Coping With Negative Feedback In The Health Domain: Are Race Differences In Coping Related To Weight Disparities Among Blacks And Whites?, Lindsay Renee Kraynak
Coping With Negative Feedback In The Health Domain: Are Race Differences In Coping Related To Weight Disparities Among Blacks And Whites?, Lindsay Renee Kraynak
Psychology - Theses
While overweight and obesity are problems for many adults, there are significant racial disparities, such that Blacks suffer higher rates than Whites. A number of health conditions that are linked to overweight and obesity, including diabetes and hypertension are also more prevalent among Blacks than among Whites (Glover, Greenlund, Ayla, & Croft, 2005; Pleis & Lethbridge-Çejku, 2007). With the knowledge that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has suggested that there are psychological components to obesity, this research aims to investigate psychological components that may contribute to the weight/health disparity between Blacks and Whites. Other research has demonstrated that …

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has been steadily rising in the United States. The condition is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and is preceded by insulin resistance. Before the onset of T2D patients go through a state of pre-diabetes. To be tested for pre-diabetes and diabetes, either a Fasting Plasma Glucose test or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test may be used. While an estimated 24 million Americans have T2D, another 57 million Americans are estimated to be in a state of pre-diabetes. There are many risk factors that may contribute to the development of T2D including obesity, a high calorie …
Mental Health And Women’S Receipt Of Recommended Preventive Care, Melanie M. Race
Mental Health And Women’S Receipt Of Recommended Preventive Care, Melanie M. Race
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Recent studies have suggested that individuals with mental health conditions experience higher morbidity and mortality than individuals without mental disorders (Colton and Manderscheid, 2006; Osborn et al., 2007). Improving health outcomes for individuals with mental health conditions may require that providers, policymakers, and insurers pay particular attention to the primary care provided to these individuals. High-quality primary care means having a usual source of care and receiving appropriate preventive care, including routine physical examinations and recommended screenings. Some studies suggest that women with mental health conditions receive preventive care at lower rates than women without mental health conditions.
Meta-Analysis Of Fertilization Experiments Indicates Multiple Limiting Nutrients In Northeastern Deciduous Forests, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Meta-Analysis Of Fertilization Experiments Indicates Multiple Limiting Nutrients In Northeastern Deciduous Forests, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
All Materials
It is widely accepted that nitrogen limits primary production in temperate forests, although co-limitation by N and P has also been suggested, and on some soils Ca and base cations are in short supply. I conducted a meta-analysis to assess the strength of existing experimental evidence for limitation of primary production by N, P, and Ca in hardwood forests of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, using data from 35 fertilization experiments in deciduous forests on glaciated soils across the region.
There is strong evidence for N limitation (formal meta-analysis weighted mean response ratio = 1.51, p < 0.01; simple mean = 1.42, p < 0.001). Forest productivity also tends to increase with additions of P (simple mean = 1.15, p = 0.05) and Ca (simple mean = 1.36 p < 0.001). Across all treatments, 85% of response ratios were positive. Multiple-element additions had larger effects than single elements, but factorial experiments showed little evidence of synergistic effects between nutrient additions. Production responses correlated positively with the rate of N fertilization, but this effect was reduced at high rates of ambient N deposition.
Identification Of L1334, A Unique Glycopeptidolipid Isolated From A M. Smegmatis Msmeg1604 Mutant And Functional Characterization Of Rv3409c From M. Tuberculosis, Jin Gao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
M. tuberculosis has a cholesterol oxidizing activity that initiates sterol metabolism, which may be related to its virulence. Rv3409c of M. tuberculosis H37Rv was annotated as a putative cholesterol oxidase, an enzyme that catalyzes cholesterol modification, based on low similarities with established cholesterol oxidase genes. The Rv3409c gene was heterologously expressed in Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155 and purified. Using established cholesterol oxidase assays, no cholesterol oxidizing activity was detected. The M. smegmatis ortholog MSMEG1604 shares 83% amino acid identity with Rv3409c from M. tuberculosis H37Rv. The M. smegmatis MSMEG1604 transposon mutant (Myc11) oxidized and degraded cholesterol. Therefore, we concluded that …

Validity And Reliability Of An Omega-3 Fatty Acid Food Frequency Questionnaire For First-Generation Midwestern Latinas, Karina R. Lora, Nancy M. Lewis, Kent M. Eskridge, Kaye Stanek-Krogstrand, Paula K. Ritter-Gooder
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
This study tested the hypothesis that a culturally developed omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) could be an accurate instrument to capture n-3 fatty acid food intakes of first-generation Midwestern Latinas. The goal of the study was to assess validity and test-retest reliability of an FFQ to estimate total n-3 fatty acid (total n-3), α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intakes. An n-3 FFQ was developed and pilot tested. Two FFQs and 3 nonconsecutive 24-hour recalls were collected from 162 participants. Pearson correlation and paired t test were used to test the hypothesis. Correlation …

