Biofunctionalization And Immobilization Of A Membrane Via Peptide Binding (Cr3-1, S2) By A Monte Carlo Simulation, Ras B. Pandey, Hendrik Heinz, Jie Feng, Barry L. Farmer
Faculty Publications
A coarse-grained computer simulation model is used to study the immobilization of a dynamic tethered membrane (representation of a clay platelet) in a matrix of mobile peptide chains CR3-1:(1)Trp-(2)Pro-(3)Ser-(4)Ser-(5)Tyr-(6)Leu-(7)Ser-(8)Pro-(9)Ile-(10)Pro-(11)Tyr-(12)Ser and S2:(1)His-(2)Gly-(3)Ile-(4)Asn-(5)Thr-(6)Thr-(7)Lys-(8)Pro-(9)Phe-(10)Lys-(11)Ser-(12)Val on a cubic lattice. Each residue interacts with the membrane nodes with appropriate interaction and executes their stochastic motion with the Metropolis algorithm. Density profiles, binding energy of each residue, mobility, and targeted structural profile are analyzed as a function of peptide concentration. We find that the binding of peptides S2 is anchored by lysine residues ((7)Lys,(10)Lys) while peptides CR3-1 do not bind to membrane. The membrane slows down …
The Impact Of Attendance On Seventh Grade Math Achievement Scores In Three Northwest Georgia Middle Schools, Patrick Kent Mccrary
The Impact Of Attendance On Seventh Grade Math Achievement Scores In Three Northwest Georgia Middle Schools, Patrick Kent Mccrary
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of attendance on achievement in three northwest Georgia middle schools. The seventh grade students were divided into two groups. One group was considered non-truant, missing fifteen or less days of school, according to the county attendance protocol, and the other group was considered truant, missing 16 or more days, according to the county attendance protocol. The purpose was to determine if there was a statistically significant disparity between the non-truant and truant students on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test scores measured by a t-test. The null hypothesis was that there would …
The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir
The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Federal government can undermine or support state water laws and programs by asserting its legislative power to manage domestic water resources. Predicting the future thrust of the Federal government's legislative involvement in water resources can help states build flexibility into their plans and anticipate where they may be able to get Federal funds to accomplish their water management plans. This paper applies the economic concept of technological externalities to predict that future Federal involvement. The hypothesis of this paper has two parts: 1) that in addition to becoming involved in water resources management to provide public goods and promote …
Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Active intervention of humans in pristine water resource environments has caused both surface and ground waters to degrade in quality and natural purification capacity (Geldreich 1996). Groundwater is often considered to be less impacted than that of surface water due to the absence of climate changes and storm water migrations (Geldreich 1996). Shallow karstic limestone areas (less than 30 m deep) have a greater change of surface contamination since surface water runoff can rapidly percolate through areas lacking a protective bedrock layer.

Clean hydrogen production is highly desirable for future energy needs, making the understanding of molecular-level phenomena underlying photocatalytic hydrogen production both fundamentally and practically important. Water splitting on pure TiO2 is inefficient, however, adding sacrificial methanol could significantly enhance the photocatalyzed H2 production. Therefore, understanding the photochemistry of methanol on TiO2 at the molecular level could provide important insights to its photocatalytic activity. Here, we report the first clear evidence of photocatalyzed splitting of methanol on TiO2 derived from time-dependent two-photon photoemission (TD-2PPE) results in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM tip induced molecular manipulation …

Statistical Model For Polarization Mode Dispersion In Single Mode Fibers, Hassan Abid Yasser
Statistical Model For Polarization Mode Dispersion In Single Mode Fibers, Hassan Abid Yasser
Baghdad Science Journal
As the bit rate of fiber optic transmission systems is increased to more than , the system will suffer from an important random phenomena, which is called polarization mode dispersion. This phenomenon contributes effectively to: increasing pulse width, power decreasing, time jittering, and shape distortion. The time jittering means that the pulse center will shift to left or right. So that, time jittering leads to interference between neighboring pulses. On the other hand, increasing bit period will prevent the possibility of sending high rates. In this paper, an accurate mathematical analysis to increase the rates of transmission, which contain all …

Composition Operator Induced By Φ(Z) = Sz + T For Which |S|≤1, |T|<1 And |S|+|T|≤1, Samira Naji Kadhim
Baghdad Science Journal
We study in this paper the composition operator that is induced byφ(z) = sz + t. We give a characterization of the adjoint of composiotion operators generated by self-maps of the unit ball of form φ(z) = sz + t for which |s|≤1, |t|<1 and |s|+|t|≤1. In fact we prove that the adjoint is a product of toeplitz operators and composition operator. Also, we have studiedthe compactness of Cφand give some other partial results

Improving Requirements Elicitation By Leveraging The Discipline Of Screenwriting, Albert Gardella
Improving Requirements Elicitation By Leveraging The Discipline Of Screenwriting, Albert Gardella
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
As the field of Engineering has expanded, researchers and practitioners have shown increasing interest in the role of high quality Requirements Engineering (RE) in the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and its impact in determining project success. Traditionally, the literature has been dominated by an effort to establish a wider acceptance of the scenario based approach. New ideas, however, are emerging within the past decade which shows researchers presenting various ways that narrative storytelling might be applied to the scenario based approach. This project contributes to the latest wave of literature that looks at narrative and the scenario based approach …

