Mercury In The Environment: Field Studies From Tampa, Bolivia, And Guyana, Joniqua A'Ja Howard
Mercury In The Environment: Field Studies From Tampa, Bolivia, And Guyana, Joniqua A'Ja Howard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tampa (US), Guyana (SA), and Bolivia (SA), are geographically, socially, economically, and politically unique which make them ideal sites to study issues of mercury and sustainability. Mercury’s innate ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems poses a severe threat to both human and environmental health. The most vulnerable populations affected by mercury consumption include coastal communities, children, women of child-bearing age, the indigenous poor and persons with high environmental/occupational exposure factors. Communities in the regions of Florida, Bolivia, and Guyana whose diets are high in fish and are environmentally/occupationally exposed to mercury may be at a higher …

Campaigns To Change Health Damaging Corporate Practices, Nicholas Freudenberg
Campaigns To Change Health Damaging Corporate Practices, Nicholas Freudenberg
Publications and Research
When corporations claim the same citizenship rights as human citizens, they exercise an undue influence on health policy and democratic processes. Surprisingly, the same basic repertoire of tactics has been found to be employed by corporations to effect this influence, regardless of the specific industry at work. In this book, authors from around the world reveal the range of tactics used across the corporate world that ultimately favor the bottom line over the greater good.
The Bottom Line or Public Health deconstructs some of the most ubiquitous tactics at play, including public relations, political influence, legal maneuvering, and financial power, …

Energy Restriction During Breeding Gilt Development: An Economic Analysis, Justin Cech, Darrell R. Mark, Roger K. Wilson
Energy Restriction During Breeding Gilt Development: An Economic Analysis, Justin Cech, Darrell R. Mark, Roger K. Wilson
Cornhusker Economics
Swine production has increasingly become a lowmargin business. As costs of production have increased, producers are continuing to increase efficiency in both market pig production and gilt development. Restricting energy during gilt development reduces feeding costs and can enhance some productivity measures, but can also negatively impact other areas of production. Thus, the net economic returns from a restricted energy gilt development program are unclear. This study utilized gilt development and market pig production data for two genetic lines of hogs, LWxLR (a cross between industry Large White and Landrace) and L45X (a Nebraska line selected 23 generations for increased …

Nutritional Assessment And Chemical Composition Of Raw And Defatted Luffa Cylindrica Seed Flour, A. S. Abitogun, A. O. Ashogbon
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The raw and defatted Luffa cylindrical seed flours were characterized with respect to their proximate, mineral and energy using standard analytical technique. The range values of the proximate analysis for raw and defatted samples were; crude protein (42.17-70.65%), moisture (5.69-6.42%), fat content (1.53- 33.64%), ash content (3.87-3.92%), crude fibre (1.95-2.80%), carbohydrate (12.68-14.68%) and the available energy range was (1507.53-2177.13KJ). The minerals determined and their range values in mg/100g for raw and defatted samples were; K (910-960), Na (28-31), Zn (0.86-1.50), Mg (16-18), Fe (4.67- 6.23), P (680-660), Ca (40.24-43.44), Mn (4.20-4.47) and Cu (1.10-1.24). The results revealed that crude protein …

Should The Concentration Of Vitamin D Be Measured In All Patients With Hypertension?, Angela Boldo, Patrick Campbell, Pooja Luthra, William B. White
UCHC Articles - Research
With mounting evidence indicating the direct effect of vitamin D on the vascular smooth muscle cell, endothelial function and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, it is clear that randomized trials of vitamin D replacement and renin and angiotensin inhibition in patients with hypertension and vitamin D deficiency are warranted. Preliminary research has shown an inverse relationship between BP and vitamin D levels, and supplementation appears promising. To that end, we have just initiated a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effects of vitamin D and/or a renin inhibitor on ambulatory and clinic BP in vitamin D deficient patients with hypertension (clinical trials.gov identifier …
