Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Heart failure is a leading cause of death in the United States, with around 5 million Americans currently suffering from congestive heart failure. The WANDA B. wireless health technology leverages sensor technology and wireless communication to monitor heart failure patient activity and to provide tailored guidance. Patients who have cardiovascular system disorders can measure their weight, blood pressure, activity levels, and other vital signs in a real-time automated fashion. The system was developed in conjunction with the UCLA Nursing School and the UCLA Wireless Health Institute for use on actual patients. It is currently in use with real patients in …

Desain penelitian adalah before and after, dengan metoda pengumpulan data …

Dentoskeletal And Soft Tissue Treatment Effects Of Two Different Methods For Treating Class Ii Malocclusions., Madhur Upadhyay
Dentoskeletal And Soft Tissue Treatment Effects Of Two Different Methods For Treating Class Ii Malocclusions., Madhur Upadhyay
Master's Theses
Objectives: Moderate to severe Class II malocclusions can not only cause esthetic and functional problems but can also lead to psychological problems of varying intensity depending on the amount of anterior-posterior discrepancy and its interaction with the related soft tissue structures. Although there are several methods of treating such malocclusions (extractions, distalization, functional appliances etc), the final goal is always to provide acceptable esthetics and stability. The purpose of this clinical-cephalometric study was to examine the dentoskeletal and soft tissue treatment effects of maxillary anterior teeth retraction with mini-implant (MI) anchorage in young adults having Class II Division I malocclusion undergoing extraction …

Neuro-Endocrine Basis For Altered Plasma Glucose Homeostasis In The Fragile X Mouse, Abdeslem El Idrissi, Xin Yan, Francoise Sidime, William L’Amoreaux
Publications and Research
Background The fragile X mouse model shows an increase in seizure susceptibility, indicating an involvement of the GABAergic system via an alteration in cellular excitability. In the brain, we have previously described a reduction in GABAA receptor expression as a likely basis for this susceptibility. In the brains of fragile X mice, this reduction in receptor expression culminates with a concomitant increase in the expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the enzyme responsible for GABA synthesis. Further, voltage-sensitive calcium channel expression is reduced in the pancreas of the fragile X mouse. Since there are considerable similarities in the GABAergic system …

Intermountain And The Growing Importance Of Administrative Law In Tax Law, Steve R. Johnson
Scholarly Publications
On September 29, 2009, Treasury issued regulations retroactively extending the six-year limitations period for income tax deficiencies resulting from basis overstatements. In its May 6 Intermountain decision, the Tax Court unanimously invalidated those regulations, but on divided rationales. The government has appealed.
lntermountain is a must-read for tax academics and practitioners. It is among the richest decisions on the procedural and substantive validity of tax regulations. Moreover, the opinions in the case, subsequent cases on the issue, .and commentary on these opinions and cases present genuine opportunity for improvement of the law.
This report has five sections. Section I sketches …

Demographics And Terrestrial Ecology Of An Amphibian Community In A Large Ephemeral Pond In The Ozark Mountains, Corey Lynn Shaffer
Demographics And Terrestrial Ecology Of An Amphibian Community In A Large Ephemeral Pond In The Ozark Mountains, Corey Lynn Shaffer
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the aquatic and terrestrial ecology of an amphibian community at an ephemeral pond in the Ozark Mountains. Literature on amphibian community assemblage is reviewed, and reasons for species abundance at the pond (hydrology, interspecific interactions, and terrestrial habitat requirements) are inferred. Sixteen species were observed using Stout Pond. Emigration orientation, distance of migration, and terrestrial macrohabitat use are assessed for some species. Emigration was concentrated in the south and southwest toward northeastern hillsides. Species avoided pine forests in the southeast and younger forests in the northwest. On average, species migrated from 80-200 m to reach terrestrial home …

Building Self-Esteem Of Female Youth In Group Counseling: A Review Of Literature And Practice, Maura Lynn Rouse
Building Self-Esteem Of Female Youth In Group Counseling: A Review Of Literature And Practice, Maura Lynn Rouse
Graduate Journal of Counseling Psychology
This paper reviews current research and practice of building self-esteem of female youth through group counseling. Young girls today face challenges that previous generations of females have never before encountered (Piper, 1994, p.12), which can have severe life effects. Emerging research indicates that although self-esteem is a difficult concept to measure, group counseling is an effective method for improving female youth’s self-esteem and related constructs (O’Dea & Abraham, 1999; Cappel, 1995). Groups focusing on diverse populations and areas for future research are also discussed.

Objectives—Little is known about blood cholesterol (blood-C) levels under conditions of infection and limited diet. This study examines blood-C and markers of infection and inflammation in the Tsimane of the Bolivian Amazon, indigenous forager farmers living in conditions that model preindustrial European populations by their short life expectancy, high load of infections and inflammation, and limited diets.
Methods—We use multivariate models to determine the relationships between lipid levels and markers of infection and inflammation. Adult Tsimane (N = 418, age 20–84) were characterized for blood lipids, cells, and inflammatory markers in relation to individual loads of parasites and …
