3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an illicit psychoactive drug with cardiovascular effects that have not been fully described. In the current study, we observed the effects of acute MDMA on rabbit left ventricular function. We also observed the effects of MDMA on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) activity in cultured rat ventricular myocytes (H9c2). In the rabbit, MDMA (2 mg/kg) alone caused a significant increase in heart rate and a significant decrease in the duration of the cardiac cycle. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) by pretreatment with L-NAME (10 mg/kg) alone caused significant dysfunction in heart rate, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, …

Absence Of Polarity In Trail Pheromones And Use Of Sun-Compass Orientation In Leafcutter Ants Atta Cephalotes, November 2010, Marc A. Bliss Nov 2010

Absence Of Polarity In Trail Pheromones And Use Of Sun-Compass Orientation In Leafcutter Ants Atta Cephalotes, November 2010, Marc A. Bliss

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The complex social system of leafcutter ants, Atta cephalotes (Formicidae) requires a high degree of organization and efficiency to ensure the survival of the colony. This suggests that communication between individuals is both common and intricate, especially during the complicated foraging process. Chemical signaling is employed by returning, laden ants along foraging trails. This study tested for the presence of polar properties within these trail pheromones to convey orientation cues to workers. Using manipulated foraging trails of a single colony in San Luis, Costa Rica, I observed individual ant behavior at different times of day. Rather than finding a correlation …

Influence Of Microhabitat Conditions On The Abundance Of American Leaf Spot Disease (Mycena Citricolor) On Coffea Arabica, November 2010, Elizabeth Peterson Nov 2010

Influence Of Microhabitat Conditions On The Abundance Of American Leaf Spot Disease (Mycena Citricolor) On Coffea Arabica, November 2010, Elizabeth Peterson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Coffea arabica (Rubiaceae) is extremely important to the agriculture, economy, and culture of Costa Rica. The primary production of coffee centers on the use of ‘shade-grown’ cultivation methods; even though this method yields high amounts of coffee, it also fosters conditions that are optimal for the growth of diseases, such as Mycena citricolor. This study aimed to determine which microhabitat conditions favor the growth of the disease. In addition to proximity to forest, the orientation of fungi spots, placement of the disease on the branches, and presence of an agricultural crop near the plant was recorded. It was determined that …

Subcaste Composition In Responses To Alarm And Non-Alarm Pheromones On Foraging Trails Of Leaf-Cutter Ant Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2010, Michael Marquis Nov 2010

Subcaste Composition In Responses To Alarm And Non-Alarm Pheromones On Foraging Trails Of Leaf-Cutter Ant Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2010, Michael Marquis

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The response of the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes to its alarm pheromones from crushed heads were compared to its response to crushed bodies without heads in order to examine the relative subcaste (minor and forager) composition of the responding individuals. The percentage of minor workers responding to the body parts near the foraging trail were recorded and compared with the experimentally determined percentage of minors in the trail traffic. The average percentage of minors in the ants responding to the two treatments (Heads: 44.9±0.72%, Bodies: 38.8±0.77%, N = 1300) both differed (p = .0007, p = .0113, df = 1) …

Considerations For Professional Sports Teams Contemplating Going Public, Bryan A. Green, Jorge E. Leal Garrett Nov 2010

Considerations For Professional Sports Teams Contemplating Going Public, Bryan A. Green, Jorge E. Leal Garrett

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The recent and lingering recession has put a significant financial strain on many industries and businesses in the United States, especially professional sports teams. While professional sports teams may not be the most profitable investment to begin with, owners must still keep them as financially sound as possible. This is especially true in these tough financial times. Going public provides the opportunity to raise capital rapidly and thus cannot be overlooked. Having sufficient capital resources is not just important from a business aspect, but is also necessary from a competitive standpoint. As a result, many teams must explore every avenue …

When Your Body Is Your Business, Morgan Holcomb, Mary Patricia Byrn Nov 2010

When Your Body Is Your Business, Morgan Holcomb, Mary Patricia Byrn

Washington Law Review

Surrogacy in the United States is a multi-million dollar industry in which well paid professionals seek out specially qualified women to fill the difficult job of being a surrogate. Surrogates enter lengthy contracts in which they agree, in intricate and intimate detail, to provide a service for significant compensation—as a group, surrogates in the United States are paid well over $22 million per year. This Article argues that surrogates are professionals in this for-profit industry and are required to report surrogacy compensation as income. As a corollary, surrogates may deduct most of their surrogacy-related expenses as business deductions. Being a …

An Affair To Remember: The State Of The Crime Of Adultery In The Military, Katherine Annuschat Nov 2010

An Affair To Remember: The State Of The Crime Of Adultery In The Military, Katherine Annuschat

San Diego Law Review

The recent cases against Penland and Yee demonstrate with clarity the military's willingness to pursue adultery prosecutions for questionable motives. In light of this fact, and the obsolescence of these statutes in the public mind, adultery should be removed from the enumerated offenses under article 134. Part II will discuss the history of the crime of adultery in American jurisprudence, including the current state of adultery as a crime, as well as the current public opinion on adultery in light of several recent high-profile adultery scandals in the media.

Part III will delve into the history of adultery prosecutions in …

Clarifying Murky Mers: Does Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, Inc., Have Authority To Assign The Mortgage Note In A Standard Illinois Foreclosure Action?, Kevin M. Hudspeth

Northern Illinois University Law Review

As the number of mortgage foreclosure actions has substantially increased over recent years, legal scrutiny of the mortgage foreclosure process has likewise increased. The question of whether a little known corporation called Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, Incorporated (MERS) has authority to assign the promissory note secured by a mortgage has become an important question faced by courts in recent months and years. Due to the frequency with which mortgage notes are traded on the secondary mortgage market, the plaintiff in a mortgage foreclosure action is rarely the same party who originated the loan. Under Illinois law, the party entitled to …

Kicking "Single-Entity" To The Sidelines: Reevaluating The Competitive Reality Of Major League Soccer After American Needle And The 2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Matthew J. Jakobsze

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The negotiation of the 2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement brought tense times for professional soccer in the United States. The Major League Soccer Players’ Union sought free agency as a part of the 2010 CBA, a term that would have brought considerable relief from the restrictions imposed through Major League Soccer’s centralized contracting system. In a steadfast effort to retain control, minimize labor costs, and avoid antitrust liability, Major League Soccer refused to yield to the players’ demands. As a result, the parties reached impasse. Devoid of decertification as an option to expose the teams to antitrust scrutiny, the players threatened …

The Need For Rational Boundaries In Civil Conspiracy Claims, Mark A. Behrens, Christopher E. Appel Nov 2010

The Need For Rational Boundaries In Civil Conspiracy Claims, Mark A. Behrens, Christopher E. Appel

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Recently, the tort of civil conspiracy has become a favored weapon of plaintiffs' lawyers in mass tort product liability litigation involving asbestos, breast implants, tobacco, automotive tires and other products, as well as in toxic tort cases. Civil conspiracy claims are often asserted by plaintiffs to allege the liability of peripheral defendants based on their associations with the party primarily responsible for the allegedly injurious product—the manufacturer—such as through membership in a relevant industry or trade association. These claims also fit into a broader pattern of plaintiffs' attorneys seeking to extend concepts of vicarious liability, even to implicate entire industries. …
