Sdsu Irm‐Spa: Trend Analysis 2002 – 2008, E.M. Mousel
South Dakota Beef Report, 2010
Production and financial efficiency data from cow‐calf producers in eastern South Dakota was analyzed. Data was collected from 2002‐2008; each herd represented one observation. The database consisted of 210 production observations and 140 financial observations. Analysis of production efficiency data was conducted according to the SPA guidelines, developed by the IRM Coordinating Committee of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Financial data was collected using the SPA system, in accordance with the SPA guidelines as well information collected from IRS Schedule F to calculate operating expense ratio (OER). Overall trends suggested that following the market peak of 2005, production efficiency has …

The Ocular Orientation Center: Using The Built Environment As A Means Of Wayfinding, Kara Lane Smolca
Architecture Theses and Projects
WAYFINDING encompasses all of the ways in which people orient themselves in a physical space and navigating from place to place. The idea that the built environment can provide a means to WAYFIND suggests that architecture must be more than an iconic image. It must be enhance all of the senses in order to lead the way for those needing direction. The OOC provides a place for the Blind and visually impaired to learn about eye care as well as interact with those experiencing the same difficulties and life changes. The center concentrates the shared experiences and places where socialization …

Effect Of Maternal Nutrition On Fetal Adipocyte Development, T.D. Jennings, K.R. Underwood, A.E. Wertz-Lutz, A.D. Weaver
South Dakota Beef Report, 2010
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of maternal nutrition on the expression of genes in fetal tissues. Genes of interest were selected because each has been demonstrated previously to influence body composition. Twenty‐two Angus‐cross bred heifers (BW = 1161 ± 19 lbs) randomly were assigned to three dietary treatments. Maternal dietary treatments were formulated and intake was controlled to provide 150% (HIGH), 100% (INT), and 80% (LOW) of maintenance energy requirements for growing pregnant Angus heifers (NRC, 2000). Heifers were on dietary treatment from d 85 to d 180 of gestation, at which point fetuses were …

Why Grow Clovers?, Don Ball, Garry D. Lacefield
Why Grow Clovers?, Don Ball, Garry D. Lacefield
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Clovers have long been viewed as being special and beneficial pasture plants, but recently the incentives livestock producers have to grow them have further increased. Why are many people more interested than ever in growing clovers in pastures as companion species with grasses? Here are several reasons that collectively make a compelling case.

Effects Of Small Increases In Corticosterone Levels On Morphology, Immune Function, And Feather Development, Michael W. Butler, Lynda L. Leppert, Alfred M. Dufty Jr.
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Stressors encountered during avian development may affect an individual’s phenotype, including immunocompetence, growth, and feather quality. We examined effects of simulated chronic low-level stress on American kestrel (Falco sparverius) nestlings. Continuous release of corticosterone, a hormone involved in the stress response, can model chronic stress in birds. We implanted 13-d-old males with either corticosterone-filled implants or shams and measured their growth, immune function, and feather coloration. We found no significant differences between groups at the end of the weeklong exposure period in morphometrics (mass, tarsus, wing length, and asymmetry), immunocompetence (cutaneous immunity, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, and humoral immunity), or feather …

The Presence Of Growth Hormone Secretagogue Receptor (Ghrelin Receptor) In Metabolic Tissues Of Beef Cattle With Differences In Composition Of Gain, J.S. Jennings, J.A. Clapper, A.D. Weaver, A.E. Wertz-Lutz
South Dakota Beef Report, 2010
Beef steers (n = 72) of similar age, weight (651 ± 3.1 lb), and genetic (Angus crossbred) background were used to determine the effects of growing diet composition (high‐forage vs. high‐concentrate) on the abundance of growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS‐R or ghrelin receptor) in metabolically important tissues of beef cattle. At trial initiation (d 0), 8 steers were harvested for initial carcass composition. The remaining 64 steers were allotted, by weight, to pen and treatment was assigned randomly. Treatments were 1) a high‐forage diet fed during the growing period (116 d) followed by a high‐concentrate diet during the finishing period …

Toward More Inclusive College Savings Plans: Sample State Legislation, Terry Lassar, Margaret M. Clancy, Sarah Mcclure
Center for Social Development Research
A number of states have created inclusive 529 policy strategies to make college savings plans more accessible and easier to use for families at all income levels. These strategies include facilitating enrollment and contributions, removing saving disincentives, increasing saving incentives, and strengthening tax benefits. In this report, we examine these inclusive state policy strategies, describe their application through legislative and administrative means, and point to specific examples.A related policy brief by the same title is also available.

Background: Infantile spasms represent a serious epileptic syndrome that occurs in the early infantile age. ACTH and Vigabatrin are actively investigated drugs in its treatment. This study describes the comparison of their efficacy in a large series of Patients with infantile spasms from Pakistan. Methods: All Patients with infantile spasms who presented to Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan from January, 2006 to April, 2008 were included in this study. Inclusion criteria were clinical symptoms of infantile spasms, hypsarrythmia or modified hyparrythmia on electroencephalography, at least six months of follow-up period and receipt of any of the two drugs mentioned …
An Integrative -Omics Approach To Identify Functional Sub-Networks In Human Colorectal Cancer, Rod K. Nibbe, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance
An Integrative -Omics Approach To Identify Functional Sub-Networks In Human Colorectal Cancer, Rod K. Nibbe, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance
Faculty Scholarship
Emerging evidence indicates that gene products implicated in human cancers often cluster together in "hot spots" in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. Additionally, small sub-networks within PPI networks that demonstrate synergistic differential expression with respect to tumorigenic phenotypes were recently shown to be more accurate classifiers of disease progression when compared to single targets identified by traditional approaches. However, many of these studies rely exclusively on mRNA expression data, a useful but limited measure of cellular activity. Proteomic profiling experiments provide information at the post-translational level, yet they generally screen only a limited fraction of the proteome. Here, we demonstrate that …

Analysis Of The Uk Recommendations On Obesity Based On A Proposed Implementation Framework, Amudha S. Poobalan, Lorna S. Aucott, Sheraz Ahmed, W. Cairns S. Smith
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: There is considerable expertise in the obesity field in identifying, appraising, and synthesising evidence to develop guidelines and recommendations for policy and practice. The recommendations, while based on evidence, are not formulated in a way that readily leads to implementation. This paper analyses the recent UK recommendations on obesity using a proposed implementation framework. Methods: Two bibliographic databases (Medline and Embase) and various health related and government websites were systematically searched for obesity recommendations published between 1996 and 2007. All the documents published on recommendations for either prevention or treatment of obesity in the UK were assessed. A proposed …
Assessing The Impact Of A Modernized Application Process On Florida’S Food Stamp Caseload, Colleen Heflin, Peter Mueser
Assessing The Impact Of A Modernized Application Process On Florida’S Food Stamp Caseload, Colleen Heflin, Peter Mueser
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
In 2005, Florida implemented an internet-based service delivery system for eligibility determination in public assistance programs, including the Food Stamp, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and the Medicaid programs. At the same time, Florida switched from a caseworker model to a technology-driven model and decreased staffing levels of employees involved in social service delivery. We conduct an evaluative case study of the effects of these policy changes on the Food Stamp caseload. In particular, we consider the impact on applications and the flows onto and off of the program. To answer these questions, we use administrative data from the …
