Interactions Of Carbon Nanotubes With Human Lung Epithelial Cells In Vitro, Assessed By Raman Spectroscopy, Peter Knief Nov 2010

Interactions Of Carbon Nanotubes With Human Lung Epithelial Cells In Vitro, Assessed By Raman Spectroscopy, Peter Knief

Doctoral

Current methods for the evaluation of cellular interactions with nanoparticles are non-specific, relatively slow and invasive to the cell. Raman spectroscopy is a non invasive technique whose potential in the biosciences has already been demonstrated and has been used in the investigation of cell interactions with various external agents. The main focus of this study is to employ Raman spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of A549 human lung cells with single walled carbon nanotubes. · Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest not only for their outstanding physical and electronic properties, promising a potentially vast number of applications, but also for …

Solar Radiation Damage To Human Skin Mitochondria, Luciene Zanchetta Nov 2010

Solar Radiation Damage To Human Skin Mitochondria, Luciene Zanchetta

Doctoral

The central objective of this study was to assess solar radiation-induced changes in cellular function, mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA to further investigate the role of these energy-dedicated and metabolically essential organelles in the response to the main environmental stressor associated with skin cancer initiation. An in vitro approach was chosen employing the human malignant melanoma (A375) and human amelanotic melanoma (C32) cells and the human spontaneously immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT). A Q-Sun Solar Simulator was used to expose cells to low-level simulated solar radiation (SSR) as it provides a mimic of solar radiation that is environmentally relevant in the UV …

Time, Temperature And Species Interactions In A Duckweed–Herbivore Mesocosm, Ian Waterman Nov 2010

Time, Temperature And Species Interactions In A Duckweed–Herbivore Mesocosm, Ian Waterman

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Species interactions within a community are impacted by a variety of abiotic factors. Temperature is known to alter population dynamics such that direct and indirect interactions between populations within a community are affected. Here I investigate the effect of temperature change on species interactions within a duckweed-herbivore mesocosm. Multiple communities were constructed, from a single population of duckweed, to two populations of duckweed consumed by aphids. In the one-predator two-prey web we predicted mutually positive indirect effects between duckweed populations during the first generation of growth. As aphid populations respond numerically to more abundant prey, mutually negative and asymmetric indirect …

Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians: Is There Still A Disconnect Between Professional Education And Professional Responsibilities, Sarah Fabian, Theresa Westbrock Nov 2010

Proficiencies For Instruction Librarians: Is There Still A Disconnect Between Professional Education And Professional Responsibilities, Sarah Fabian, Theresa Westbrock

Faculty Scholarship - University Library

In 1993, based on the proficiencies for bibliographic instruction librarians (1986), Diana Shonrock and Craig Mulder investigated if and where librarians were acquiring these proficiencies. In 2007, ACRL approved a revised set of proficiencies: Proficiencies for Instruction Librarians and Coordinators. The authors recreated the 1993 study, using the revised set of proficiencies. Librarians find the new set of proficiencies to be more relevant to their jobs than the older set of proficiencies; however, they are still most likely to acquire the proficiencies primarily outside their library school education.

Do Foreign Institutions Improve Stock Liquity?, Chi Shen Wei Nov 2010

Do Foreign Institutions Improve Stock Liquity?, Chi Shen Wei

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines whether capital flows by foreign institutions improve liquidity in domestic markets. I find that stocks with increased foreign institutional ownership subsequently experience higher liquidity. However, it is difficult to interpret this evidence as a causal relation because institutions tend to self-select into more liquid stocks. To solve this problem, I exploit the 2003 US dividend tax cut as a natural experiment. The results from a 2SLS (IV) regression confirm that liquidity improved more in dividend-paying stocks located in US tax-treaty countries compared to similar stocks located in non-treaty countries. These patterns are consistent with the notion that …

Shyness And Online Social Networking Services, Levi Baker, Debra L. Oswald Nov 2010

Shyness And Online Social Networking Services, Levi Baker, Debra L. Oswald

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Online social networking services are Internet websites that allow individuals to learn about and communicate with others. This study investigated the association between use of these websites and friendship quality for individuals varying in shyness. Participants (N = 241) completed questionnaires assessing their use of Facebook, an online social networking service, shyness, perceived available social support, loneliness, and friendship quality. Results indicated an interaction between shyness and Facebook usage, such that individuals high in shyness (when compared to less shy individuals) reported stronger associations between Facebook use and friendship quality. Facebook use, however, was unrelated to loneliness among highly shy …

The Messy Reality Of Organised Crime Research, Mark Findlay, Nafis Hanif Nov 2010

The Messy Reality Of Organised Crime Research, Mark Findlay, Nafis Hanif

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The analysis starts out by confronting and exposing the ideological motivations for dualism in conventional organised crime research. In order to suggest a cognitive pathway beyond this restrictive normative frame, it is essential to appreciate its potency and resilience. Law enforcement language buoyed up by popular culture representations of gangs, syndicates and crime bosses have become the accepted starting point for much research in the field. Research from this perspective, we suggest, plays its own part in organised crime mystification and as such retards the critical utility of enterprise theory. Next the paper shows how distracted and distorted theorising infects …

