The Impact Of Social Media On Software Engineering Practices And Tools, Margaret-Anne Storey, Christoph Treude, Arie Van Deursen, Li-Te Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today's generation of software developers frequently make use of social media, either as an adjunct or integrated into a wide range of tools ranging from code editors and issue trackers, to IDEs and web-based portals. The role of social media usage in software engineering is not well understood, and yet the use of these mechanisms influences software development practices. In this position paper, we advocate for research that strives to understand the benefits, risks and limitations of using social media in software development at the team, project and community levels. Guided by the implications of current tools and social media …

Efficient Mining Of Multiple Partial Near-Duplicate Alignments By Temporal Network, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua Nov 2010

Efficient Mining Of Multiple Partial Near-Duplicate Alignments By Temporal Network, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers the mining and localization of near-duplicate segments at arbitrary positions of partial near-duplicate videos in a corpus. Temporal network is proposed to model the visual-temporal consistency between video sequence by embedding temporal constraints as directed edges in the network. Partial alignment is then achieved through network flow programming. To handle multiple alignments, we consider two properties of network structure: conciseness and divisibility, to ensure that the mining is efficient and effective. Frame-level matching is further integrated in the temporal network for alignment verification. This results in an iterative alignment-verification procedure to fine tune the localization of near-duplicate …

Standardization Of Standard-Form Contracts: Competition And Contract Implications, Mark R. Patterson Nov 2010

Standardization Of Standard-Form Contracts: Competition And Contract Implications, Mark R. Patterson

William & Mary Law Review

Standard-form contracts are a common feature of commercial relationships because they offer the advantage of lower transaction costs. This advantage of standard contracts is increased when there is a second layer of standardization under which multiple firms agree on a standard contract. Trade associations and similar entities often effect standardization of this kind through collective agreement on a standard contract, sometimes under the aegis of state actors. Multifirm contract standardization can provide not only the usual transaction-cost advantages of standard-form contracts, but also increased competition among firms, because a standard contract makes comparison among firms’ offerings easier. But standardization among …

In July of 2010, I began an internship at the Arts Council of New Orleans (Appendix 1). Working within the Council's Marketing Department, I focused on developing the new Arts Council website, Artsneworleans.org. The Arts Council of New Orleans is a private, non-profit organization designated as the City's official arts agency and serves as one of nine regional distributing agencies for state arts funds. The Arts Council administers available municipal arts grants and the Percent For Art program for the City of New Orleans. Its partnership with the City of New Orleans, community groups, local, state, and national governmental agencies, …

Autonomous Robot Patrolling Of A Sparsely Populated Unknown Environment, Patrick Larocque Nov 2010

Autonomous Robot Patrolling Of A Sparsely Populated Unknown Environment, Patrick Larocque

Theses

The increasing availability and affordability of autonomous robots has expanded their uses for many new applications, such as exploration, surveillance and threat containment. Most research considers a team of a large number of robots that contain global information. This work explores distributed and low overhead algorithms for patrolling and threat containment within a region sparsely populated with few robots. The robots patrol the area without the global knowledge of the region, but each is equipped with an omni-directional range finder and a positioning system for keeping track of its location and metering distance and directions of events. This study presents …

Characterization Of Two-Phase Flow In A Transparent Pem Fuel Cell Using Simultaneous Anode And Cathode Visualization And Digital Image Processing, Jacqueline Sergi Nov 2010

Characterization Of Two-Phase Flow In A Transparent Pem Fuel Cell Using Simultaneous Anode And Cathode Visualization And Digital Image Processing, Jacqueline Sergi

Theses

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have emerged as a potential alternative to internal combustion engines in order to curb dependency on fossil fuels and reduce harmful CO2 emissions. Water management has been identified as a key research area for the advancement of PEM fuel cell technology, especially as it affects the purge protocol prior to cell shutdown. The presence of water in the cell is necessary to sustain membrane hydration, but the accumulation of excess liquid water, referred to as flooding, can lead to increased mass transport losses and reductions in performance and durability. In this work, a …

Effects Of Structured Roughness On Fluid Flow At The Microscale Level, Rebecca Noelani Wagner Nov 2010

Effects Of Structured Roughness On Fluid Flow At The Microscale Level, Rebecca Noelani Wagner

Theses

There are no theoretical differences between microscale and macroscale flows for incompressible liquids. Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in microchannels, however, are known to deviate from conventional macroscale theory in both the laminar and turbulent regimes. As the hydraulic diameter of a channel decreases, the effects of inherent surface roughness within the channel becomes more apparent, causing an increase in frictional losses and early transition to turbulence, as well as unpredictable heat transfer performance. Though many have experimentally, analytically, and numerically established that such deviations occur, the hypotheses attempting to characterize the deviations are sometimes contradictory and frequently employ …

