New Music Audiences: The Generative Impulse, David Tham Nov 2010

New Music Audiences: The Generative Impulse, David Tham

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper looks at how the net neutrality debate relates to the music recording industry and considers how new media audiences consume music as social experience and with generative impulse. As the Internet appears to force the music recording industry to re-evaluate its function and change its approach to distributing music and making money, music artistes seem to no longer need to rely on ‘record deals’ to launch or build a music career; and music audiences no longer have to rely on Top-40 radio to be told what is popular listening. This phenomenon has serious implications for new and emerging …

Transforming Grief: The Use Of Images During Bereavement In Mexico And The United States, Rebecca M. Reséndiz Rodriguez Nov 2010

Transforming Grief: The Use Of Images During Bereavement In Mexico And The United States, Rebecca M. Reséndiz Rodriguez

School of Medicine Publications

According to the literature, bereavement photography was an important part of funeral rituals in many countries, including Mexicoand the United States. By the early to mid- 20th century, the custom appeared to have fallen out of favor in both countries except in the case of neonatal bereavement photography, at least in theUnited States. By comparing participants from 2 distinct cultures - theUnited States andMexico - I hope to show that bereavement photography can still be a useful tool during grieving. Anxiety and depression related to the topic of death will be evaluated for differences or similarities between the 2 …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Many mutations confer one or more toxic function(s) on copper/zinc superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) that impair motor neuron viability and cause familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS). Using a conformation-specific antibody that detects misfolded SOD1 (C4F6), we found that oxidized wild-type SOD1 and mutant SOD1 share a conformational epitope that is not present in normal wild-type SOD1. In a subset of human sporadic ALS (SALS) cases, motor neurons in the lumbosacral spinal cord were markedly C4F6 immunoreactive, indicating that an aberrant wild-type SOD1 species was present. Recombinant, oxidized wild-type SOD1 and wild-type SOD1 immunopurified from SALS tissues inhibited kinesin-based fast axonal …

From Then Until Now, Nick Marshall Nov 2010

From Then Until Now, Nick Marshall

Theses

The photograph may create a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past, but that past is not an authentic one. It is a past that has been mediated through a lens and by a photographer who is already mediated by cultural and societal norms and beliefs. Yet this past is both familiar and foreign at the same time. From Then Until Now is a series of visual investigations and physical manipulations of the photograph--particularly the snapshot. I utilize the photograph for its dual role as an objective index and as an aid for the subjective nature of memories. In …

The Pragmatic Incrementalism Of Common Law Intellectual Property, Shyamkrishna Balganesh Nov 2010

The Pragmatic Incrementalism Of Common Law Intellectual Property, Shyamkrishna Balganesh

Vanderbilt Law Review

Intellectual property is today thought to be principally of statutory origin. Discussions of the subject invariably revolve around a close scrutiny of the federal statutes involved. Indeed, the frequency with which Congress amends the patent and copyright statutes seems to leave little doubt that it alone determines intellectual property's precise content and coverage.' Nevertheless, there exists a rather robust body of state law that is almost entirely the creation of state courts and is directed at creating entitlements in information, ideas, expression, goodwill, one's image, and other related intangibles. These rights regimes are in turn collectively referred to as "common …

Form Perception: An Interactive Guide To The Gestalt Principles, Hend Alawadhi Nov 2010

Form Perception: An Interactive Guide To The Gestalt Principles, Hend Alawadhi

Theses

The term Gestalt literally means "form" in German. In the early 20th century, the Gestalt Principles of Perception were developed by German psychologists from the Berlin School. These principles describe the different ways the human mind organizes visual elements into groups or unified wholes. The definition of Gestalt in relation to these principles is "unified whole." This thesis is an endeavor to examine the five major principles of Gestalt perception through the use of short animations and illustrated examples, presented in a website. It will also allow the user to test the knowledge provided through a short multiple-choice quiz and …

