Soybean (Glycine max) is one of the most important crop plants for seed protein and oil content, and for its capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbioses with soil-borne microorganisms. We sequenced the 1.1-gigabase genome by a whole-genome shotgun approach and integrated it with physical and high-density genetic maps to create a chromosome-scale draft sequence assembly. We predict 46,430 protein-coding genes, 70% more than Arabidopsis and similar to the poplar genome which, like soybean, is an ancient polyploid (palaeopolyploid). About 78% of the predicted genes occur in chromosome ends, which comprise less than one-half of the genome but …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background: Morinda citrifolia (Noni) is an edible plant with wide range of medicinal uses. It occurs exclusively in tropical climate zone from India through Southeast Asia and Australia to Eastern Polynesia and Hawaii. The objective of this study was to explore the possible mode(s) of action for its antispasmodic, vasodilator and cardio-suppressant effects to rationalize its medicinal use in gut and cardiovascular disorders. Methods: Isolated tissue preparations such as, rabbit jejunum, rat and rabbit aorta and guinea pig atria were used to test the antispasmodic and cardiovascular relaxant effects and the possible mode of action(s) of the 70% aqueous-ethanolic extract …

Diurnal Movements And Site Fidelity Of The Florida Manatee, Trichechus Manatus Latirostris, In Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Kym Walsh
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The diurnal movements of Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in warmwater refugia are poorly understood and these may prove critical in accurately estimating populations of these animals. Previous studies indicate that manatee populations in such refuges in Tampa Bay, FL, peak mid-day and decline towards evening when the animals leave to forage. This trend suggests that variation in the timing of aerial manatee population surveys may hamper accurate estimation of the true population size. Aerial survey counts are known to underestimate population size, yet the extent of the underestimation may be greater than expected. In this study data …

This study examined the similarities and differences among 171 Grade 7-12 science teachers from three different countries (54 U.S, 63 Bolivian, and 54 Turkish) with respect to their attitudes toward environmental education (EE) and instructional practices. The instrument employed explored how teachers‘ knowledge, instructional practices, decisionmaking process, and cultural features influenced their EE attitudes and praxis. The instrument, which was translated into Spanish and Turkish and then back into English, contained a personal data form that included demographic questions and a three-part questionnaire. Based on the analysis completed, significant differences were found between these three countries with respect to 1) …
Digestion And Metabolism Of Diets Containing Increasing Levels Of Corn Germ, R.H. Pritchard, G.B. Kleinhans
Digestion And Metabolism Of Diets Containing Increasing Levels Of Corn Germ, R.H. Pritchard, G.B. Kleinhans
South Dakota Beef Report, 2010
A novel germ fraction is being generated by the BFrac™4 process. The 20% fat, dry, flowable material is a potential source of concentrated energy to include in Northern Plains feedlot diets. A metabolism study with wethers was conducted to evaluate how ruminants would respond to this additional fat intake in finishing diets. Total collections of urine and feces were conducted on 23 wethers fed pelleted, high‐corn content, iso‐nitrogenous diets that included 0, 10, 20, or 30% germ. Each 6‐d collection period followed 21 d adaptation periods. Increasing BFrac™ germ content caused (P < 0.01) an increase in DMI and a linear (P < 0.001) decrease in DM digestibility, probably due to the effect of DMI. There was a quadratic (P < 0.01) increase in EE digestibility, plateauing at 10% germ. Dietary DE, kcal/g declined linearly (P < 0.01) but DE intake (kcal/d) increased linearly (P < 0.05) because of higher DMI. There was no (P > 0.15) dietary effect on N digestibility, but there …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Background: Classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is an acquired prion disease of cattle. The bovine prion gene (PRNP) contains regions of both high and low linkage disequilibrium (LD) that appear to be conserved across Bos taurus populations. The region of high LD, which spans the promoter and part of intron 2, contains polymorphic loci that have been associated with classical BSE status. However, the complex genetic architecture of PRNP has not been systematically tested for an association with classical BSE.
Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study, haplotype tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (htSNPs) within PRNP were used to test for association between …
