Effects Of Starvation Selection On Nutrient Allocation And Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Bryan Penalosa, Allen Gibbs Aug 2010

Effects Of Starvation Selection On Nutrient Allocation And Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Bryan Penalosa, Allen Gibbs

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The life cycle of holometabolous insects is distinctly divided into three life stages: the larval, pupal, and adult stages. During the larval stage, animals accumulate energy stores in the larval fat body to be later used in the pupal and adult stages. I determined how this accumulated energy is stored in adult Drosophila melanogaster that have been selected for resistance to starvation for >40 generations. I assayed carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and found that 0 day old starvation selected flies have almost four times as much lipid content, twice as much carbohydrate, and a fairly equal amount of protein versus …

Postpartum Smoking Relapse: Qualitative Research To Understand The Role Of The Social Environment, Stephanie Nguyen

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

While up to 45% of women quit smoking during pregnancy, nearly 80% return to smoking within a year after delivery. Current interventions to prevent this return have had limited success. The aim of this study was to use the Theory of Planned Behavior to understand the factors influencing intention to resume smoking postpartum, specifically focusing on the role of subjective norms, or the social environment. During the postpartum hospital stay, we conducted in-depth, individual interviews with 24 women who had quit smoking during pregnancy. Over 300 pages of transcripts were analyzed by all four investigators using qualitative methods to identify …

Local Food: Does It Matter What You Eat?, Brian Raison Aug 2010

Local Food: Does It Matter What You Eat?, Brian Raison

Journal of Youth Development

Everybody eats. Period. Some of us prefer hamburgers. Some like veggies. But what we eat is only the beginning. Increasingly, interest in where our foods are grown and processed has emerged. As numerous grass roots organizations proffer information on local foods, it becomes critical for research-based youth programs to also encourage study on this topic. This article introduces a new curriculum that aims to help students learn about what we eat, where it comes from, and how it impacts the environment. The main goal is to help participants understand the concept of local food systems, how they operate, and how …

Barley For Brewing: Characteristic Changes During Malting, Brewing And Applications Of Its By-Products, Mahesh Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Eimear Gallaghar

Articles

Barley is the basic raw material for brewing. Its chemical composition, brewing, and technological indices are highly determinative for the beer quality and the economical efficiency of the brewing process. Barley is rich in protein, carbohydrates, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins. The presence of non starch polysaccharides as mixed linkage (1-3),(1-4)-β-D-glucans and arabinoxylans together with the enzymes are responsible for barley modification. Malting is a complex process that involves many enzymes; important ones are α-amylase, β-amylase, α-glucosidase, and limit dextrinase. During the process of malting and brewing, the by-products left after separation of the wort are rich in protein, fibers, …

The Perilipin Homologue, Lipid Storage Droplet 2, Regulates Sleep Homeostasis And Prevents Learning Impairments Following Sleep Loss, Matthew S. Thimgan, Yasuko Suzuki, Laurent Seugnet, Laura Gottschalk, Paul J. Shaw Aug 2010

The Perilipin Homologue, Lipid Storage Droplet 2, Regulates Sleep Homeostasis And Prevents Learning Impairments Following Sleep Loss, Matthew S. Thimgan, Yasuko Suzuki, Laurent Seugnet, Laura Gottschalk, Paul J. Shaw

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Extended periods of waking result in physiological impairments in humans, rats, and flies. Sleep homeostasis, the increase in sleep observed following sleep loss, is believed to counter the negative effects of prolonged waking by restoring vital biological processes that are degraded during sleep deprivation. Sleep homeostasis, as with other behaviors, is influenced by both genes and environment. We report here that during periods of starvation, flies remain spontaneously awake but, in contrast to sleep deprivation, do not accrue any of the negative consequences of prolonged waking. Specifically, the homeostatic response and learning impairments that are a characteristic of sleep loss …

Improving Caloric Intake And Nutrition For Elderly Dementia Patients By Modifying The Environment, Tiffany Hobbs, Sheila Hutchens

Graduate Research Projects

Visual perception, difficulty distinguishing objects, judging distance and determining color or contrast are common problems contributing to weight loss and nutritional decline in dementia clients. Mealtime burdens and challenges for individuals with dementia can be minimized or eliminated by some simple, inexpensive alterations in the physical environment that can profoundly influence how patients feel, behave, and function; as well as ease frustration and promote more independent functioning. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effect of table setting contrast on residents’ weight, oral intake, arm circumference, and feeding behaviors during meals in an assisted living facility serving …