Framework For Optimizing Intelligence Collection Requirements, Khiem Tong Nov 2010

Framework For Optimizing Intelligence Collection Requirements, Khiem Tong

Theses

In the military, typical mission execution goes through cycles of intelligence collection and action planning phases. For complex operations where many parameters affect the outcomes of the mission, several steps may be taken for intelligence collection before the optimal Course of Action is actually carried out. Human analytics suggests the steps of: (1) anticipating plausible futures, (2) determining information requirements, and (3) optimize the choice of feasible and cost-effective intelligence requirements. This work formalizes this process by developing a decision support tool to determine information requirements needed to differentiate critical plausible futures, and formulating a mixed integer programming problem to …

A Look Into The Future Of Wireless Mobile Communication Technologies, Jisun Kim, Tugrul Unsal Daim, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The number of wireless mobile communication service subscribers has reached 4.6 billion worldwide in 2009, and mobile revenues are expected to be over $1 trillion around 2012 according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) (ITU, 2010). A significant number of studies have been done to forecast the growing market and evaluate the new generation technology, the Beyond 3 Generation (B3G). However, there is no study forecasting when any of these new technologies will be commercialized. This paper presents a technical framework for forecasting the commercialization timeline of B3G technologies and provides insight on technology trajectories from 1G to 4G. The …

Aminoglycoside Resistance Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms Modulated By Extracellular Polysaccharide, Wajiha Khan, Steve P. Bernier, Sherry L. Kuchma, John H. Hammond, Fariha Hasan, George A. O'Toole Nov 2010

Aminoglycoside Resistance Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms Modulated By Extracellular Polysaccharide, Wajiha Khan, Steve P. Bernier, Sherry L. Kuchma, John H. Hammond, Fariha Hasan, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that produces sessile communities known as biofilms that are highly resistant to antibiotic treatment. Limited information is available on the exact role of various components of the matrix in biofilm-associated antibiotic resistance. Here we show that the presence of extracellular polysaccharide reduced the extent of biofilm-associated antibiotic resistance for one class of antibiotics. Minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) for planktonic and biofilm cells of P. aeruginosa PA14 was measured using a 96 well microtiter plate assay. The MBC of biofilm-grown ΔpelA mutant, which does not produce the Pel polysaccharide, was 4-fold higher for tobramycin and …

Automated Classification Of Breast Pathology Using Local Measures Of Broadband Reflectance, Ashley M. Laughney, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Pilar Beatriz Garcia-Allende, Olga M. Conde, Wendy A. Wells, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue Nov 2010

Automated Classification Of Breast Pathology Using Local Measures Of Broadband Reflectance, Ashley M. Laughney, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Pilar Beatriz Garcia-Allende, Olga M. Conde, Wendy A. Wells, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate that morphological features pertinent to a tissue's pathology may be ascertained from localized measures of broadband reflectance, with a mesoscopic resolution (100-μm lateral spot size) that permits scanning of an entire margin for residual disease. The technical aspects and optimization of a k-nearest neighbor classifier for automated diagnosis of pathologies are presented, and its efficacy is validated in 29 breast tissue specimens. When discriminating between benign and malignant pathologies, a sensitivity and specificity of 91 and 77% was achieved. Furthermore, detailed subtissue-type analysis was performed to consider how diverse pathologies influence scattering response and overall classification efficacy. The …

Microbial Influences On Karst Dissolution: The Geochemical Perspective, With A Chapter On Assessment Of The Spreadsheets Across The Curriculum Project, Dorien Kymberly Mcgee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microbes are prevalent in geologic settings and a growing body of research suggests the roles they play in geologic processes may be more important than previously thought, and therefore underestimated. This dissertation addresses the influence of microbes on the dissolution of limestone in karst settings by analyzing the stable carbon isotopes and geochemistry of air and waters from three unique cave and karst settings: West-Central Florida, the Everglades (southern Florida) and The Bahamas. In Florida, these parameters as well as air/water temperature, rainfall, and water-level fluctuations were monitored for 22 and 10 months. In the Bahamas, geochemical data were collected …

