The Dilemma Of Direct Democracy, Craig M. Burnett, Elizabeth Garrett, Mathew D. Mccubbins Jan 2010

The Dilemma Of Direct Democracy, Craig M. Burnett, Elizabeth Garrett, Mathew D. Mccubbins

Faculty Scholarship

The dilemma of direct democracy is that voters may not always be able to make welfare- improving decisions. Lupia’s seminal work has led us to believe that voters can substitute voting cues for substantive policy knowledge. Lupia, however, emphasized that cues were valuable under certain conditions and not others. In what follows, we present three main findings regarding voters and what they know about California’s Proposition 7. First, much like Lupia reported, we show voters who are able to recall endorsements for or against a ballot measure vote similarly to people who recall certain basic facts about the initiative. We …

Functional Genomic Examinations Of Interactions Between Common Members Of The Human Gut Microbiota, Michael Mahowald Jan 2010

Functional Genomic Examinations Of Interactions Between Common Members Of The Human Gut Microbiota, Michael Mahowald

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The adult human gut microbiota consists of hundreds to thousands of bacterial species, the majority belonging to the Bacteroidetes and the Firmicutes. Differences in the balance between these phyla has been linked to obesity in mice and humans. However, little is known about their interactions in vivo. I have used comparative and functional genomics, proteomics and biochemical assays to identify the ways they marshal their genomic resources to adapt to life together in the distal gut. I first annotated the complete genome sequences of two human gut Bacteroidetes (Bacteroides vulgatus and Parabacteroides distasonis) and two Firmicutes (Eubacterium rectale and E. …

Mechanisms Of Copper Deficiency In The Zebrafish Embryo, Erik Madsen Jan 2010

Mechanisms Of Copper Deficiency In The Zebrafish Embryo, Erik Madsen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Proper maternal nutrition is critical for early embryonic development. Despite overwhelming epidemiologic data indicating the benefits nutrient supplementation for the developing organism we do not fully understand the genetics of predisposition to abnormal developmental phenotypes when faced with suboptimal nutrient levels. Copper is an essential nutrient required for critical biochemical processes. Severe defects in copper homeostasis lead to significant disease typified by the X-linked recessive disorder Menkes disease. Patients with Menkes disease have cutis laxa, bone deformities, hypopigmentation, arterial malformation, and neurodegeneration due to copper deficiency caused by loss-of-function mutations in ATP7A, a copper transport protein. Despite the critical requirement …

Mitotic Cell Cycle Progression And Differentiation Of Germline Stem Cells In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Paul Fox Jan 2010

Mitotic Cell Cycle Progression And Differentiation Of Germline Stem Cells In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Paul Fox

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the C. elegans germline, stem cells make a decision to retain the germline proliferative cell fate or differentiate by entering meiosis. Importantly, this decision must be coordinated with progression through the mitotic cell cycle. Previous work has shown that the conserved GLP-1/Notch signaling pathway promotes the proliferative fate while two downstream and redundant pathways are repressed by GLP-1 and promote entry into meiosis: the GLD-1 and GLD-2 pathways. To better understand how the switch to enter meiosis is coordinated with progression through the mitotic cell cycle, I investigated mitotic cell cycle progression among germline proliferative cells. Proliferative cells cycle …

Mechanisms Of Copper-Dependent Notochord Formation In Zebrafish, John Gansner Jan 2010

Mechanisms Of Copper-Dependent Notochord Formation In Zebrafish, John Gansner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The interplay of genes and nutrition during early development profoundly impacts fetal outcome. Copper is an essential nutrient required for the redox activity of many enzymes, and recent work in our laboratory has elucidated the phenotype of copper deficiency in zebrafish, which includes a strikingly distorted notochord. The studies described here establish the specific genetic etiology of this distortion and reveal a number of gene-gene and gene-nutrient interactions critical to notochord morphogenesis. We first demonstrate that the notochord distortion observed in copper-deficient zebrafish results from lysyl oxidase cuproenzyme inhibition. Four lysyl oxidase family members are expressed throughout the developing zebrafish …

Hawthorn Extract - Viable Treatment For Cardiovascular Disease Or Unscrupulous Herbal Supplement?, Andrea Lowing, Frank Sylvester Jan 2010

Hawthorn Extract - Viable Treatment For Cardiovascular Disease Or Unscrupulous Herbal Supplement?, Andrea Lowing, Frank Sylvester

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

In the past Hawthorn leaves, berries and flowers have been used in Asia to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and other cardiovascular diseases. It is hypothesized that the Hawthorn extract acts as a vasodilator increasing the size of the lumen of blood vessels by relaxing the smooth muscle. This occurs by decreasing the amount of calcium that is present in the cytosol by either increasing the effectiveness of the Ca2+ -ATPase pump or by altering the Na+ -Ca2+ antiport exchanger. With this decrease in cytosolic calcium the calcium unbinds from CaM causing the enzyme myosin phosphatase to …

Unveiling The Distinction Between The University And Its Academic Researchers: Lessons For Patent Infringement And University Technology Transfer, Jennifer Carter-Johnson Jan 2010

Unveiling The Distinction Between The University And Its Academic Researchers: Lessons For Patent Infringement And University Technology Transfer, Jennifer Carter-Johnson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article explores the idea that a faculty member acting in the role of an academic researcher in the scientific disciplines should be viewed in the context of patent law as an autonomous entity within the university rather than as an agent of the university. The structure of the university laboratory within the university and the social norms associated with the activities that members of the research laboratory conduct supports such a view. Additionally, the data from the implementation of the Bayh-Dole Act reveal that universities and faculty scientists have different goals and motivations regarding the transfer of new technology …

Menarche usually occurs during the earlier time of the second decade of life and ends with menopause, typically in the 5th decade of life. The adolescent can present with a wide variety of menstrual dilemmas and disorders which will be discussed in this chapter.

