On The Use Of Independent Component Analysis & Functional Network Connectivity Analysis: Evaluation On Two Distinct Large-Scale Psychopathology Studies, Michelle Juárez
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Medical image analysis techniques are becoming ever useful in allowing us to better understand the complexities and constructs of the brain and its functions. These analysis methods have proven to be integral in revealing trends in brain activity within individuals with mental disorders that are distinguishable from what would be considered normal' activity within healthy populations. This has led us to gaining a better understanding of functional connectivity within the brain, especially within populations suffering from mental disorders. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is one of the leading techniques currently being implemented to explore cognitive function and aberrant brain activity …

A More Robust Ant Colony Learning Algorithm : With Application To Travelling Salesman Problem, Viswanath Nandina
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Graph problems model many real life applications, where the quantity of the nodes often changes with time. In such graphs, the evaluation of shortest tour is important as various guiding and navigation systems use this information. Nodes of a graph, in many applications, often change over time, and evaluation of shortest tour is essential whenever a new node is added or deleted. We propose an algorithm that deals with such situations. We have used the Ant System with a different meta-heuristics, to find the shortest tour in a graph. We have analyzed the performance of our proposed algorithm with other …

Modeling And Control Of Wastegate Equipped Turbocharged Engines, Isaac H. Brito
Modeling And Control Of Wastegate Equipped Turbocharged Engines, Isaac H. Brito
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
A method of modeling, simulating (transient), and designing controllers for turbocharged engine systems is presented. The method is specific to spark ignition (SI) engines equipped with pneumatic, spring diaphragm, wastegate actuators, with solenoid valve active boost control. The method revolves around the joint simulation of the engine with Ricardo WAVE software and the control algorithm with Simulink®. A component by component modeling approach is outlined using WAVE, including an experimental approach for modeling the solenoid valve. Controls are designed in MATLAB® using the Zeigler-Nicholss PID tuning method, and a new approach that uses system identification and state-space techniques. Simulink® is …
An Arbitrary Curvilinear Coordinate Particle In Cell Method, Christopher Fichtl
An Arbitrary Curvilinear Coordinate Particle In Cell Method, Christopher Fichtl
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
A new approach to the kinetic simulation of plasmas in complex geometries, based on the Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation method, is explored. In this method, called the Arbitrary Curvilinear Coordinate PIC (ACC-PIC) method, all essential PIC operations are carried out on a uniform, unitary square logical domain and mapped to a nonuniform, boundary fitted physical domain. We utilize an elliptic grid generation technique known as Winslow's method to generate boundary-fitted physical domains. We have derived the logical grid macroparticle equations of motion based on a canonical transformation of Hamilton's equations from the physical domain to the logical. These equations of motion …
Commutators And Dyadic Paraproducts On Weighted Lebesgue Spaces, Dae-Won Chung
Commutators And Dyadic Paraproducts On Weighted Lebesgue Spaces, Dae-Won Chung
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
We prove that the operator norm on weighted Lebesgue space L^2(w) of the commutators of the Hilbert, Riesz and Beurling transforms with a BMO function b depends quadratically on the A2 characteristic of the weight, as opposed to the linear dependence known to hold for the operators themselves. It is known that the operator norms of these commutators can be controlled by the norm of the commutator with appropriate Haar shift operators, and we prove the estimate for these commutators. For the shift operator corresponding to the Hilbert transform we use Bellman function methods, however there is now a general …
Analysis Of Nonlinear Black Scholes Models, Yan Qiu
Analysis Of Nonlinear Black Scholes Models, Yan Qiu
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The Black Scholes equation is a fundamental model for derivative pricing. Modifying its assumptions will lead to more realistic but mathematically more complicated models. This dissertation consists of analytical and numerical studies about one particular type of nonlinear Black Scholes models, whose nonlinearity lies in the highest spatial derivative 1 with discontinuous coefficient function. First we smooth out the discontinuous term and focus only on the nonlinearity. We consider the case where the volatility is a smooth function and present some basic existence and uniqueness results. To study the discontinuity we simplify the problem by discretizing the Partial Differential Equation …
Quantifying Uncertainty In Reliability Block Diagrams, Bea Yu
Quantifying Uncertainty In Reliability Block Diagrams, Bea Yu
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Reliability analysis yields statistically derived technical system performance estimates. Traditional reliability analysis employs classical statistical techniques predicated upon asymptotic properties of large data sets. Not uncommonly, however, medium to small data sets constrain analysis efforts for high risk systems characterized by significant danger or cost. This paper outlines a general reliability analysis paradigm to contend with small to medium data sets. Preliminary sensitivity analysis using scatter plots and tests for non-randomness reveals component-level drivers in system-level performance measures. Comprehensive data collection efforts targeting all available, high-quality information sources decrease and allow analysts to estimate uncertainty in model parameters describing driving …

