Interdependent Preferences And Strategic Distinguishability, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris, Satoru Takahashi Sep 2010

Interdependent Preferences And Strategic Distinguishability, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris, Satoru Takahashi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A universal type space of interdependent expected utility preference types is constructed from higher-order preference hierarchies describing (i) an agent’s (unconditional) preferences over a lottery space; (ii) the agent’s preference over Anscombe-Aumann acts conditional on the unconditional preferences; and so on. Two types are said to be strategically indistinguishable if they have an equilibrium action in common in any mechanism that they play. We show that two types are strategically indistinguishable if and only if they have the same preference hierarchy. We examine how this result extends to alternative solution concepts and strategic relations between types.

Congruence Subgroups And Generalized Frobenius-Schur Indicators, Siu Hung Ng, Peter Schauenburg Sep 2010

Congruence Subgroups And Generalized Frobenius-Schur Indicators, Siu Hung Ng, Peter Schauenburg

Faculty Publications

We introduce generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators for pivotal categories. In a spherical fusion category C, an equivariant indicator of an object in C is defined as a functional on the Grothendieck algebra of the quantum double C via generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. The set of all equivariant indicators admits a natural action of the modular group. Using the properties of equivariant indicators, we prove a congruence subgroup theorem for modular categories. As a consequence, all modular representations of a modular category have finite images, and they satisfy a conjecture of Eholzer. In addition, we obtain two formulae for the generalized indicators, one …

Axial Temperature Gradients In Gas Chromatography, Jesse Alberto Contreras Sep 2010

Axial Temperature Gradients In Gas Chromatography, Jesse Alberto Contreras

Theses and Dissertations

The easiest and most effective way to influence the separation process in gas chromatography (GC) is achieved by controlling the temperature of the chromatographic column. In conventional GC, the temperature along the length of the column is constant at any given time, T(t). In my research, I investigated the effects of temperature gradients on GC separations as a function of time and position, T(t,x), along the column. This separation mode is called thermal gradient GC (TGGC). The research reported in this dissertation highlights the fundamental principles of axial temperature gradients and the separation potential of the TGGC technique. These goals …

Empirical Geographic Modeling Of Switchgrass Yields In The United States, Henriette I. Jager, Latha M. Baskaran, Craig C. Brandt, Ethan B. Davis Sep 2010

Empirical Geographic Modeling Of Switchgrass Yields In The United States, Henriette I. Jager, Latha M. Baskaran, Craig C. Brandt, Ethan B. Davis

Dartmouth Scholarship

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial grass native to the United States that has been studied as a sustainable source of biomass fuel. Although many field‐scale studies have examined the potential of this grass as a bioenergy crop, these studies have not been integrated. In this study, we present an empirical model for switchgrass yield and use this model to predict yield for the conterminous United States. We added environmental covariates to assembled yield data from field trials based on geographic location. We developed empirical models based on these data. The resulting empirical models, which account for spatial …

Systems For Assessing And Enhancing The Performance Of Scanning Electron Microscopes By Quantifying And Enforcing Symmetries And Periodicities In Two Dimensions, Peter Moeck Sep 2010

Systems For Assessing And Enhancing The Performance Of Scanning Electron Microscopes By Quantifying And Enforcing Symmetries And Periodicities In Two Dimensions, Peter Moeck

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scanning probe microscope (SPM) images are enhanced by enforcing one or more symmetries that can be selected based on suitable Fourier coefficient amplitude or phase angle residuals, and/ or geometric Akaike information criteria, and/ or cross correlation techniques. Alternatively, this selection can be based on prior knowledge of specimen characteristics. In addition, a scanning microscope point spread function is obtained based on the evaluation of a calibration image by enforcing at least one symmetry and can be applied to other image acquisitions.

Nonperturbative Results For Yang-Mills Theories, Joseph Schechter, Francesco Sannino Sep 2010

Nonperturbative Results For Yang-Mills Theories, Joseph Schechter, Francesco Sannino

Physics - All Scholarship

Some non perturbative aspects of the pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory are investigated assuming a specific form of the beta function, based on a recent modification by Ryttov and Sannino of the known one for supersymmetric gauge theories. The characteristic feature is a pole at a particular value of the coupling constant, g. First it is noted, using dimensional analysis, that physical quantities behave smoothly as one travels from one side of the pole to the other. Then it is argued that the form of the integrated beta function g(m), where m is the mass scale, determines the mass gap of …

Star - Science Teacher And Researcher Program, Center For Excellence In Science And Mathematics Education

STAR Program Research Presentations

The Science Teacher and Researcher (STAR) program addresses the science and mathematics teacher recruitment and retention crisis by creating a prestigious dual "teacher-researcher" career path. Founded and implemented in 2007 by the Cal Poly Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CESaME) on behalf of the California State University (CSU) system, STAR provides cutting edge research experiences and career development for pre-service and early career teachers during early critical years. By anchoring pre-service teachers in the scientific research community, they will come to better understand what it means to be a researcher as well as an effective teacher of …

Direct Observations Of Coherent Backscatter Of Radar Waves In Precipitation, A. R. Jameson, A. B. Kostinski Sep 2010

Direct Observations Of Coherent Backscatter Of Radar Waves In Precipitation, A. R. Jameson, A. B. Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

In previous work, it was argued that a source of radar coherent scatter occurs in the direction perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation because of the presence of grids of enhanced particle concentrations with spatial periodicities in resonance with the radar wavelength. While convincing, the evidence thus far has been indirect. In this work the authors now present direct observations of radar coherent backscattered signals in precipitation in the direction of wave propagation.