How Does Facebook Browsing Affect Self-Awareness And Social Well-Being: The Role Of Narcissism, Lin Qiu, Han Lin, Angela K. Y. Leung Nov 2010

How Does Facebook Browsing Affect Self-Awareness And Social Well-Being: The Role Of Narcissism, Lin Qiu, Han Lin, Angela K. Y. Leung

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social networking sites such as Facebook have become extremely popular recently. In this research, we studied how Facebook browsing affects self-awareness and social well-being. Our results show that after Facebook browsing, individuals high in narcissism raised their public self-awareness while those low in narcissism reduced their public self-awareness. We also found that individuals low in narcissism perceived their friends' lives to be better than their own and consequently experienced negative social well-being and emotion. However, this effect did not occur for individuals high in narcissism.

Characterization And Development Of A Stroke-Induced Model Of Acquired Epilepsy In Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures: Role Of The Cannabinoid Cb1 Receptors In Modulation Of Neuronal Excitation And Inhibition, Julie Ziobro Nov 2010

Characterization And Development Of A Stroke-Induced Model Of Acquired Epilepsy In Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures: Role Of The Cannabinoid Cb1 Receptors In Modulation Of Neuronal Excitation And Inhibition, Julie Ziobro

Theses and Dissertations

Stroke is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in persons 35 and older. The massive increase in extracellular glutamate during stroke causes a cascade of intracellular events that can lead to cell death or the molecular changes that initiate the development of epilepsy. In addition, many studies point to a modulatory role of the endocannabinoid system in controlling seizures. Animal models of stroke induced acquired epilepsy have been difficult to develop. Therefore, this dissertation was initiated to develop an organotypic hippocampal slice culture model of acquired epilepsy and examine the changes in distribution and function of the endogenous CB1 …

Attracting The Best And The Brightest: A Critique Of The Current U.S. Immigration System, Chris Gafner, Stephen W. Yale-Loehr Nov 2010

Attracting The Best And The Brightest: A Critique Of The Current U.S. Immigration System, Chris Gafner, Stephen W. Yale-Loehr

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The United States has long benefited as a leader in attracting the "best and brightest" immigrants. However, the world has changed since the U.S. immigration system's last major modification in 1990. The United States is no longer the primary destination for many talented immigrants. Many other nations have enacted immigration systems meant to attract the best and brightest immigrants. These immigration systems are often point- based and allow potential immigrants to quickly determine eligibility. By comparison, the U.S. immigration system is slow and complicated. Many now question the United States' ability to attract talented immigrants. This Article first examines how …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate quantitative functional imaging using image-guided near-infrared spectroscopy (IG-NIRS) implemented with the boundary element method (BEM) for reconstructing 3-D optical property estimates in breast tissue in vivo. A multimodality MRI-NIR system was used to collect measurements of light reflectance from breast tissue. The BEM was used to model light propagation in 3-D based only on surface discretization in order to reconstruct quantitative values of total hemoglobin (HbT), oxygen saturation, water, and scatter. The technique was validated in experimental measurements from heterogeneous breast-shaped phantoms with known values and applied to a total of seven subjects comprising six healthy individuals …

Changing The Sentence Without Hiding The Truth: Judicial Sentence Modification As A Promising Method Of Early Release, Cecelia Klingele Nov 2010

Changing The Sentence Without Hiding The Truth: Judicial Sentence Modification As A Promising Method Of Early Release, Cecelia Klingele

William & Mary Law Review

Last year, as the State of California struggled with a $42 billion budget deficit, its financial inability to correct constitutionally deficient prison conditions led a federal court to order the release of 40,000 state prisoners. In Oregon, Michigan, Connecticut, Vermont, and Delaware, spending on corrections now exceeds spending on higher education. Across the nation, more than one of every one hundred Americans is behind bars. When the financial crisis of 2008 dealt its blow, state correctional budgets were already nearing a breaking point. Now, in the wake of unprecedented budget shortfalls, state governments have been forced to confront a difficult …

First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson Nov 2010

First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson

William & Mary Law Review

We are at a crossroads with respect to the underdeveloped equitable defense of copyright misuse. The defense may go the way of its sibling, antitrust-based patent misuse, which seems to be in a state of inevitable decline. Or—if judges accept the proposal of this Article—courts could reinvigorate the copyright misuse defense to better protect First Amendment speech that is guaranteed by statute, but that is often chilled by copyright holders misusing their copyrights to control others’ speech. The Copyright Act serves First Amendment interests by encouraging authors to create works. But copyright law can also discourage the creation of new …
