Student Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous opportunistic pathogen carried by humans. Staphylococcus intermedius is a zoonotic pathogen showing a potential to infect humans. Transfer of antibiotic resistance genes between bacteria accelerates the spread of antibiotic resistance. In this project, biochemical tests combined with PCR were employed to identify the colonization rates of S. aureus and S. intermedius in pet industry employees and the transfer of erythromycin rRNA methylase genes, ermA and ermC, between them. The colonization rates of S. aureus and S. intermedius were 24% and 2% respectively, which were low and indicates daily contact with animals may not facilitate the …

Role Of Sabp2 In Systemic Acquired Resistance Induced By Acibenzolar-S-Methyl In Plants., Diwaker Tripathi Aug 2010

Role Of Sabp2 In Systemic Acquired Resistance Induced By Acibenzolar-S-Methyl In Plants., Diwaker Tripathi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plants have evolved an efficient mechanism to defend themselves against pathogens. Many biotic and abiotic agents have been shown to induce defense mechanism in plants. Acibenzolar-S-Methyl (ASM) is a commercially available chemical inducer of local and systemic resistance (SAR) response in plants. ASM functioning at molecular level is mostly unclear. This research was designed to investigate the mechanism of ASM action in plants. It was hypothesized that SABP2, a plant protein, plays an important role in ASM-mediated defense signaling. Biochemical studies were performed to test the interaction between SABP2 and ASM. Transgenic SABP2-silenced tobacco plants were used to determine the …

"Knowing Where I Am At": The Experience Of Self-Monitoring Blood Glucose For People With Non-Insulin-Requiring Type 2 Diabetes., Dana Elisabeth Brackney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eleven participants living with non-insulin-requiring Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) discussed their self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) experience. All had been recently diagnosed (< 2 years) and treated for diabetes with a self-regulating SMBG guideline for primary care practice. Their digitally-recorded interviews and photographed logbooks were analyzed thematically and interpreted through the lens of numeracy literature to answer 2 questions: 1. What is the meaning of SMBG among people with non-insulinrequiring T2DM? 2. How do people with non-insulin-requiring T2DM perceive the function of SMBG in diabetes self-management? The meanings of SMBG were patient competence, "It is easy, just a little pin prick"; patient control, "I can control it. It doesn't control me"; and patient security, "It is not that way anymore." Three periods of lived time were observed: Diagnosis "The numbers say I have diabetes"; "I just can't figure out why it does that"; and Routine "I make my numbers." Prominent numeracy functions emerged by time period. During Diagnosis primary numeracy functions included comparing SMBG results to target values. Participants expressed this experience as, "I am some kind of O.K." During applied numeracy functions included taking medication correctly. SMBG readings were experienced as a clue to the diabetes mystery, sometimes confusing the participants, "I just don't …

Synthesis Of A Water Soluble Resveratrol Derivative As A Potential Anti-Cancer Drug., Augustine Essel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on development of water soluble anti-cancer drugs is one of the great challenges of modern medicinal chemistry. Resveratrol (Res) is one of the many phytoalexins producing stilbenoids present in several medicinal plants, grape skin, peanuts, and red wine. It has been found to exhibit anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties. Water solubility and bioavailability are some of the setbacks of this interesting compound. In view of this, effort has been made to synthesize amino acid derivative of resveratrol to improve its bioavailability and solubility in water. Methyl 4-{-[(1E)-2-(3, 5-dihydroxyphenyl)-ethenyl] - phenoxy} butyrate (7), a novel ester intermediate, has been synthesized …

Potential Biases In Estimating The Rate Parameter Of Sigmoid Growth Functions, Robert Ricklefs, Suzanne Austin, Tara Robinson, W. Robinson

Biology Department Faculty Works

1. We compare biases in estimates of the rate constant of the logistic and Gompertz functions applied to avian growth using three methods of parameter estimation. The methods differ in how the asymptote is determined, and consist of either floating asymptotes estimated from the full data (floating A) or data truncated at 70% of the adult mass (70%A), or fixing the asymptote at the adult mass (fixed A).2. First, using data for two passerine species exhibiting different growth patterns, we truncated mass measurements at different ages to explore how each method of growth rate estimation responded to simulated differences in …

Origin Of The Genus Homo, Holly M. Dunsworth Aug 2010

Origin Of The Genus Homo, Holly M. Dunsworth

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The origin of the genus Homo in Africa signals the beginning of the shift from increasingly bipedal apes to primitive, large-brained, stone tool-making, meat-eaters that traveled far and wide. This early part of the human genus is represented by three species: Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, and Homo erectus. H. habilis is known for retaining primitive features that link it to australopiths and for being the first stone tool makers. Little is known about H. rudolfensis except that it had a relatively large brain and large teeth compared to H. habilis and that it overlapped in time and space with other …

Primary Human Mammary Epithelial Cells Endocytose Hiv-1 And Facilitate Viral Infection Of Cd4+ T Lymphocytes, Stephanie M. Dorosko, Ruth I. Connor

Dartmouth Scholarship

The contribution of mammary epithelial cells (MEC) to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in breast milk remains largely unknown. While breast milk contains CD4(+) cells throughout the breast-feeding period, it is not known whether MEC directly support HIV-1 infection or facilitate infection of CD4(+) cells in the breast compartment. This study evaluated primary human MEC for direct infection with HIV-1 and for indirect transfer of infection to CD4(+) target cells. Primary human MEC were isolated and assessed for expression of HIV-1 receptors. MEC were exposed to CCR5-, CXCR4- and dual-tropic strains of HIV-1 and evaluated for viral reverse transcription …

The Anatomy Of Conflict, Lahcen Haddad Phd, Academic Director

Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium

The need for peace in today’s world has become an existential issue for humanity. Without a sense of shared earth and its resources and a shared humanity governed by universal and local values, the human race seems to be more threatened with a crippling propensity for self-destruction than ever before. Some theories, systems of thought even religious currents like Marxism, fascism, jihadi Islam, crusading Christianity, expansionist Zionism think that conflict is fundamental to History inasmuch as it allows for justification of the self through the use of power. For Marxism, struggle as conflict between classes is the engine that drives …
