Biparental Mucus Feeding: A Unique Example Of Parental Care In An Amazonian Cichlid., Jonathan Buckley, Richard J. Maunder, Andrew Foey, Janet Pearce, Adalberto L. Val, Katherine A. Sloman

School of Biomedical Sciences

Vertebrates display a wide variety of parental care behaviours, including the guarding of offspring pre and post nutritional independence as well as the direct provision of nutrients during the early development period. The Amazonian cichlid Symphysodon spp. (discus fish) is unusual among fish species, in that both parents provide offspring with mucus secretions to feed from after hatching. This extensive provision of care, which can last up to a month, imposes a physiological demand on both parents and gives rise to conflict between the parent and offspring. Here, we investigated the relationship between parents and offspring during a breeding cycle, …

Imaging Of Small Bowel Obstruction Following Gastric Bypass Surgery For Morbid Obesity : A Retrospective Review, Rashid Al-Sukaiti, Lawrence Stein, Nicholas Mesurolle, Benoit, Giovanni P. Artho

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: This study is a single institution retrospective evaluation of imaging findings of small bowel obstruction (SBO) after retrocolic antegastric Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity. Methods: The radiological database of 490 patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity from January 2001-2005 at the Royal Victoria Hospital McGill University Health Center was searched for SBO complications related to the procedure. There were 22 cases of small bowel obstruction related to the procedure. Ten patients had abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans, 12 patients had upper gastrointestinal (UGI) and small bowel follow through (SBFT). Results: Among 22 …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The Nutritional Advice Protocol, established by the Department of Health to combat diabetes, has been implemented in primary health care throughout Oman since 2003. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of dietary and lifestyle advice and determine the perception and attitudes of Omani adults with type 2 diabetes to diabetes management. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted on 98 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in Al-Buraimi Governorate, Oman. Metabolic parameters, dietary intake and exercise levels were evaluated in 2005 and re-evaluated in 2008. Results: A total of 43% of the patients (male = 16, female = …

New Peptide-Pair Screening Strategy And Peptidylglycine A-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase (Phm) Based Enrichment Method For The Discovery Of Novel A-Amidated Peptides, Zhenming An

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Peptide a-amidation is known as a signature of bioactivity due to the fact that half of the bioactive peptides found in the nervous and endocrine systems are a-amidated and that most known a-amidated peptides are bioactive. a-Amidated peptides are produced by the oxidative cleavage of glycine-extended precursors. Peptidylglycine a-amidating monooxygenase (PAM) is the only known enzyme responsible for catalyzing this reaction and its sole physiological function is to convert glycine extended prohormones to their a-amidated forms. High levels of PAM are found in certain tissues with no corresponding level of amidated products suggesting the presence of undiscovered a-amidated peptide hormones. …

T-Lymphocyte Responses To Intestinally Absorbed Antigens Can Contribute To Adipose Tissue Inflammation And Glucose Intolerance During High Fat Feeding, Yuehui Wang, Jianing Li, Lihua Tang, Yu Wang, Richard Charnigo, Willem De Villiers, Erik Eckhardt Nov 2010

T-Lymphocyte Responses To Intestinally Absorbed Antigens Can Contribute To Adipose Tissue Inflammation And Glucose Intolerance During High Fat Feeding, Yuehui Wang, Jianing Li, Lihua Tang, Yu Wang, Richard Charnigo, Willem De Villiers, Erik Eckhardt

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with inflammation of visceral adipose tissues, which increases the risk for insulin resistance. Animal models suggest that T-lymphocyte infiltration is an important early step, although it is unclear why these cells are attracted. We have recently demonstrated that dietary triglycerides, major components of high fat diets, promote intestinal absorption of a protein antigen (ovalbumin, "OVA"). The antigen was partly transported on chylomicrons, which are prominently cleared in adipose tissues. We hypothesized that intestinally absorbed gut antigens may cause T-lymphocyte associated inflammation in adipose tissue.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Triglyceride absorption promoted intestinal absorption of OVA into adipose tissue, …
