Behavioral Consequences Of Nmda Antagonist-Induced Neuroapoptosis In The Infant Mouse Brain, George T. Taylor, Carla M. Yuede, David F. Wozniak, John W. Olney

Psychology Faculty Works

Background: Exposure to NMDA glutamate antagonists during the brain growth spurt period causes widespread neuroapoptosis in the rodent brain. This period in rodents occurs during the first two weeks after birth, and corresponds to the third trimester of pregnancy and several years after birth in humans. The developing human brain may be exposed to NMDA antagonists through drug-abusing mothers or through anesthesia. Methodology/Principal Findings: We evaluated the long-term neurobehavioral effects of mice exposed to a single dose of the NMDA antagonist, phencyclidine (PCP), or saline, on postnatal day 2 (P2) or P7, or on both P2 and P7. PCP treatment …

Comparing Observations Of Age At First Reproduction In Western Gray Whales To Estimates Of Age At Sexual Maturity In Eastern Gray Whales, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Aimée R. Lang, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Age at first reproduction (AFR) is a basic component of age-structured whale assessment models, but direct estimates of this parameter do not exist for either the abundant eastern or critically endangered western population of gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus). Instead, assessments of both populations have utilized either of two recognized estimates of eastern gray whale age at sexual maturity (ASM) that are adjusted by a year to account for fetal gestation. These ASM estimates are: 1) 9 years median, 6-12 years range, and 2) 6 years median, 5-9 years range, but there are biases and discrepancies associated with these …

Chicago Journal of International Law

The Doha Development Agenda (Doha Round) of multilateral trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) may fail unless a solution to the establishment of a multilateral register for geographical indications on wines and spirits (GIs) foreseen in the TRIPS Agreement is found Failure of the Doha Round would entail serious intended and unintended consequences for the world trading system. Europe's insistence on a Doha deal on GIs is now accompanied by demands from several developing countries for an extension of GI protection to products other than wines and spirits. Those demanders consider the current emphasis on alcoholic beverages to …

A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer Jun 2010

A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer

Publications

This article illuminates the geographic concept of ‘place’ in local foods. Because the social aspects of local food have been more fully addressed in previous literature, this review focuses instead on the ecological aspects of farming and food. First, the literature on natural resource use in agriculture provides contextual understanding of water use, biodiversity, soils and agro-ecological methods. The complex relationship between climate change and agriculture is described and models assessing the impacts of climate change on agriculture are detailed. The geography of local food is specifically addressed by describing methods for assessing natural resource use in local food, including …
