Promises And Potential Pitfalls Of A 'Cognitive Neuroscience Of Mathematics Learning', Roland H. Grabner, Daniel Ansari

Paediatrics Publications

The present commentary discusses the papers of the special issue on 'cognitive neuroscience and mathematics learning' with respect to methodological and theoretical constraints of using neuroscientific methods to study educationally relevant processes associated with mathematics learning. A special focus is laid on the relevance of subject populations, methodological limitations of current neuroimaging methods and theoretical questions concerning the relationship between the well-studied neural correlates of numerical magnitude processing and the less-investigated neural processes underlying higher level mathematical skills, such as algebraic reasoning. © FIZ Karlsruhe 2010.

Induced Absorption Dynamics In Quantum Dot Based Waveguide Electroabsorbers, T. Piwonski, Jaroslaw Pulka, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al. Sep 2010

Induced Absorption Dynamics In Quantum Dot Based Waveguide Electroabsorbers, T. Piwonski, Jaroslaw Pulka, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Two-color pump-probe measurements are used to study the carrier dynamics of InAs/GaAs quantum dots in a waveguide structure under reverse bias conditions. For the case of initially populating the ground state (GS), we find relaxation dynamics that include both absorptive and bleaching components in the excited state (ES) wavelength range. We reproduce the main features of this induced absorption dynamics using a simple model with an additional term for induced absorption at the ES due to carriers injected at the GS. The induced absorption dynamics includes multiple recovery timescales which can be attributed to phonon-assisted processes of GS/ES interaction.

Zen And The Art Of Tort Litigation, Anne Bloom Sep 2010

Zen And The Art Of Tort Litigation, Anne Bloom

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Legal analysis in tort litigation should encourage deeper engagement with the plaintiffs pain and suffering. Focusing more on understanding the causes and experience of human suffering-the Zen approach-will advance traditional tort goals of compensation and deterrence, as well as provide the plaintiff with a more positive litigation experience. This Article argues that current practices in tort litigation place too much emphasis on bodily harm and expert testimony, and unnecessarily position the plaintiff as a victim. Alternatively, a Zen approach recognizes that the body and mind are linked, places greater weight on direct, experiential testimony, and acknowledges the complexity and fluidity …

Winner, Winner, No Chicken Dinner: An Analysis Of Interactive Media Ent'mt & Gaming Ass'n V. Att'y Gen. Of The U.S. And The Unjustified Consequences Of The Uigea, Rotem Nicole Moran

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

This note observes the deficiencies of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), placing special emphasis on the 2009 Third Circuit decision in Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association v. Attorney General of the United States, which upheld the constitutionality of the UIGEA. Since the initial preparation of this note, the federal government has initiated its enforcement and shut down of some of the largest United States internet gaming sites, referencing the UIGEA as the source for its authority. This note proposes a complete overhaul of the present enforcement tactics by means of repealing the UIGEA and …

What Happened To Unjust Enrichment In California - The Deterioration Of Equity In The California Courts, Douglas L. Johnson, Neville L. Johnson Sep 2010

What Happened To Unjust Enrichment In California - The Deterioration Of Equity In The California Courts, Douglas L. Johnson, Neville L. Johnson

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Under common law, the principles ofequity have always demanded the recognition of the right of individuals to seek recovery under the theory of unjust enrichment. Recovery under this doctrine is so deeply embedded into Western Society that it continues to be a core element in legal education and is codified in the Restatement Third of Contracts. Despite this rich tradition, an alarming divergence in decisions among California courts is deteriorating unjust enrichment as an independent cause- of-action, leaving many Californians who have been taken advantage of, unprotected. This Article examines the historical underpinnings of unjust enrichment and the confusion among …

Teaching Calculus With Wolfram Alpha, Andrew Lang Sep 2010

Teaching Calculus With Wolfram Alpha, Andrew Lang

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article describes the benefits and drawbacks of using Wolfram|Alpha as the platform for teaching calculus concepts in the lab setting. It is a result of our experiences designing and creating an entirely new set of labs using Wolfram|Alpha. We present the reasoning behind our transition from using a standard computer algebra system (CAS) to Wolfram|Alpha in our differential and integral calculus labs, together with the positive results from our experience. We also discuss the current limitations of Wolfram|Alpha, including a discussion on why we still use a CAS for our multivariate calculus labs.

