Microalgae Harvesting By Flocculation With Polymer-Coated Magnetite Particles, Humayun Shariff
Microalgae Harvesting By Flocculation With Polymer-Coated Magnetite Particles, Humayun Shariff
Masters Theses
"Although microalgae are considered to be one of the potentially significant feedstock for renewable biofuels, harvesting them efficiently from culture ponds has been a major hurdle. The conventional harvesting methods such as centrifugation and filtration are very time and labor intensive processes. Gravimetrical settlement with the aid of cationic flocculants is the most widely employed technique, but suffers from the difficulty in recovering microalgae floes. Furthermore, recycling of these flocculants after the harvesting process is not possible. Polymer-coated magnetite particles have been investigated for applications in various fields. This research has focused on the development of a novel and efficient …

Aspects Of The Reproduction Of An Invasive Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, In Northern And Southern New England, Emily F. Gamelin
Master's Theses and Capstones
Populations of the invasive shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus , were studied in northern and southern New England to determine if crabs differ in reproductive behavior or characteristics between these regions. Additionally, effects of temperature on reproductive activity were quantified through laboratory experimentation.
Number of broods per season increased with temperature, but the seasonal total was limited to three broods in laboratory experiments. Broods experienced limited success at the lowest temperature, 10°C. The reproductive season was longer at lower latitudes, and females at this site had smaller average ovigerous size. Patterns of ovigery varied between the regions, suggesting the production of …

Elucidating The Microbial Community Within A Trichloroethene Contaminated Competent Bedrock Aquifer Located At Pease International Tradeport, Portsmouth, Nh, Michelle M. Majko
Master's Theses and Capstones
A trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated competent bedrock aquifer exists at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH. Characterization by the Bedrock Bioremediation Center (BBC) at the University of New Hampshire showed active in situ anaerobic degradation of TCE. Formation water from discrete, hydraulically connected fractures was extracted to characterize and enumerate the prevalent TCE biodegradation processes using Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Eubacteria (90%), Archaea (5%), and sulfate reducing bacteria within Desulfobacteriaceae (1--26%) were present at all depths (13--30 meters). Two probes targeting the anaerobic TCE-dechlorinating genus, Dehalococcoides (4--10%) were developed. FISH in combination with Flow Cytometry was employed to automate the analysis; …
The Influence Of Stocking Density And Acoustic Conditioning On The Behavior And Growth Of Atlantic Cod, Gadus Morhua, Daniel Ward
The Influence Of Stocking Density And Acoustic Conditioning On The Behavior And Growth Of Atlantic Cod, Gadus Morhua, Daniel Ward
Master's Theses and Capstones
The goal of experiment one (Chapter One) was to determine if stocking density had an influence of the swimming behavior and spatial distribution of adult cod that were being raised in an aquaculture cage at the University of New Hampshire's Coastal Marine Laboratory. Acoustic telemetry and underwater video were used to quantify the behavior and distribution of cod that were stocked at four densities (5, 10, 25 and 45 kg/m³). At the lowest density (5 kg/m³) cod remained deep in the cage and spent 64.3 +/- 0.8% of their time below 1.80m (of a 2.70m cage). This contrasts to the …

Evaluation Of Post Harvest Conditions Contributing To Attacks By The Red Turpentine Beetle, Dendroctonus Valens Leconte At The Massabesic Experimental Forest In Southern Maine, Garret D. Dubois
Master's Theses and Capstones
Silvicultural management of Pinus strobus L. runs the risk of damaging residual trees and can increase the probability of attack from damaging insects, including the common bark beetle Dendroctonus valens Le Conte. Considered a secondary pest, it is possible that D. valens is capable of economic impacts such as the downgrading of logs and lumber due to defect and blue-stain. To assess post harvest conditions that contribute to the probability and severity of D. valens attacks in Pinus strobus, stand and tree characteristics were sampled in four silvicultural treatments and one control site in southern Maine. Results showed that clearcuts …