Systemic And Strength Effects : Experimental Concentrations Of Topical Menthol., Lee Jordan Winchester 1984-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Menthol has been regularly utilized as a treatment in sports related injuries for many years, yet little is known about its physiological interactions or its effect on performance. Our previous study indicates that topically applied menthol may cause an acute decrease in blood flow and may improve strength capabilities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of two different concentrations of menthol (3.5% and 10%) on systemic blood flow and strength. 16 subjects participated in this 4 week study examining blood flow and strength effects after menthol or control treatment. Results indicate that the 3.5% menthol causes …

Dimorphism is a highly conserved process in fungi in which a transition between a unicellular, yeast-like growth form and either a unicellular or multicellular, filamentous growth form occurs in response to several different environmental cues. The phytopathogenic fungus Usti/ago maydis undergoes the dimorphic transition from a yeast-like saprobic growth form to a unicellular, hyphal growth form in response to successful mating and subsequent host cues. In addition, U maydis can also undergo haploid filament formation in response to several environmental cues including low ammonium conditions and growth in lipids or acid pH. On solid media deficient in ammonium (SLAD), U …

Curcumin Reactivates Epigenetically Silenced Tumor Suppressor Gene Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor-2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells., Akshata Moghe 1983-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third most fatal, with a rising incidence in the US as a result of the increase in alcoholic liver disease and obesity. Current therapeutic strategies are unsatisfactory with poor treatment outcomes and efficacious therapies are acutely needed for better management of this deadly disease. Curcumin, a phenolic compound from the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa has been shown to inhibit growth and induce cell death in various types of cancer cells including HCC. However, the anti-HCC mode of action of curcumin has not yet been elucidated. In …

Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of A Microfluidic System For Cardiac Cell Culture., Mai-Dung Thi Nguyen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and accounts for nearly 1,372,000 deaths each year. In addition, ~81 million Americans suffer from some form of CVD. Understanding the molecular basis of various manifestations of CVD requires cellular-level studies. However, current technologies for cell culture, fail to recreate the in-vivo environment where cells are subject to pressure and stretch as a consequence of normal hemodynamic loading and unloading. Therefore, to study cardiac cells with physiological relevance, the mechanical loading environment needs to be accurately replicated in-vitro. In order to create an appropriate platform for cardiac …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases Induced Angiogenesis During Transition From Compensatory Cardiac Hypertrophy To Cardiac Failure : Therapeutic Effects Of Hydrogen Sulfide., Srikanth Givvimani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Although matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMPs) play a vital role in tumor angiogenesis and TIMP-3 causes apoptosis, their role in cardiac angiogenesis is unknown. Interestingly, a disruption of coordinated cardiac hypertrophy and angiogenesis contributes to the transition to heart failure, however, the proteolytic and anti-angiogenic mechanisms of transition from compensatory hypertrophy to decompensatory heart failure are unclear. Previous studies have shown the cardio protective role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in myocardial ischemia, infarction and heart failure, but its role during transition from compensatory cardiac hypertrophy to heart failure is yet to be unveiled. We hypothesize …

The Impact Of Parental Risk Factors On Child Outcomes : Examining Parental Incarceration Within A Multiple-Risk Model., Melody Lynn Hyppolite 1976-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of four primary parental risk factors (parental mental illness, parental substance use, parental mental illness, and poverty) on seven child outcomes (school failure, criminal behaviors, being arrested, behavioral difficulties, emotional difficulties, alcohol, and drug use) was examined. The accumulation of multiple risk factors in a child's life was found to significantly increase the likelihood that several negative outcomes would occur. The research, however, suggests further that this is an over simplification of the phenomenon and that specific risk factors are more likely to contribute to specific child outcomes. Depending on the outcome being addressed by programming and policies …

Preparing Low-Income Middle And Secondary Students To Participate Effectively In Academic Discourse Through Writing, Franc Lacinski
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Students from low-income families often perform poorly on formal assessments in language arts. Examining data using the 2008-2009 State of New Jersey Department of Education School Report Cards, a comparison was made between low-income districts and affluent districts in three areas: High School Proficiency Assessment Language Arts Literacy Scores, SAT Verbal Scores and SAT Essay Scores. Students from low-income districts performed significantly lower in these areas than students from the higher income districts and from the average performance rates for the State of New Jersey. This lag in performance affects students’ choices for higher education, for job opportunities, as well …