Contextualizing Obesity Among Latino Farmworkers: A Critical Analysis Of Structural And Cultural Processes Affecting Farmworker Health And Nutrition In Central Florida, Melissa H. Johnson Nov 2010

Contextualizing Obesity Among Latino Farmworkers: A Critical Analysis Of Structural And Cultural Processes Affecting Farmworker Health And Nutrition In Central Florida, Melissa H. Johnson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Migrant and seasonal farmworkers play a critical role in the U.S. economy, producing food for the American public, while their suffering is often rendered invisible by their existence on the margins of society. The low wages associated with farm labor combined with the largely undocumented status of this population severely limits access to food, housing, and health care, resulting in poor health outcomes. Through the use of a critical anthropological approach, this research examines the social, cultural, political, and economic context of obesity among Latino migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Central Florida. Ethnographic research methods were used to explore perceptions …

A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar Nov 2010

A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Thirty states now have renewable portfolios standards that require generators of electricity to increase their use of renewable energy. Originally intended to promote “energy independence” and other environmental goals, today the programs are among the few U.S. programs which respond to the threat of global warming. This article considers how they work and whether they are effective. It concludes that, in the absence of comprehensive international or federal greenhouse gas controls, renewable portfolio standards are an effective and productive means to retard global warming.

Low Temperature Photo-Oxidation Of Chloroperoxidase Compound Ii, Xinting Yuan, Xin Sheng, John A. Horner, Brian Bennett, Leslie W. -M. Fung, Martin Newcomb

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Oxidation of the heme-thiolate enzyme chloroperoxidase (CPO) from Caldariomyces fumago with peroxynitrite (PN) gave the Compound II intermediate, which was photo-oxidized with 365 nm light to give a reactive oxidizing species. Cryo-solvents at pH ≈ 6 were employed, and reactions were conducted at temperatures as low as − 50 °C. The activity of CPO as evaluated by the chlorodimedone assay was unaltered by treatment with PN or by production of the oxidizing transient and subsequent reaction with styrene. EPR spectra at 77 K gave the amount of ferric protein at each stage in the reaction sequence. The PN oxidation step …

Refractive Index And Dielectric Constant Evolution Of Ultra-Thin Gold From Clusters To Films, X. F. Wang, K. P. Chen, M. Zhao, D. D. Nolte Nov 2010

Refractive Index And Dielectric Constant Evolution Of Ultra-Thin Gold From Clusters To Films, X. F. Wang, K. P. Chen, M. Zhao, D. D. Nolte

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Using high-speed picometrology, the complete cluster-to-film dielectric trajectories of ultra-thin gold films on silica are measured at 488 nm and 532 nm wavelengths for increasing mass-equivalent thickness from 0.2 nm to 10 nm. The trajectories are parametric curves on the complex dielectric plane that consist of three distinct regimes with two turning points. The thinnest regime (0.2 nm - 0.6 nm) exhibits increasing dipole density up to the turning point for the real part of the dielectric function at which the clusters begin to acquire metallic character. The mid-thickness regime (0.6 nm similar to 2 nm) shows a linear trajectory …

Simple Waves In Relativistic Fluids, M. Lyutikov Nov 2010

Simple Waves In Relativistic Fluids, M. Lyutikov

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We consider the Riemann problem for relativistic flows of polytropic fluids and find relations for the flow characteristics. Evolution of physical quantities takes especially simple form for the case of cold magnetized plasmas. We find exact explicit analytical solutions for one-dimensional expansion of magnetized plasma into vacuum, valid for arbitrary magnetization. We also consider expansion into cold unmagnetized external medium both for stationary initial conditions and for initially moving plasma, as well as reflection of rarefaction wave from a wall. We also find self-similar structure of three-dimensional magnetized outflows into vacuum, valid close to the plasma-vacuum interface.