Introduction: Culture, Economy, Policy: Trends And Developments, Lily Kong Nov 2010

Introduction: Culture, Economy, Policy: Trends And Developments, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The important nexus between culture and economy is by no means a recent development nor a novel inclusion on the social science agenda. As Harvey pointed out in his foreword to Zukin's (1988)Loft Living, the artist, as one `representative' of the cultural class, has always shared a position in the market system, whether as artisans or as “cultural producers working to the command of hegemonic class interest”. In the last two to three decades, in the US and more lately, in western Europe, cultural activities have become increasingly significant in the economic regeneration strategies in many cities. Geographers, however, have …

Anticancer And Antifungal Activity Of Copper(Ii) Complexes Of Quinolin-2(1h)-One-Derived Schiff Bases, Bernadette S. Creaven, Brian Duff, Denise A. Egan, Kevin Kavanagh, Georgina Rosair, Venkat Reddy Thangella, Maureen Walsh Nov 2010

Anticancer And Antifungal Activity Of Copper(Ii) Complexes Of Quinolin-2(1h)-One-Derived Schiff Bases, Bernadette S. Creaven, Brian Duff, Denise A. Egan, Kevin Kavanagh, Georgina Rosair, Venkat Reddy Thangella, Maureen Walsh

Articles

The condensation of substituted aromatic aldehydes with 7-amino-4-methyl-quinolin-2(1H)-one (1) has lead to the isolation of quinolin-2(1H)-one derived Schiff bases (2–14). The copper(II) complexes (2a–14a) of the ligands were also prepared, and together with their corresponding free ligands were fully characterised by elemental analyses, spectral methods (IR, 1H and 13C NMR, AAS, UV–Vis), magnetic and conductance measurements. The bidentate ligands coordinated to the copper(II) ion through the deprotonated phenolic oxygen and the azomethine nitrogen of the ligands in almost all cases. X-ray crystal structures of two of the complexes, 5a and 8a, confirmed the bidentate …

A Similarity Matrix For Irish Traditional Dance Music, Padraic Lavin Nov 2010

A Similarity Matrix For Irish Traditional Dance Music, Padraic Lavin

Dissertations

It is estimated that there are between seven and ten thousand Irish traditional dance tunes in existence. As Irish musicians travelled the world they carried their repertoire in their memories and rarely recorded these pieces in writing. When the music was passed down from generation to generation by ear the names of these pieces of music and the melodies themselves were forgotten or changed over time. This has led to problems for musicians and archivists when identifying the names of traditional Irish tunes.

Almost all of this music is now available in ABC notation from online collections. An ABC file …

The Doppelgänger Tale And The Masquerade Of Race: The Enduring Influence Of Dumas` Iron Mask And Twain`S Switched Heroes, Virginia Payne Dow Nov 2010

The Doppelgänger Tale And The Masquerade Of Race: The Enduring Influence Of Dumas` Iron Mask And Twain`S Switched Heroes, Virginia Payne Dow

Masters Theses

Although separated by the Atlantic Ocean, nineteenth-century authors Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) and then Mark Twain (1835-1910) separately created narratives involving the doppelganger motif which both challenged the accepted social ideals and spawned a plethora of imitations. These tales of switched identities served to critique social stratification and racial discrimination.

Given the current influx of interest in the doppelganger paradigm within the media, and particularly in light of rising cultural studies involving race, class, and social stratification, the main novels of this study--Dumas' The Man in the Iron Mask and Georges, and Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson--warrant ever-increasing interest due to their discourse …

Assessing The Spillover Effects Of Fdi To The Philippines, Fernando T. Aldaba, Rafaelita M. Aldaba Nov 2010

Assessing The Spillover Effects Of Fdi To The Philippines, Fernando T. Aldaba, Rafaelita M. Aldaba

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The experience of the Philippines shows that FDI spillover effects are not automatically generated. Opening up the economy to FDI has contributed to the country’s exports of high-technology products and overall economic growth. However, the spillover effects of FDI to domestic firms have remained limited due to the domestic firms’ weak competitiveness and inability to absorb the technology or knowledge being transferred. The government needs to adopt a more comprehensive approach that would combine industrial policy to improve and develop domestic parts and supplier firms with measures to create an environment conducive to the creation and expansion of FDI-related spillovers …

Virulence Of An Emerging Respiratory Pathogen, Genus Pandoraea, In Vivo And Its Interactions With Lung Epithelial Cells, Gillian Herbert, Anne Costello, Lydia Fabunmi, Kirsten Schaffer, Kevin Kavanagh, Emma M. Caraher, Máire Callaghan, Siobhan Mcclean

Articles

Pandoraea species have emerged as opportunistic pathogens among cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF patients. Pandoraea pulmonicola is the predominant Pandoraea species among Irish CF patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the pathogenicity and potential mechanisms of virulence of Irish P. pulmonicola isolates and strains from other Pandoraea species. Three patients from whom the P. pulmonicola isolates were isolated have since died. The in vivo virulence of these and other Pandoraea strains was examined by determining the ability to kill Galleria mellonella larvae. The P. pulmonicola strains generally were the most virulent of the species tested, with three …
