Comparison Of Flight And Ground Tests Of Environmental Degradation Of Misse-6 Suspecs Materials, Jr Dennison, John Prebola, Amberly Evans Jensen, Joshua L. Hodges

Conference Proceedings

The effects of prolonged exposure to the LEO space environment and charge-enhanced contamination on optical, thermal, and electron emission and transport properties of common spacecraft materials has been investigated by comparing pre- and post-flight characterization measurements. The State of Utah Space Environment & Contamination Study (SUSpECS) deployed in March 2008 on board the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE-6) payload, was exposed for ~18 months on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS), before retrieval in September 2009. A total of 165 samples were …

Government Transparency And The Obama Era, Ross Schulman Sep 2010

Government Transparency And The Obama Era, Ross Schulman

Legislation and Policy Brief

Government transparency has been a focus of President Barack Obama’s campaign and administration, but effort has been expended on programs that have emphasized policy and legislative transparency over ethical and data transparency. This emphasis is misplaced. During the 2008 Presidential Election, the Obama campaign tapped into a large reserve of predominantly younger people who demanded a connection with the candidates before them. A large part of that connection was focused on the transparency that came from this highly networked campaign. President Obama’s campaign in particular embodied that approach, both through its promises and its actions. Now that the Obama administration …

A Long-Term Analysis Of The Relationship Between Fluency And The Training And Maintenance Of Complex Math Skills, Jessica Singer-Dudek, R. Douglas Greer

The Psychological Record

In 2 experiments, each involving different mathematical operations, we compared 2 training procedures for teaching component math skills in terms of their effects on the learning and long-term maintenance of composite skills. The dependent variables were learn units to composite task mastery and performance on the composite task 2 months later. The independent variables were instruction in math facts under (a) fluency and (b) mastery conditions. The experiments used a simultaneous treatment design in which the students were selected for participation according to prerequisite skills and instructional histories and randomly assigned to receive 1 of the 2 training procedures. Four …

A Low-Temperature Phase Of Bis(Tetrabutylammonium) Octa-L3-Chloridohexachlorido- Octahedro-Hexatungstate, Dean H. Johnston, Chris M. Brown, Andrew S. Yu, Judith C. Gallucci

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The article discusses the low-temperature phase of bis(tetrabutylammonium) octa-µ3-chlorido-hexachlorido-octahedro-hexa-tungstate, which undergoes a reversible phase transition at 268 K. The unit cells of the room- and low-temperature polymorphs of this compound are found to be closely related. The hydrocarbon chain of one of the tetrabutylammonium cations is found to be disordered at both 150 and 200 K.

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2009 : Final Report, Frederick T. Short Sep 2010

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2009 : Final Report, Frederick T. Short

PREP Reports & Publications

Eelgrass in the Great Bay Estuary in 2009 was once again present only in Great Bay itself and in Portsmouth Harbor. For the second year in a row, there was no eelgrass in Little Bay or in the Piscataqua River. In 2009, there was a continued loss of eelgrass biomass in Great Bay; there has been a 66.4% loss of biomass in Great Bay since 1996 and distribution is 30% less than in 1996. Although eelgrass distribution in Great Bay itself increased between 2008 and 2009, primarily due to continued expansion from natural seeding of bare areas, the Bay’s eelgrass …

Weakly Positioned Nucleosomes Enhance The Transcriptional Competency Of Chromatin, Yaakov Belch, Jingyi Yang, Yang Liu, Sridhar A. Malkaram, Rong Liu, Jean-Jack M. Riethoven, Istvan Ladunga Sep 2010

Weakly Positioned Nucleosomes Enhance The Transcriptional Competency Of Chromatin, Yaakov Belch, Jingyi Yang, Yang Liu, Sridhar A. Malkaram, Rong Liu, Jean-Jack M. Riethoven, Istvan Ladunga

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Background: Transcription is affected by nucleosomal resistance against polymerase passage. In turn, nucleosomal resistance is determined by DNA sequence, histone chaperones and remodeling enzymes. The contributions of these factors are widely debated: one recent title claims ‘‘… DNA-encoded nucleosome organization…’’ while another title states that ‘‘histone-DNA interactions are not the major determinant of nucleosome positions.’’ These opposing conclusions were drawn from similar experiments analyzed by idealized methods. We attempt to resolve this controversy to reveal nucleosomal competency for transcription.

Methodology/Principal Findings: To this end, we analyzed 26 in vivo, nonlinked, and in vitro genome-wide nucleosome maps/replicates by new, rigorous …

Drug Off-Target Effects Predicted Using Structural Analysis In The Context Of A Metabolic Network Model, Roger L. Chang, Lei Xie, Philip E. Bourne, Bernhard O. Palsson Sep 2010

Drug Off-Target Effects Predicted Using Structural Analysis In The Context Of A Metabolic Network Model, Roger L. Chang, Lei Xie, Philip E. Bourne, Bernhard O. Palsson

Publications and Research

Recent advances in structural bioinformatics have enabled the prediction of protein-drug off-targets based on their ligand binding sites. Concurrent developments in systems biology allow for prediction of the functional effects of system perturbations using large-scale network models. Integration of these two capabilities provides a framework for evaluating metabolic drug response phenotypes in silico. This combined approach was applied to investigate the hypertensive side effect of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor torcetrapib in the context of human renal function. A metabolic kidney model was generated in which to simulate drug treatment. Causal drug off-targets were predicted that have previously been …

Leggett-Garg Inequalities And The Geometry Of The Cut Polytope, David Avis, Patrick Hayden, Mark M. Wilde Sep 2010

Leggett-Garg Inequalities And The Geometry Of The Cut Polytope, David Avis, Patrick Hayden, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

The Bell and Leggett-Garg tests offer operational ways to demonstrate that nonclassical behavior manifests itself in quantum systems, and experimentalists have implemented these protocols to show that classical worldviews such as local realism and macrorealism are false, respectively. Previous theoretical research has exposed important connections between more general Bell inequalities and polyhedral combinatorics. We show here that general Leggett-Garg inequalities are closely related to the cut polytope of the complete graph, a geometric object well-studied in combinatorics. Building on that connection, we offer a family of Leggett-Garg inequalities that are not trivial combinations of the most basic Leggett-Garg inequalities. We …

Vector Measures Without Weak Compactness: Part Ii, Iwo Labuda Sep 2010

Vector Measures Without Weak Compactness: Part Ii, Iwo Labuda

Analysis Seminar

The title above refers to a 1955 paper of Bartle, Dunford, and Schwartz 'Weak Compactness and Vector Measures' in which integration of scalar functions with respect to a vector measure was first defined. Vector measures considered in the original paper were Banach space valued and the notion of weak compactness played the key role in the development of the theory. 55 years later, I am happy to report that the theory can be developed without any constraints on the range space (and so the notion of weak topology is not even available, in general). Let be a σ-algebra of …

Adjunctive Role For Immediate Feedback In The Acquisition And Retention Of Mathematical Fact Series By Elementary School Students Classified With Mild Mental Retardation, Roberta E. Dihoff, Gary M. Brosvic, Michael L. Epstein, Michael J. Cook

The Psychological Record

The effects of feedback on the acquisition and retention of mathematical fact series by elementary school students classified with mild mental retardation was examined in 4 studies. Immediate feedback was provided by either an educator or the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF AT), at the end of a test series by a review of correct solutions (delayed feedback), or for control purposes, with a Scantron form. Reductions in errors and inaccurate perseverative responding during intervention periods were higher, and the repetition of errors during maintenance test was lower, when feedback was provided by an educator in Study 1. These results …