The Impact Of Mergers On The Degree Of Competition In The Banking Industry, Vittoria Cerasi, Barbara Chizzolini, Marc Ivaldi
The Impact Of Mergers On The Degree Of Competition In The Banking Industry, Vittoria Cerasi, Barbara Chizzolini, Marc Ivaldi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper analyses the relation between competition and concentration in the banking sector. The empirical answer is given by testing a monopolistic competition model of bank branching behaviour on individual bank data at county level (départements and provinces) in France and Italy. We propose a measure of the degree of competiveness in each local market that is function also of market structure indicators. We then use the econometric model to evaluate the impact of horizontal mergers among incumbent banks on competition and discuss when, depending on the pre-merger structure of the market and geographic distribution of branches, the merger is …
On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice
On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Kooperberg and LeBlanc (2008) proposed a two-stage testing procedure to screen for significant interactions in genome-wide association (GWA) studies by a soft threshold on marginal associations (MA), though its theoretical properties and generalization have not been elaborated. In this article, we discuss conditions that are required to achieve strong control of the Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER) by such procedures for low or high-dimensional hypothesis testing. We provide proof of asymptotic independence of marginal association statistics and interaction statistics in linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazard models in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) with a rare event. In case-control …

The Anchor: 2010
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
To fabricate quantum dot arrays with programmable periodicity, functionalized DNA origami nanotubes were developed. Selected DNA staple strands were biotin-labeled to form periodic binding sites for streptavidin-conjugated quantum dots. Successful formation of arrays with periods of 43 and 71 nm demonstrates precise, programmable, large-scale nanoparticle patterning; however, limitations in array periodicity were also observed. Statistical analysis of AFM images revealed evidence for steric hindrance or site bridging that limited the minimum array periodicity.

Community-Based Adaptation: Lessons From The Development Marketplace 2009 On Adaptation To Climate Change, Rasmus Heltberg, Radhika Prabhu, Habiba Gitay
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The Development Marketplace 2009 focused on adaptation to climate change. This paper identifies lessons from the Marketplace and assesses their implications for adaptation support. Our findings are based on: statistical tabulation of all proposals; in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 346 semi-finalists; and interviews with finalists and assessors. Proposals were fuelled by deep concerns that ongoing climate change and its impacts undermine development and exacerbate poverty, migration and food insecurity. Proposals addressed both local poverty and climate change challenges, and offered a wide range of approaches to render local development more resilient to current climate variability. Therefore, support to …

We present an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the rates for all types of compact binary coalescence sources detectable by the initial and advanced versions of the ground-based gravitational-wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. Astrophysical estimates for compact-binary coalescence rates depend on a number of assumptions and unknown model parameters and are still uncertain. Themost confident among these estimates are the rate predictions for coalescing binary neutron stars which are based on extrapolations from observed binary pulsars in our galaxy. These yield a likely coalescence rate of 100 Myr-1 per MilkyWay Equivalent Galaxy (MWEG), although the rate could plausibly range from 1 …