The theory is developed for the cross-correlation function of the complex amplitudes in the direction of propagation calculated for nearest neighbor range bins. Data are analyzed …

Conceptual And Methodological Issues Relevant To Cytokine And Inflammatory Marker Measurements In Clinical Research., Xin Zhoua, Maren S. Fragala, Janet E. Mcelhaney, George A. Kuchel

UCHC Articles - Research

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide clinical investigators with an understanding of factors to consider when wishing to add cytokine and inflammatory marker measurements to their studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Inflammation involves complex and coordinated responses of the immune system to tissue damage. In the absence of tools to routinely assess inflammation within living tissues, measurements of humoral factors such as cytokines and other inflammatory mediators or markers can provide predictive clinical information and insights into disease mechanisms. Historically, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) became the gold standard, yet this approach of measuring a single protein in each sample limits the amount of …

A Detailed Mathematical Model Predicts Serial Engagement Of Ige-Fcεri Complexes Can Enhance Syk Activation In Mast Cells, Michael L. Blinov Sep 2010

A Detailed Mathematical Model Predicts Serial Engagement Of Ige-Fcεri Complexes Can Enhance Syk Activation In Mast Cells, Michael L. Blinov

UCHC Articles - Research

The term serial engagement was introduced to describe the ability of a single peptide, bound to a MHC molecule, to sequentially interact with TCRs within the contact region between a T cell and an APC. In addition to ligands on surfaces, soluble multivalent ligands can serially engage cell surface receptors with sites on the ligand, binding and dissociating from receptors many times before all ligand sites become free and the ligand leaves the surface. To evaluate the role of serial engagement in Syk activation, we use a detailed mathematical model of the initial signaling cascade that is triggered when FcepsilonRI …

Laboratory Earth: A Model Of Online K-12 Teacher Coursework, David Gosselin, Julie Thomas, Adrienne Redmond, Cindy S. Larson-Miller, Sara Yendra, Ronald J. Bonnstetter, Timothy F. Slater

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Laboratory Earth, a series of three NASA-Sponsored, on-line graduate courses for K-8 teachers, was designed to meet a variety of learning styles and appeal to teachers‟ motivation to learn the content and improve their teaching. This is especially important to teachers as they seek to demonstrate “highly qualified” status to meet No Child Left Behind standards. These graduate-level courses consist of four modules of two to four lessons each. Pre- and post-course surveys indicated significant increases in teachers‟ (n=51) content knowledge, science teaching efficacy beliefs (STEBI-A), sense of community within the course (LEO) and science teaching enjoyment (STES). Qualitative data …

Restoring Hope, Marie Cianca

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

In 2003, Dr. Freddie Thomas Middle School in Rochester, New York, was in serious trouble. In 2000, it had been labeled a "school under registration review" by the New York State Education Department and was under a directive to make significant progress or face serious consequences. Three years later in 2003, only 3% of eighth-grade students were meeting state standards in mathematics and only 9% in English language arts. The school climate was no better. There was little sense of order, and 911 calls were an everyday occurrence. The middle school had opened in 1995 with much fanfare. It was …

Quiescent X-Ray Emission From Cen X-4: A Variable Thermal Component, Edward M. Cackett, Edward F. Brown, Jon M. Miller, Rudy Wijnands

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

The nearby neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, Cen X-4, has been in a quiescent state since its last outburst in 1979. Typically, quiescent emission from these objects consists of thermal emission (presumably from the neutron star surface) with an additional hard power-law tail of unknown nature. Variability has been observed during quiescence in Cen X-4 on both timescales as short as hundreds of seconds and as long as years. However, the nature of this variability is still unknown. Early observations seemed to show it was all due to a variable hard X-ray tail. Here, we present new and archival observations …

Determination Of Cyanide Exposure By Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of Cyanide-Exposed Plasma Proteins, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, John A. Lee, Brian A. Logue Sep 2010

Determination Of Cyanide Exposure By Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of Cyanide-Exposed Plasma Proteins, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, John A. Lee, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Exposure to cyanide can occur in a variety of ways, including exposure to smoke from cigarettes or fires, accidental exposure during industrial processes, and exposure from the use of cyanide as a poison or chemical warfare agent. Confirmation of cyanide exposure is difficult because, in vivo, cyanide quickly breaks down by a number of pathways, including the formation of both free and protein-bound thiocyanate. A simple method was developed to confirm cyanide exposure by extraction of protein-bound thiocyanate moieties from cyanide-exposed plasma proteins. Thiocyanate was successfully extracted and subsequently derivatized with pentafluorobenzyl bromide for GC–MS analysis. Thiocyanate levels as low …

The Oecd And Economic Governance: Invisibility And Impotence?, Richard Woodward Sep 2010

The Oecd And Economic Governance: Invisibility And Impotence?, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

Chapter 3 sketches the OECD's role in economic governance, in particular the pursuit of its obligation to promote policies which maximize economic growth. While the OECD's work in the economic field evolves, its mechanisms of economic governance have barely altered. Richard Woodward argues that the OECD exerts ‘subtle discipline’ over the trajectory of economic governance through the use of its soft law mechanisms such as surveillance and peer review. These mechanisms can lead to convergence in national policies and, occasionally, outbreaks of international policy coordination. Ultimately, however, the proliferation of international mechanisms of governance and the internal politics of the …