Seed Removal By The Red-Rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta Leporina, On A Caribbean Island, Benton Taylor
All Theses
Agoutis are important seed dispersers as well as predators of numerous plant species in Neotropical continental rainforests, but little is known about their role as seed removers (dispersers and predators) on islands. We investigated seed removal of seven rain forest species on the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles by the entire seed-remover community and specifically by the Red-rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta leporina, a scatterhoarding rodent introduced to the island approximately 2500 years ago. We recorded removal rates in three regions of Dominica from 168 experimentally placed seed groups containing a total of 1356 seeds. Seed groups were either accessible …

Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In Eutrophic Estuaries From The Temperate And Sub-Tropical Zones: The Contrasting Roles Of Benthic Suspension-Feeding And Nutrient Loading, Charles C. Wall
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Coastal waters have suffered from multiple stressors that have diminished habitat value and living marine resources in estuaries. Excess nutrient loading, leading to eutrophication, has been identified as a primary driver of these changes. Some level of nutrient loading is necessary to sustain production in marine systems, but the level of appropriate nutrient loading for a given estuary or resource species is unknown. Benthic suspension feeders, such as bivalves and sponges, have the potential to buffer or mediate eutrophication through their filtration activities. Many eutrophic systems have lost suspension feeders due to overharvesting, disease, and harmful algal blooms. In a …

Leaf Toughness And Cyanide Defense Of Passiflora Dioscoreifolia In Varied Light Habitats, August 2010, James Bellush
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Coevolution can lead to complex biological relationships between tropical plants and herbivores, as with Passiflora (Passifloraceae) vines and heliconiine butterflies (Nymphalidae: Heliconiiae). Constant herbivory from heliconiine butterflies has led to the development of cyanide-based defensive compounds by Passiflora, in addition to the more general defense of toughening leaves, found in all plants. To observe the effect of light availability on leaf toughness and cyanide content in Passiflora dioscoreifolia, leaves from twenty plants in sun and shade habitats were sampled in the forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica and tested for their leaf toughness and cyanide content. Plants in the sun habitat …

Feeding Corn Milling Co-Products To Forage Fed Cattle, 1st Edition, Aaron Stalker, Rick Rasby, Galen E. Erickson, Crystal Buckner, Terry J. Klopfenstein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Introduction
Beef calves from weaning until they enter feedlots, developing heifers, and beef cows are fed primarily forage diets. Especially in the winter, forages are low in protein and phosphorus and need to be supplemented. Corn milling co-products are excellent sources of both protein and phosphorus and fi t nicely into winter supplementation programs. Corn milling co-products are also an excellent source of energy and are particularly well suited to forage based diets.
Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite diff erent feed products. The dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), and the …

Emerging evidence suggests that increases in activated T cell populations in adipose tissue may contribute toward obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. The present study investigates three unanswered questions: 1) Do adipose-resident T cells (ARTs) from lean and obese mice have altered cytokine production in response to TCR ligation?; 2) Do the extralymphoid ARTs possess a unique TCR repertoire compared with lymphoid-resident T cells and whether obesity alters the TCR diversity in specific adipose depots?; and 3) Does short-term elimination of T cells in epididymal fat pad without disturbing the systemic T cell homeostasis regulate inflammation and insulin-action during obesity? We found that …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Protecting the groundwater resource in the Warri Deltaic Plain sand from the impact of anthropogenic contamination requires an understanding and knowledge of groundwater flow paths, transport processes and the source of contamination. This study was carried out to find out contaminant transport from solid domestic waste sites to the groundwater. The U.S. Geological Survey three-dimensional finite-difference code, MODFLOW, was used to simulate the groundwater flow. The flow pattern reveals predominantly downward flow, with major horizontal motion towards towns around Ekurede Urhobo and Ekurede Itsekiri in Warri. Simulation of advective contaminant transport using MODPATE1 for particle tracking indicates local movement of …

Morphology, ontogeny and the molecular phylogeny of Agolohymena aspidocauda nov. gen., nov. spec., a new freshwater tetrahymenid ciliate from Idaho, U.S.A, are described. The ontogeny and histophagous mode of nutrition are similar to those of Deltopylum rhabdoides Fauré-Fremiet and Mugard, 1946. The new genus is placed with Deltopylum in the resurrected family Deltopylidae Song & Wilbert, 1989. We emend the diagnostic features of the family to include division by polytomy, right and left somatic kineties extending into the preoral suture, crook-shaped or sigmoid adoral membranelles 1 and 2, markedly reduced adoral membranelle 3 and a tetrahymenid silverline pattern. The main …
