Analysis Of Water Soluble Vitamins In Energy Drinks By Hplc, Stephen P. Sibley, Sarah E.G. Porter Jan 2010

Analysis Of Water Soluble Vitamins In Energy Drinks By Hplc, Stephen P. Sibley, Sarah E.G. Porter

Theses & Honors Papers

Reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was utilized to analyze the ingredients of various dietary supplements. Dietary supplements are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as foods rather than drugs, and as such have very different labeling laws. Specifically, we tested several types of "vitamin water", 5-hour energy, and multi-vitamin supplements to determine if the advertised contents were actually present at the levels specified. Using our method, we were able to simultaneously analyze the B-vitamins present. It was determined that several of the energy drinks contained B-vitamins that were not in agreement with their …

The Ethics Of The Ecology Of Fear Against The Nonspeciesist Paradigm: A Shift In The Aims Of Intervention In Nature, Oscar Horta Jan 2010

The Ethics Of The Ecology Of Fear Against The Nonspeciesist Paradigm: A Shift In The Aims Of Intervention In Nature, Oscar Horta

Between the Species

Humans often intervene in the wild for anthropocentric or environmental reasons. An example of such interventions is the reintroduction of wolves in places where they no longer live in order to create what has been called an “ecology of fear”, which is being currently discussed in places such as Scotland. In the first part of this paper I discuss the reasons for this measure and argue that they are not compatible with a nonspeciesist approach. Then, I claim that if we abandon a speciesist viewpoint we should change completely the way in which we should intervene in nature. Rather than …

Implementing A Solid Waste Management Diversion Program In A Conventional Cook–Serve Hospital System: A Feasibility Study, Marjorie Freedman, Irene Franklin Jan 2010

Implementing A Solid Waste Management Diversion Program In A Conventional Cook–Serve Hospital System: A Feasibility Study, Marjorie Freedman, Irene Franklin

Faculty Publications

Americans generate over 250 million tons of municipal solid waste (trash) each year, with institutional facilities such as hospitals accounting for up to 45% of this waste. Solid waste diversion, through recycling and composting, decreases the waste sent to landfills. The objective of this feasibility study was to implement an integrated solid waste diversion program at a conventional cook–serve kitchen for a 250-bed hospital. The waste diversion program resulted in 1390 pounds of organic matter and recycling being diverted from landfills over 5 days. It is estimated that the continuing program will reduce landfill waste by 51 tons annually.

The Roles Of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, And Speech/Language Pathology In Primary Care, Lauren Peranich, Kristen B. Reynolds, Shirley P. O'Brien, Joni Bosch, Tamara Cranfill

Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Faculty and Staff Research

Occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech language pathology services may be of significant help to patients of nurse practitioners (NPs) in primary care. NPs should be aware of the depth and breadth of services offered by these colleagues, and consider early referral to them. This article describes the different rehabilitation disciplines and some of the ways in which their services may benefit patients. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1555415509005005

Classical And Nonclassical Antifolates: Synthesis Of Furo-[2,3-D] Pyrimidines Pyrrolo[2,3-D]Pyrimidines And Pyrimido-[4, 5-B]-Indoles, Lei Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation will give an introduction, background and our research progress in the areas of antifolates. The design and synthesis of both classical and nonclassical bicyclic furo[2,3-d]pyrimidines, pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidines and tricyclic pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles as potential antifolates have been described. As a part of this study, a total of one hundred and fifty-three new compounds have been synthesized and characterized. Of these, sixty-seven final compounds were submitted for biological evaluation.

Tympanic Temperature In Confined Beef Cattle Exposed To Excessive Heat Load, Terry L. Mader, John B. Gaughan, Leslie J. Johnson, G. Leroy Hahn

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Angus crossbred yearling steers (n=168) were used to evaluate effects on performance and tympanic temperature (TT) of feeding additional potassium and sodium to steers exposed to excessive heat load (maximum daily ambient temperature exceeded 32°C for three consecutive days) during seasonal summer conditions. Steers were assigned one of four treatments: (1) control; (2) potassium supplemented (diet containing 2.10% KHCO3); (3) sodium supplemented (diet containing 1.10% NaCl); or (4) potassium and sodium supplemented (diet containing 2.10% KHCO3 and 1.10% NaCl). Overall, additional KHCO3 at the 2% level or NaCl at the 1% level did not improve performance or heat stress tolerance …

A Second Dimension To The Leaf Economics Spectrum Predicts Edaphic Habitat Association In A Tropical Forest, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas Jan 2010

A Second Dimension To The Leaf Economics Spectrum Predicts Edaphic Habitat Association In A Tropical Forest, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: Strong patterns of habitat association are frequent among tropical forest trees and contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity. The relation of edaphic differentiation to tradeoffs among leaf functional traits is less clear, but may provide insights into mechanisms of habitat partitioning in these species rich assemblages.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We quantify the leaf economics spectrum (LES) for 16 tree species within a Bornean forest characterized by highly pronounced habitat specialization. Our findings suggest that the primary axis of trait variation in light-limited, lowland tropical forests was identical to the LES and corresponds with the shade tolerance continuum. There was no …

Thinking On Paper: Using Science Notebooks To Increase Active Engagement In The Elementary Science Classroom, Kimberly R. Gasaway Jan 2010

Thinking On Paper: Using Science Notebooks To Increase Active Engagement In The Elementary Science Classroom, Kimberly R. Gasaway

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The need for scientific literacy is becoming a new standard to which school districts are being held accountable. Student inquiry and the ability to “think like a scientist” will increase the depth at which students understand the natural world and make connections that are critical in strengthening students' scientific literacy. In addition, research has shown that when students were actively engaged in the learning process, they participated more enthusiastically and retained the concepts being taught. Science notebooks help students learn to record and make sense of data and observations about the natural world and come to deeper understanding of scientific …