Habitat Use, Movements And Spring Migration Chronology And Corridors Of Female Gadwalls That Winter Along The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Jacob M. Gray
LSU Master's Theses
The Louisiana Gulf Coast is an important wintering area for North American gadwall (Anas strepera). Conservation of winter habitat is a top priority of the Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Quantitative estimates of habitat use by wintering gadwall would help improve energetic demand models and subsequent estimates of habitat requirements. I used satellite telemetry (PTTs) to estimate winter habitat and refuge uses, spring migration chronology and corridors, as well as inter- and intra-regional winter movements of females. I used a split-plot MANOVA to evaluate the effects of individual females, female age, winter, hunt periods within winter, time of day, and all …
Perspectives On The Practice Of Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Section In East Africa, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Abraham Mukaindo, William Stones
Perspectives On The Practice Of Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Section In East Africa, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Abraham Mukaindo, William Stones
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: The increasing Caesarean section rates being observed in most facilities will ultimately result in a larger proportion of women with previous scar. Choices need to be made by both the patient and the health worker between attempted vaginal birth after Caesarean section (VBAC) and Elective Repeat Caesarean section (ERCS). Both practices are associated with perinatal risks and benefits that call for certain objectivity and prudence in decision making especially where resources are scarce.
Objective: To determine perceptions on the practice of vaginal birth after Caesarean section among maternity service providers in East Africa.
Design: A semi-qualitative cross sectional survey …

Environmental Correlates Of Abundances Of Mosquito Species And Stages In Discarded Vehicle Tires, Donald A. Yee, Jamie M. Kneitel, Steven A. Juliano
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Discarded vehicle tires are a common habitat for container mosquito larvae, although the environmental factors that may control their presence or abundance within a tire are largely unknown. We sample discarded vehicle tires in six sites located within four counties of central Illinois during the spring and summer of 2006 to determine associations between a suite of environmental factors and community composition of container mosquitoes. Our goal was to find patterns of association between environmental factors and abundances of early and late instars. We hypothesized that environmental factors correlated with early instars would be indicative of oviposition cues, whereas environmental …

This article challenges the traditional methods taken by progressive lawyers and activists. It argues that superficial changes to a marginalizing system simply create “window dressing” that serves to reinforce the status quo. This article is a provocative call to radicalize legal practice, to be critical of all movements, and always question who is being excluded. It highlights that what may appear like making things better may actually be a contribution to the legitimization of the system that one intends to challenge.
Patients' Perspectives On Eating Disorder Treatment: A Resource For Practitioners, Danielle L. Davis
Patients' Perspectives On Eating Disorder Treatment: A Resource For Practitioners, Danielle L. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
The need for improved treatment for patients with eating disorders is indicated from outcome studies and clinicians' reports. In order to understand the patient's motivation to engage actively in treatment, as well as the factors that contribute to successful outcome, it is important to attend to patients' perspectives on treatment. The author critically reviewed studies on patients' views and 10 key treatment elements were identified: the therapeutic relationship, provision of social support, collaborative treatment, focus on emotions, focus on underlying issues, inclusion of psychoeducation, therapist's knowledge of EDs, behavioral interventions, appropriate use of medication, and therapist's competence in family dynamics. …