Levinas's Symbiotic Phenomenology Of Infinity And Totality, Christian Wood
Levinas's Symbiotic Phenomenology Of Infinity And Totality, Christian Wood
Philosophy ETDs
I present a novel interpretation of Emmanuel Levinas's phenomenology wherein I argue that his seemingly antagonistic and exclusive notions of "totality" and "infinity" are best understood, rather, as symbiotic, interdependent, and mutually conditioning. My demarche uses close textual analysis, constant reference to Levinas's (admittedly sparse) comments on philosophical method, and an important return to, and then departure from, Cartesian thought in order to advance my thesis that infinity and totality are essentially intertwined and "symbiotic." As such, they are not essentially opposed in any sort of preferential, evaluative, or eliminative sense, to name some prominent (and misguided) caricatures that regrettably …

Characterization Of The Dynamics Of Optically-Injected Nanostructure Lasers, Michael Pochet
Characterization Of The Dynamics Of Optically-Injected Nanostructure Lasers, Michael Pochet
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The direct-modulation of semiconductor lasers is the simplest and most compact approach to pass data onto an optical fiber; however, their intrinsic limitations under direct-modulation such as wavelength chirp and inherent relaxation oscillation frequency constraints impede their high-speed and long-distance capabilities. The injection-locking of semiconductor lasers improves the injected laser's operational characteristics under direct-modulation, attracting a large degree of interest over the past decade. These improvements include increasing the modulation bandwidth through the enhancement of the resonance frequency, suppressing nonlinear distortion, and reducing relative intensity noise, mode-hopping, and chirp. The nonlinear dynamics associated with optically-injected semiconductor lasers has also attracted …

Evaluation Of Fwd Software And Deflection Basin For Airport Pavements, Mesbah Uddin Ahmed
Evaluation Of Fwd Software And Deflection Basin For Airport Pavements, Mesbah Uddin Ahmed
Civil Engineering ETDs
Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) test data are processed by backcalculation software to obtain modulus of layer materials of airport pavements. Currently, several backcalculation software are available. However it is not known which software produces accurate and consistence modulus values. In this study three backcalculation software; namely, BAKFAA, EVERCALC, and MODULUS are evaluated for consistency and accuracy. To examine accuracy, software predicted modulus values are compared to the laboratory tested modulus values of soils, aggregate, and asphalts. Consistency is examined by statistical analysis using three sets of FWD deflection data produced by three loads with magnitudes of 9, 12, and 16 …
Applying Postmodern Philosophical Thought In A High School Language Arts Classroom, Cyrus Cramer
Applying Postmodern Philosophical Thought In A High School Language Arts Classroom, Cyrus Cramer
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This paper was inspired by my own instruction in philosophy as an undergraduate at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA and by my encounter with Robert Scholes book Textual Power while a graduate student at the University of New Mexico. I wanted to examine a way to bring the more useful aspects of postmodern thought to my classroom practices as a high school language arts teacher and I was dissatisfied by the materials I found available as they seemed too much focused on the ideas espoused by the late Richard Rorty. Rorty's thought leads to relativism so severe that it …
Novel Techniques For The Detection And Localization Of Attenuated Gamma-Ray Sources, Tyler Alecksen
Novel Techniques For The Detection And Localization Of Attenuated Gamma-Ray Sources, Tyler Alecksen
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The use of cylindrical solid-crystal detectors for the detection and removal of gamma-emitting sources has become a common practice for the clean-up of radiological contaminated sites. It is often difficult to determine the capability of detecting a sub-surface source without performing experimental studies due to the large variation in detector types, source energy, and attenuating media. Furthermore, significant cost savings can be evident when the source is localized because time and the amount of material to be removed are reduced. The first part of this thesis presents a method to determine the minimal detectable limits of a sub-surface source using …
Pell's Equation And Nearly Equilateral Triangles, Laurel Christensen
Pell's Equation And Nearly Equilateral Triangles, Laurel Christensen
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this paper, we seek a family of triangles that have integer sides and integer area. We focus mainly on scalene triangles since it is impossible to have such triangles that are equilateral and isoceles triangles with these properties are fairly simple to construct. We restrict the scalene triangles we study to Nearly Equilateral Triangles which have consecutive integer sides. In the process of constructing this family, we find an application of Pell's Equation. We follow this with a few other interesting notes on Pell's Equation.

We have developed, fabricated and tested a prototype imaging neutron spectrometer designed for real-time neutron source location and identification. Real-time detection and identification is important for locating materials. These materials, specifically uranium and transuranics, emit neutrons via spontaneous or induced fission. Unlike other forms of radiation (e.g. gamma rays), penetrating neutron emission is very uncommon. The instrument detects these neutrons, constructs images of the emission pattern, and reports the neutron spectrum. The device will be useful for security and proliferation deterrence, as well as for nuclear waste characterization and monitoring. The instrument is optimized for imaging and spectroscopy in the …

Release Of Mercury Halides From Kcl Denuders In The Presence Of Ozone, Seth N. Lyman, Daniel A. Jaffe, Mae S. Gustin
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
KCl-coated denuders have become a standard method for measurement of gaseous oxidized mercury, but their performance has not been exhaustively evaluated, especially in field conditions. In this study, KCl-coated and uncoated quartz denuders loaded with HgCl2 and HgBr2 lost 29–55% of these compounds, apparently as elemental mercury, when exposed to ozone (range of 6–100 ppb tested). This effect was also observed for denuders loaded with gaseous oxidized mercury at a field site in Nevada (3–37% of oxidized mercury lost). In addition, collection efficiency decreased by 12–30% for denuders exposed to 50 ppb ozone during collection of HgCl2 …
