiple types of dietary inputs through the examination of stable carbon and stable nitrogen isotopes, and to investigate dietary composition and variation at an individual level. This research paper examines how this methodology has developed through time. Specific attention will be directed toward both the procedural advances that …
Schizophrenia Across Cultures: Significant Interactions Of Biology And Environment, Kimberly L. Wilbanks
Schizophrenia Across Cultures: Significant Interactions Of Biology And Environment, Kimberly L. Wilbanks
Research Papers
Is schizophrenia caused and ultimately guided by biology or do environmental factors such as culture and interaction style impact the course and even the onset of this disease? In this paper, the biological mechanisms of schizophrenia and the environmental influences on its behavioral and biological symptomology will be explored. Evidence will be provided that supports both the biological etiology of this mental illness as well as the strong influence of environmental factors, such as culture, on the severity, onset, and relapse rate of schizophrenia. It will be shown that even the structure and function of the schizophrenic brain is influenced …

Have You Used Clickers In Programming?, Carolyn Bird, Jacquelyn Mcclelland
Journal of Extension
Extension agents must provide pertinent programming to their audiences as well as show the impact of their programs. While understanding the audience is a basic tenet of effective public speaking, Extension audiences are not always homogeneous, and typically Extension Agents provide education to participants with different educational levels and life experiences. This article illustrates that Extension educators and their participants can benefit greatly through strategic use of clickers and extends the discussion to the advantages of use for heterogeneous audiences and in applied research. Techniques for using clickers to collect program impact data are discussed.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Goiter Belt: A Critique Of Health Care And Universal Salt Iodization In The Tsum Valley, Julian Goetz, Vanessa Soetanto
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Tsum Valley, opened to visitors in 2008, has only recently begun the process of modernization. The health of the population is still not stable with regards to nutrition, and the health care system is still inadequate due to geographic conditions of remoteness and difficulty of access. The health condition is further exacerbated by political interactions affecting iodine consumption. This paper presents original information collected via interviewing processes throughout the valley and in Kathmandu over the course of a four-week period. The results include the inadequacy of health care facilities in treating endemic health issues and of the failure of …

Kenya’S Post-Election Violence: Using A Kisii-Luo Case Study For A Critique Of Common Thought, Josh Gwin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
A first step in a series of studies intended to discover how members of Kenyan ethnic groups elect National, Political and Ethnic identities, and how that election affected the 2007-2008 Post Election Violence, this field study examines as case study the relationship between the Kisii and Luo ethnic groups, setting up a comparison between the Kisii-Kipsigis ethnic relationship. Finding that the questions asked by actors such as the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights were fundamentally wrong and incomplete, this study identifies questions of more significance to crisis-prevention and begins to identify methods to improve local civic-engagement within a community …
Conflicting Or Complimentary? The Varying Approaches To Humanitarian Action, Andre Patzke
Conflicting Or Complimentary? The Varying Approaches To Humanitarian Action, Andre Patzke
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In the international humanitarian aid community (IHAC), a group of national, political, public, and private actors, there are many dichotomies. These differences range from the organizations’ structures to their humanitarian philosophies. One philosophical schism amongst the IHAC actors is the seemingly contradictory approaches of the UN’s cluster system and that of the Dunantist organizations. In general, this schism can be characterized as a contrast in humanitarian ideologies; the integrated approach, which includes political development, on the one hand, and strict humanitarian aid that stays removed from issues of development on the other.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
A study was carried out to investigate future sustainability of organic vegetable production in the UK based on perception of the vegetable growers. The objectives were to determine the economic and social sustainability of organic vegetables production and to examine whether there are any relationships between economic and social indicators. Data and opinions were collected by interviewing and through a postal questionnaire. Only 14% growers (26 out of 175) had replied by post. About 61% of the respondents had been farming in the conventional way before switching to organic and 39% growers started organic farming straightway. Those who started organic …

Metabolic Profiling And Fingerprinting For The Detection And Discrimination Of Mechanical Damage In Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus) During Storage, Aoife O'Gorman
Doctoral
Horticultural products such as mushrooms are exposed to external agents during their postharvest life, which are going to affect product quality. Loss of whiteness during storage is particularly important in the mushroom industry. Rough handling and distribution of crops, fruiting body senescence, bacterial and viral infection are among the causes of mushroom discolouration. The aim of this work was to study the use of metabolic fingerprinting and metabolic profiling tools for the detection and discrimination of mechanical damage on mushrooms. This research involved: 1. Investigating whether the chemical changes induced by mechanical damage and ageing of mushrooms could be (a) …

Worksite Wellness: Investing In Healthy Employees And Economies, Patricia Case
Journal of Extension
Worksites are structured environments with social norms and policies. These "norms" positively or negatively influence health habits such as physical activity and food choices. This article describes a worksite wellness program conducted and evaluated by Extension. The program demonstrated significant changes in body weight, waist circumference, body mass index, amount of exercise, and stages of change for exercise and intake of fruits and vegetables. This article challenges Extension to partner with employers who have a growing interest in contributing to a healthy work force. Also included are suggestions and tools for conducting worksite wellness programs.

Speaking The Same Language In Paraprofessional Staff Development, Susan S. Baker, Meredith Pearson
Journal of Extension
Literacy is an important consideration in the development of new staff orientation and ongoing training programs for Extension paraprofessional educators. In a project to develop core competencies for nutrition paraprofessionals, investigators learned that some of the competencies, (developed by a panel of Extension professionals) were not expressed using terminology understood by paraprofessionals. Implications for developing effective training programs include using terminology understood by paraprofessionals, engaging in intentional dialog with paraprofessionals to determine common language, and teaching paraprofessionals new terminology when necessary.

Impact Of Seasonality And Food Security On Growth And Morbidity In Children Under 2 Years In Rural Honduras, Jacqueline Wilson
Impact Of Seasonality And Food Security On Growth And Morbidity In Children Under 2 Years In Rural Honduras, Jacqueline Wilson
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Child malnutrition remains a significant problem worldwide with children under two years of age at particular risk. Even mild to moderate child undernutrition in food insecure households has been associated with poor growth, increased rates of infection and poor development. Rural Honduras undergoes a rainy and a dry season each year. Households rely on subsistence agriculture and as the dry season progresses, they have fewer food reserves and limited cash resources. It is anticipated that this will lead not only to decreased measures of food security, but also that children in food secure households will have higher rates of growth …