Cultural Diversity In The Expression And Experience Of Positive Well-Being Among Homeless Men Enrolled In A Residential Treatment Facility, Pernilla Anne Nathan
Cultural Diversity In The Expression And Experience Of Positive Well-Being Among Homeless Men Enrolled In A Residential Treatment Facility, Pernilla Anne Nathan
Theses and Dissertations
What is happiness? What creates or leads to the experience of happiness? Questions like these are fundamental in understanding human functioning in terms of strengths, psychological resiliency, positive emotions, and well-being. However, many question whether current definitions of well-being are shaped by Western Euro-centric perspectives of happiness, negating "other" patterns of well-being (Ryff, Keyes, & Hughes, 2003). Well-being has been considered a critical component in understanding optimal functioning (Ryan & Deci, 2001). However, relatively little qualitative research has been conducted examining how well-being is expressed and experienced in the context of life adversity and racial/ethnic minority status. The purpose of …
Rights, Harms, And Duties: A Response To Justice For Hedgehogs, Robin West
Rights, Harms, And Duties: A Response To Justice For Hedgehogs, Robin West
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The author responds to the three jurisprudential positions that Ronald Dworkin discusses in his book--albeit briefly--so as to integrate them into his hedgehoggian program. The first is that we should think of rights as political trumps, such that the individual liberty protected by the right, and hence the behavior protected by the right, trumps in importance and in effect, both in law and in popular imaginings, the various collective goals with which the right might be in conflict. Second, we should think about our collective life, and the principles that should guide it, through the lens of the rights of …
Effects Of Biochar-Amended Soil On The Water Quality Of Greenroof Runoff, Deborah Aileen Beck
Effects Of Biochar-Amended Soil On The Water Quality Of Greenroof Runoff, Deborah Aileen Beck
Dissertations and Theses
As the numbers of installed greenroofs continue to grow internationally, designing greenroof growing media to reduce the amount of nutrients in the stormwater runoff is becoming essential. Biochar, a carbon-net-negative soil amendment, has been promoted for its ability to retain nutrients in soils and increase soil fertility. This study evaluated the effect on water quality of greenroof runoff after adding biochar to a typical extensive greenroof soil. Prototype greenroof trays with and without 7% biochar (by weight) were planted with sedum or ryegrass, with barren soil trays for controls. The greenroof trays were subjected to two sequential 2.9 in/hr rainfall …
Resource Selection And Abundance Estimation Of Moose: Implications For Caribou Recovery In A Human Altered Landscape, Wibke Peters
Resource Selection And Abundance Estimation Of Moose: Implications For Caribou Recovery In A Human Altered Landscape, Wibke Peters
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are threatened across Canada due to human disturbance altering predator-prey dynamics. The niche specialization of caribou enables them to survive in nutrient-poor habitats spatially separated from other ungulates and their shared predators. The conversion of old-growth forests to young seral stands is hypothesized to increase the abundance of moose (Alces alces), the dominant prey for wolves (Canis lupus), resulting in apparent competition. We first examined habitat selection of moose in 2 regions with differing intensities of human disturbance in west-central Alberta and east-central British Columbia to assess how human disturbance affects the spatial separation of …

The Invisible Man: The Conscious Neglect Of Men And Boys In The War On Human Trafficking, Samuel Vincent Jones
Utah Law Review
On April 4, 2010, CNN’s Larry King Live aired a special segment, titled “Worldwide Crisis: Human Trafficking,” to highlight the crime’s brutal and global nature. Joined by Ashley Judd and Lucy Liu, host Larry King described human trafficking as “women and children, kidnapped, bought, [and] sold into bondage.” Throughout the program, the commentators made at least twenty-five references to “women” or “girls” to describe, in graphic detail, occasions on which men enslaved and sexually abused females. It portrayed the crime as a contemporary tale of good versus evil about misogyny and the sexual exploitation of women.

An Educational Approach To School Food: Using Nutrition Standards To Promote Healthy Dietary Habits, Timothy D. Lytton
Utah Law Review
Reforming school food is a prominent issue on the nation’s food policy agenda. A longstanding concern of reform advocates has been the abundance of foods that are high in sugar, fat, and salt. These items—pizza, burgers, french fries, cakes, snack foods, soda, and candy—are sold in cafeterias, vending machines, and school stores. In addition, students sell these foods to raise funds for extracurricular activities, parents provide them for in-class birthday parties, and teachers give them out as rewards. Critics allege that overconsumption of these foods in school contributes to increasing rates of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes and fosters …