Undocumented Migrant Workers In A Fragmented International Order, Chantal Thomas Jan 2010

Undocumented Migrant Workers In A Fragmented International Order, Chantal Thomas

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Paper tries to show the effects of a central challenge of contemporary global governance: the "interaction between normative orders that are fundamentally different in their underlying conceptual structure." The argument is that the dynamics of globalization create and accentuate particular social phenomena as well as efforts towards coordinated regulation of these phenomena, but that the latter are far from sufficient to meet the former. A further assertion is that global relations and distributions of power determine the operation of this fragmented framework. Social vulnerability is reflected in and reinforced by it. As such, the undocumented migrant worker challenges, in …

This study examined the rates and risks of premature neonates >2500grams developing intraoperative non-euglycemia events (IONEE). A retrospective chart review of 26 premature neonates >2500 grams who underwent surgical procedures between January 1 and December 31, 2009 was conducted. Statistical analysis was done using Chi square and t-tests. Ten of the 26 subjects (38%) experienced an IONEE. Hyperglycemia was the primary IONEE that was noted in the neonates. (Mean: 143.19; sd: 56.041) Length of surgery was significantly longer in those premature neonates with IONEE than those with euglycemia (71.7 0± 27.03 vs. 45.62 ± 17.98 minutes). All IONEE subjects received …

Maternal Employment And Childhood Obesity Among Immigrant Families, Qi Zhang Jan 2010

Maternal Employment And Childhood Obesity Among Immigrant Families, Qi Zhang

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

There are continued interests to examine the relationship between maternal employment and childhood obesity. However, little research has been focused on childhood obesity among immigrant families with working mothers. This study used the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics (PSID) and Child Development Supplement (CDS) in 2002 and compared the impact of maternal employment on childhood obesity between immigrant families and US-born families. The positive effect of maternal employment on children’s body weight status was much stronger in immigrant families than in US-born families. The full-time employment status of mothers had strong and significant effect on immigrant children’s BMI (beta = …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The goal of this study was to investigate three potential ways that the soluble organic nitrogen (N) fraction of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, termed effluent organic N (EON), could contribute to coastal eutrophication - direct biological removal, photochemical release of labile compounds, and salinity-mediated release of ammonium (NH4+). Effluents from two WWTPs were used in the experiments. For the bioassays, EON was added to water from four salinities (∼0 to 30) collected from the James River (VA) in August 2008, and then concentrations of N and phosphorus compounds were measured periodically over 48 h. Bioassay results, based …

Short-Term Effects Of Wildfire On Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Habitat Ecology, Lacey Greene Jan 2010

Short-Term Effects Of Wildfire On Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Habitat Ecology, Lacey Greene

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

We studied changes in vegetation and habitat selection by endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep (Ovis candensis sierrae; hereafter Sierra bighorn) for 2 years following wildfire on winter ranges in eastern California. We hypothesized that wildfire would change both forage availability and predation risk. Green forage biomass on Sierra bighorn winter ranges rebounded quickly from wildfire. Within 2 years green forage biomass was equal in burned and unburned areas, although total forage biomass was greater in unburned areas. Plants in the burn had 3% greater crude protein but equivalent digestibility and phenology. Forage composition in burned areas was forb dominated compared …

Summer Wolf Diet In Northwestern Montana, Jonathan Derbridge Jan 2010

Summer Wolf Diet In Northwestern Montana, Jonathan Derbridge

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wolf (Canis lupus) diet can be estimated from undigested remains of prey in scats or through stable isotope analysis (SIA) of wolf hair when distinct δ13C and δ15N values of potential diet sources are known. Our objectives were to compare diet analysis methods, to estimate intra-population diet variability, and to determine proportions of prey consumed by wolves. We collected scats of 4 wolf packs in northwestern Montana from June to August 2008, and guard hairs of 45 wolves from 12 packs, May to August 2009. We calculated percent biomass consumed of deer (Odocoileus spp.), elk (Cervus canadensis), moose (Alces alces), …

Enhanced Adventitious Shoot Regeneration From Aerial Stem Explants Of Ginger Using Tdz And Its Histological Studies, Adinkudikuyyal Lincy, Bhaskaran Sasikumar

Turkish Journal of Botany

A protocol for direct plantlet regeneration from aerial stem explants of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) has been developed. Adventitious shoots and roots were regenerated from in planta aerial stem explants of 2 ginger varieties viz. var. 'Jamaica' and var. 'Varada'. Maximum shoot and root regeneration were observed in the cultures containing TDZ and IBA (1:1; 1:0.1 mg L-1) in both varieties. Cultures containing TDZ alone showed poor shoot and root formation. Histological studies revealed that the shoot initials originated from the primary thickening meristem and apical meristem, while the root primordial originated from the primary thickening meristem present in the …
