Healthy And Affordable Food In Low-Income Neighborhoods: A Community Food Security Assessment Of Smith Hill, Kelly Bevis

Social Work Theses

Community food security refers to a situation where all residents in a community can access affordable and nutritionally adequate foods. When a community has difficultly accessing healthy and affordable food, it is an issue of community food insecurity; low-income and urban communities experience this problem greatly. Key indicators of food insecurity include households with incomes below the poverty line, minority households, female-headed households, households with children, a lack of a supermarket and lack of adequate transportation. This study examined the issue of community food security in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence, RI. It was hypothesized that the Smith Hill …

Economic Development, Inequality And Malnutrition In India, Arnab Mukherji, Divya Rajaraman, Hema Swaminathan

Working Papers

Economic development and inequality is known to have an impact on health outcomes. We show this to be true in India where we study the effect of economic status on under and over nutrition. Inequality is measured using income or assets and we show that both matter for malnutrition. We find women are at much higher risk of being malnourished and this risk increases with age. Our results suggest that while under nutrition should remain a policy priority, rising over nutrition in the population cannot be ignored by nutritional planners.

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is characterized by rapid progression and low survival rates. Therefore, novel therapeutic agents are urgently needed for this disease. Capsaicin, the active ingredient of chilli peppers, displays antiproliferative activity in prostate and epidermoid cancer in vitro. However, the anti-proliferative activity of capsaicin has not been studied in human SCLCs. The present manuscript fills this void of knowledge and explores the anti-proliferative effect of capsaicin in SCLC in vitro and in vivo.

Methodology/Principal Findings: BrdU assays and PCNA ELISAs showed that capsaicin displays robust anti-proliferative activity in four human SCLC cell lines. Furthermore, capsaicin potently …

A Doctor Among The Oglala Sioux Tribe, Robert H. Ruby

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In 1953 young surgeon Robert H. Ruby began work as the chief medical officer at the hospital on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He began writing almost daily to his sister, describing the Oglala Lakota people he served, his Bureau of Indian Affairs colleagues, and day-to-day life on the reservation. Ruby and his wife were active in the social life of the non-white community, which allowed Ruby, also a self-trained ethnographer, to write in detail about the Oglala Lakota people and their culture, covering topics such as religion, art, traditions, and values. His frank and personal depiction …

Student Nutrition And Academic Achievement, Lindsey M. Dodsworth Apr 2010

Student Nutrition And Academic Achievement, Lindsey M. Dodsworth

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Proper nutrition that abides by United States Dietary Guidelines is critical in the cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical functioning of students. Food and drink choices that students make are heavily based on their preferences and what is available to them. Students who consume balanced, nutrient dense food and drink perform better in areas of participation, behavior, attendance and get their assigned tasks done more completely than students who do not eat well. Young people of today will be functioning members of society in the future so equipping them with proper education and skills for success is a critical role that …

Subjective Versus Objective Hearing Screening Results Of Rural Elementary School-Aged Children, Meagan Chatelain Mcclure Apr 2010

Subjective Versus Objective Hearing Screening Results Of Rural Elementary School-Aged Children, Meagan Chatelain Mcclure

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study compared the pass/refer results of traditional ASHA recommended hearing screenings to transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and screening tympanometry among young students at a rural, medically underserved population at an elementary school. Sixty-seven students (31 boys and 36 girls) from kindergarten to 3rd grade participated in this study. Ten were Hispanic and had English as a second language. Each child had his/her hearing screened at 500 Hz and by the ASHA recommended method for pure tone screenings and by TEOAEs and DPOAEs. Tympanometry was also performed on 53 students. The results revealed …

Connecting Math And Science To Home, School And Community Through Preservice Teacher Education, Cherie Mccollough, Olga Ramirez Apr 2010

Connecting Math And Science To Home, School And Community Through Preservice Teacher Education, Cherie Mccollough, Olga Ramirez

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The importance of parental involvement in enhancing the quality of their children’s educational experiences and academic success is well documented in the literature (Chrispeels & Rivero, 2001; Cordry & Wilson, 2004; Delgado-Gaitan, 2001; Dierking & Falk, 1994; Jones &Valdez, 1997; Quezada, Diaz, Sanchez, 2003; Valdes, 1996). Parent involvement results in higher reading scores, greater language growth and development, and increased motivation to achieve (Harvard Family Research Project, 2007). Parental involvement includes a wide range of activities from promoting the importance of education to participating in the decision-making and operations of schools. For maximum results, there should be some alignment between …

Livestock Animal Cloning: This Steak Is Giving Me Déjà Vu, Blake M. Mensing Apr 2010

Livestock Animal Cloning: This Steak Is Giving Me Déjà Vu, Blake M. Mensing

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Somatic cell nuclear transfer, more commonly known as cloning, received international attention when scientists introduced Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal ever successfully cloned using an adult cell. In many American minds, cloning evokes Frankensteinian images of mad scientists and their quest to throw off the shackles of nature’s limitations. In the real world, cloning probably only shares one trait with the trials and tribulations of science fiction’s most memorable characters: an enormously high rate of failure.

Food Allergies In Public Schools: Toward A Model Code, Michael Borella Apr 2010

Food Allergies In Public Schools: Toward A Model Code, Michael Borella

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Sufferers of food allergies can experience anaphylactic shock, and even death, within minutes of exposure to allergens such as peanuts, soy, wheat, eggs, milk, and fish. This causes unique problems when the food allergy sufferers are children in public schools. The widespread availability of these allergens in school lunchrooms and classrooms places children with food allergies in danger while they are entrusted to the government's care. Since these children, especially young children, cannot be relied upon to be able to avoid allergens on their own, reasonable and logical laws should be in place to ensure that children are safe while …

In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Of Sapindus Mukorossi And Emblica Officinalis Against Dental Caries Pathogens, Kamal Rai Aneja, Radhika Joshi, Chetan Sharma

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The in vitro antimicrobial activity of Sapindus mukorossi and Emblica officinalis fruit extracts were studied against Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The acetone, ethanol, methanol, hot water and cold water extracts of S.mukorossi exhibited antimicrobial activity against one of the tested microorganisms i.e. S.cerevisiae. All the five extracts of E.officinalis showed inhibitory activity against S.mutans while the acetonic, hot and cold aqueous extracts showed inhibitory activity against S.aureus also. The largest zone of inhibition was obtained with the acetonic extract of S.mukorossi against S.cerevisiae (29.65mm) and hot water extract of E.officinalis against S.aureus (40.32mm). …

Bilingual-Bicultural Teachers' Cultural Competence Development Blueprint In Predominantly Subtractive Bilingualism Contexts: Insights From Research Literature, Valentin Ekiaka Nzai,, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Recent studies on quality education for diverse classrooms suggest cultural competence as a prerequisite for culturally responsive teaching. A critical analysis of teacher education strategies aimed at increasing pre-service teachers’ cultural competence, in mostly white-serving and traditional teacher education programs, reveals that such approaches generally situate white teacher candidates only as closely as the periphery of bilingual students’ cultures. Further, while a number of diversity-oriented educational programs have been designed for white pre-service teachers, there currently exists no coherent and comprehensive framework for developing U.S.-born bilingual pre-service teachers’ bilingual-bicultural competences in predominantly white-serving and traditional teacher education programs. This paper …
