Increasing Healthy Food Choices In Preschoolers Using Correspondence Training And Recruiting Natural Communities Of Reinforcement, Elyse D. Wiseman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a contributing factor to many diseases. Unhealthy food choices are a behavior that can lead to obesity. Teaching children to make healthy food choices at an early age could lead to healthy food choices throughout a lifetime, which would mitigate potential for obesity. A number of different treatments have evaluated healthy food choices in children; however, many did not evaluate or show maintenance effects. The purpose of this study was to utilize correspondence training to acquire healthy food choices in preschoolers and to evaluate of natural communities of reinforcement as a maintenance procedure. Results showed that correspondence training …

The Social Responsibility Of The Foodservice Industry: The Need For Action Regarding The Obesity Crisis, Audrey C. Mccool, Barent N. Mccool

Caesars Hospitality Research Summit

Abstract: Obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Costs associated with obesity pose a severe threat to the U.S. economy. Evidence indicates the foodservice industry has had a major role contributing to the obesity crisis; thus it is argued that the industry has an ethical and social responsibility to now aggressively adopt socially responsible actions that will help alleviate the increasing incidence of obesity. Such actions might include innovative advertising initiatives, modification of portion sizes, and nutrition labeling so that consumers can make healthful food selections. Even though such actions might result in short-term profit losses, socially responsible actions have the potential …

Development Of Novel Image Analysis Methods For The Morphological Quantification Of Filamentous Fungi, David Barry Jun 2010

Development Of Novel Image Analysis Methods For The Morphological Quantification Of Filamentous Fungi, David Barry

Doctoral

Mycelial morphology is a critically important process property in fermentations of lamentous micro-organisms, as particular phenotypes are associated with maximum productivity. The design of systems capable of rapidly and accurately characterising morphology within a given process represents a signi cant challenge to biotechnologists, as the complex phenotypes that are manifested are often not easily quanti ed. A system has been developed for high-resolution characterisation of lamentous fungal growth, using membrane immobilization and fully-automatic imageprocessing software. The system has been used to quantify the early-stage hyphal di erentiation of Aspergillus oryzae on solid substrates, by measuring spore projected area and circularity, …

Aesthetics Vs. Anesthesia: C.S. Lewis On The Purpose Of Art, Charlie W. Starr Jun 2010

Aesthetics Vs. Anesthesia: C.S. Lewis On The Purpose Of Art, Charlie W. Starr

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Contemporary Christian culture does not know what art is for. C.S. Lewis did. First of all, he understood that Christians should not try to change culture by turning art into propaganda. The first purpose of art is not to be didactic but to be beautiful and provide pleasure and play. It may have secondary purposes – to inspire, to draw us to God – but art cannot achieve these purposes without achieving the first. Secondly, Lewis knew that we should not simply analyze art for its philosophical underpinnings. Though Lewis recognized the need for worldview analysis, this approach devalues play …

A Functional Calcium-Transporting Atpase Encoded By Chlorella Viruses, Maria Cristina Bonza, Holger Martin, Ming Kang, Gentry L. Lewis, Timo Greiner, Sonia Giacometti, James L. Van Etten, Maria Ida De Michelis, Gerhard Thiel, Anna Moroni

James Van Etten Publications

Calcium-transporting ATPases (Ca2+ pumps) are major players in maintaining calcium homeostasis in the cell and have been detected in all cellular organisms. Here, we report the identification of two putative Ca2+ pumps, M535L and C785L, encoded by chlorella viruses MT325 and AR158, respectively, and the functional characterization of M535L. Phylogenetic and sequence analyses place the viral proteins in group IIB of P-type ATPases even though they lack a typical feature of this class, a calmodulin-binding domain. A Ca2+ pump gene is present in 45 of 47 viruses tested and is transcribed during virus infection. Complementation analysis of …