Discovery Of Cyclic Spot Activity On The G8 Giant Hd 208472, Orkun Özdarcan, Serdar Evren, Klaus G. Strassmeier, Thomas Granzer, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present and analyze 17 consecutive years of UBVRI time-series photometry of the spotted giant component of the RS CVn binary HD 208472. Our aim is to determine the morphology and the evolution of its starspots by using periodsearch techniques and two-spot light-curve modelling. Spots on HD208472 always occur on hemispheres facing the observer during orbital quadrature and flip their location to the opposite hemisphere every approximately six years. The times when the spots change their preferential hemisphere correspond to times when the light curve amplitudes are the smallest and when abrupt changes of the photometric periods are observed. During …

System Identification And State Estimation For Intake Manifold Charge Flow Temperature Of A Compression Ignition Diesel Engine, Ryle D. Maxson Sep 2010

System Identification And State Estimation For Intake Manifold Charge Flow Temperature Of A Compression Ignition Diesel Engine, Ryle D. Maxson

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Intake manifold charge temperature is a factor used in mean value engine models (MVEMs) for the calculation of intake mass air charge and oxygen flow. More stringent emission requirements have led to increased deployment of more advanced engine combustion models onto production engine controllers. Measurement of the temperature via physical thermocouple sensors mounted to the engine intake manifold is both slow, in comparison to the changing conditions of an engine, and undesirable due to the cost and increased complexity of extra sensors. A state estimation model has been evaluated that imitates the function of the intake manifold temperature sensor reading, …

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell Sep 2010

Biological Computation, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, the term biological computation refers to the proposal that living organisms themselves perform computations, and, more specifically, that the abstract ideas of information and computation may be key to understanding biology in a more unified manner. It is important to point out that the study of biological computation is typically not the focus of the field of computational biology, which applies computing tools to the solution of specific biological problems. Likewise, biological computation is distinct from the field of biologically-inspired computing, which borrows ideas from biological systems such as the brain, insect colonies, and the immune system …

Uncertainty Quantification Study For A Comprehensive Electrostatic Mems Switch Model, Michael G. Snow, Anil K. Bajaj Sep 2010

Uncertainty Quantification Study For A Comprehensive Electrostatic Mems Switch Model, Michael G. Snow, Anil K. Bajaj

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

This work presents an uncertainty analysis of a comprehensive model for an electrostatic MEMS switch. The goal is to elucidate the effects of parameter variations on certain performance characteristics. A sufficiently detailed model of an electrostatically actuated beam is developed. This model accounts for various physical effects, including the electrostatic fringing field, finite length of electrodes, squeeze film damping, and contact between the beam and the dielectric layer. The performance characteristics of immediate interest are the static and dynamic pull-in voltages for switch. Using Latin Hypercube and other sampling methods, the model is evaluated to find these performances characteristics when …

Applications Of Geophysical Analysis For Environmental And Geotechnical Problems, Basil Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Geophysical investigative techniques including Magnetic, Electric, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Geochemistry become increasingly essential to study near surface setting as well as deep earth structure. A model was developed of the hot water system in southwest Arkansas using Geochemistry, Magnetic, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data. The model was constructed using the data collected at the Caddo Gap and Little Missouri Hot Springs in Southeast Arkansas, USA. Understanding the mechanism of the transition from slow flow in porous media to fast flow in a fracture is critical in understanding the hot water flow of the hot spring. The geochemistry …

Untargeted Metabolite Profiling Using A Multi-Way Decomposition Method, Minho Chae Sep 2010

Untargeted Metabolite Profiling Using A Multi-Way Decomposition Method, Minho Chae

Theses and Dissertations

Although gas chromatograpy-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is a mature technology for profiling primary metabolites, analyzing those datasets in a large-scale and high-throughput manner is a great challenge because of the complex nature of the data. There is often non-linear inter-run variance in the retention time between runs, making it difficult to identify corresponding peaks among multiple runs. Moreover, peaks are rarely homogeneous. They often contain systematic signals, i.e., background, or non-systematic signals, i.e., noise, and many peaks comprise multiple co-eluting or overlapping components. Thus, identifying all the pure components in all of the peaks from the entire dataset, and comparing them …