The multiple and diverse perspectives, skills, and experiences inherent in community–academic partnerships make them uniquely positioned to educate policy makers and advocate for health equity. Effective communication tools are critical to successfully engage in the policy-making process. Yet few resources emphasize the development and use of practical tools for translating community-based participatory research (CBPR) findings into action. The purpose of this article is to describe a CBPR process for developing and using a one-page summary, or “one-pager,” of research findings and their policy implications. This article draws on the experience of the Healthy Environments Partnership (HEP), a community–academic partnership in …

Environment-Induced Phenotypic Plasticity In The Teeth Of Hatchery And Wild Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Floridanus, Tamilselvi Selvaraj Aug 2010

Environment-Induced Phenotypic Plasticity In The Teeth Of Hatchery And Wild Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Floridanus, Tamilselvi Selvaraj

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Successful stock enhancement of hatchery-reared fish depends heavily on the release of individuals able to demonstrate strong survival skills. Overall survival of fishes is a reflection of a successful blend of physiology, anatomy, and behavior. With fishes being highly phenotypically plastic, the potential exists for all aspects of hatcheryreared fish to vary significantly from their wild counterparts while having potentially adverse effects on their survival after release. Previous analyses have demonstrated significant differences between the feeding behavior of hatchery-reared and wild caught largemouth bass (Micropterus floridanus) in the laboratory, as well as differences in the development of the …

The Impact Of Antioxidant Addition On Flavor Of Cheddar And Mozzarella Whey And Cheddar Whey Protein Concentrate, I. W. Liaw, H. Eshpari, P. S. Tong, M. A. Drake

Dairy Science

Lipid oxidation products are primary contributors to whey ingredient off-flavors. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of antioxidant addition in prevention of flavor deterioration of fluid whey and spray-dried whey protein. Cheddar and Mozzarella cheeses were manufactured in triplicate. Fresh whey was collected, pasteurized, and defatted by centrifugal separation. Subsequently, 0.05% (w/w) ascorbic acid or 0.5% (w/w) whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) were added to the pasteurized whey. A control with no antioxidant addition was also evaluated. Wheys were stored at 3 °C and evaluated after 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 d. In a subsequent experiment, …

Influence Of Financial And Policy Environments On The Business Strategy Of Biotechnology Companies In India, Sumesh Mohan Arora Aug 2010

Influence Of Financial And Policy Environments On The Business Strategy Of Biotechnology Companies In India, Sumesh Mohan Arora

Dissertations

The biotechnology industry thrives on innovation and new knowledge creation, but is also capital intensive with a complex regulatory environment (Hine and Kapeleris 2007). It is seen as a sunrise industry by the Indian government (Natesh and Bhan 2009). Current literature on the business strategy of Indian biotechnology companies and the influence from external factors is very limited. The objective of this research was to qualitatively test the applicability of the Miles and Snow (1978) theory of organizational behavior which describes four strategy choices: prospector, analyzer, defender and reactor, in the context of the Indian biotechnology sector. Research on Western …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari Aug 2010

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young people in Ghana who grow up in poverty and to families with little or no education endure limited early learning opportunities, underfunded educational systems, and more health and mental health problems compared to their peers from more privileged backgrounds. A significant body of literature addressing the relationship among risk, protection, resilience and academic achievement is based on youth populations in North America and Western Europe. Relatively little is known about the applicability of ecological and risk and resilience frameworks in non-Western countries. Consequently, educational outcomes of young people in Ghana are often characterized by similarities in low achievement, lack …

Plant Sterol And Stanol Substrate Specificity Of Pancreatic Cholesterol Esterase, Andrew W. Brown, Jiliang Hang, Patrick H. Dussault, Timothy P. Carr Aug 2010

Plant Sterol And Stanol Substrate Specificity Of Pancreatic Cholesterol Esterase, Andrew W. Brown, Jiliang Hang, Patrick H. Dussault, Timothy P. Carr

Patrick Dussault Publications

Consumption of plant sterols or stanols (collectively referred to as phytosterols) and their esters results in decreased lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, which is associated with decreased atherosclerotic risk. The mechanisms by which phytosterols impart their effects, however, are incompletely characterized. The objective of the present study is to determine if pancreatic cholesterol esterase (PCE; EC 3.1.1.13), the enzyme primarily responsible for cholesterol ester hydrolysis in the digestive tract, is capable of hydrolyzing various phytosterol esters and to compare the rates of sterol ester hydrolysis in vitro. We found that PCE hydrolyzes palmitate, oleate and stearate esters of cholesterol, stigmasterol, stigmastanol and …
