Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: Children's active commuting to school, i.e. walking or cycling to school, was associated with greater moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, although studies among ethnic minorities are sparse. Objectives: Among a low-income, ethnic minority sample of fourth grade students from eight public schools, we examined (1) correlates of active commuting to school and (2) the relationship between active commuting to school and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline measurements from a sample of participants (n=149) aged 9-12 years from a walk to school intervention study in Houston, Texas. The primary outcome was the weekly rate of active …

Physical Activity In Latino Children: Research And Its Implications, Norma Olvera Ph.D., Stephanie F. Kellam, Kara Menefee, Jay Lee, Dennis W. Smith
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Childhood obesity affects children across all ages and genders. However, Latino children and adolescents are at an increased risk, with one out of three Latino children (ages 2-19) being classified as overweight. Physical inactivity is deemed a major factor contributing to the energy imbalance that leads to excess adiposity. The aims of this study are twofold: 1) to present relevant research regarding Latino children’s physical patterns, influences on their physical activity, and interventions designed to promote physical activity and fitness in this population; and 2) to discuss implications derived from this research to help health educators, practitioners, and policy makers …

Chronically poor people are those who experience deprivation over many years, often over their entire lives, and who sometimes pass poverty on to their children. In this study poverty is measured as the low level of satisfaction of the ten basic needs and the underutilization of material and non material resources. The ten basic needs considered in this study are; clean and pleasant environment, water, clothing, food, dwellings, health, transport and communication, fuel, education, spiritual and cultural needs. The economic factors which are studied in this research include financial capital (income indebtedness and savings), human capital (educational, skill and health …

Young Child Poverty In 2009: Rural Poverty Rate Jumps To Nearly 29 Percent In Second Year Of Recession, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Michelle L. Stransky
Carsey Publications
The U.S. Census Bureau's release of its American Community Survey data in September 2010 illustrated some expected changes in poverty rates in 2009, the second year of the Great Recession. For young children under age 6, living in poverty is especially difficult, given the long-term effects on health and education. Every region of the country except the West saw increases in rural young child poverty in 2009.

B-Vitamins And Fatty Acids In The Prevention And Treatment Of Alzheimer's Disease And Dementia: A Systematic Review, Peter J. Whitehouse
Faculty Scholarship
The increasing worldwide prevalence of dementia is a major public health concern. Findings from some epidemiological studies suggest that diet and nutrition may be important modifiable risk factors for development of dementia. In order to evaluate the strength of the available evidence of an association of dietary factors with dementia including Alzheimer's disease (AD), we systematically searched relevant publication databases and hand-searched bibliographies up to end July 2007. We included prospective cohort studies which evaluated the association of nutrient levels with the risk of developing dementia and randomized intervention studies examining the treatment effect of nutrient supplementation on cognitive function. …

At the end of World War II, a severe 5-mo famine struck the cities in the western part of The Netherlands. At its peak, the rations dropped to as low as 400 calories per day. In 1972, cognitive performance in 19-y-old male conscripts was reported not to have been affected by exposure to the famine before birth. In the present study, we show that cognitive function in later life does seem affected by prenatal undernutrition. We found that at age 56 to 59, men and women exposed to famine during the early stage of gestation performed worse on a selective …

High Hopes: Public Health Approaches To Reducing The Need For Health Care, Michele J. Orza
High Hopes: Public Health Approaches To Reducing The Need For Health Care, Michele J. Orza
National Health Policy Forum
Driven in part by a desire to contain health care costs, policymakers are looking beyond medical care for opportunities to reduce the need for expensive services. This paper briefly reviews current public health concepts and strategies for improving health that emphasize nonmedical factors such as behavior, socioeconomic status, and environment. It also provides examples of how these concepts and strategies undergird many of the public health provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, other legislation, and several programs and initiatives. These concepts include prevention, health in all policies, global health, the One Health Initiative, and climate change and …

THE FDA BLACK BOX WARNING SYSTEM: THE UTMOST IN DRUG AND PATIENT SAFETY? Andrew Georgi (Sponsored by Paul Barash, MD, and Loreta Grecu, MD). Department of Anesthesiology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Of the 7856 pharmaceutical products under the purview of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over six hundred have a black box warning (BBW). As the FDAs highest level of warning included on drug package inserts, this notation is reserved for those drugs that pose significant risks leading to death or serious injury. However, the types of warnings that warrant this distinction have not been …

Kinesiology and Public Health
A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county’s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpases: Targets Of Oxidative Stress In Brain Aging And Neurodegeneration, Asma Zaidi
Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpases: Targets Of Oxidative Stress In Brain Aging And Neurodegeneration, Asma Zaidi
Faculty and Staff Publications
The plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase (PMCA) pumps play an important role in the maintenance of precise levels of intracellular Ca(2+) [Ca(2+)](i), essential to the functioning of neurons. In this article, we review evidence showing age-related changes of the PMCAs in synaptic plasma membranes (SPMs). PMCA activity and protein levels in SPMs diminish progressively with increasing age. The PMCAs are very sensitive to oxidative stress and undergo functional and structural changes when exposed to oxidants of physiological relevance. The major signatures of oxidative modification in the PMCAs are rapid inactivation, conformational changes, aggregation, internalization from the plasma membrane and proteolytic degradation. PMCA …
