Xmm-Newton Observations Of Hd 189733 During Planetary Transits, Ignazio Pillitteri, Scott J. Wolk, Ofer Cohen, Vinay Kashyap, Heather Knutson, Carey M. Lisse, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report on two XMM-Newton observations of the planetary host star HD 189733. The system has a close in planet and it can potentially affect the coronal structure via interactions with the magnetosphere. We have obtained X-ray spectra and light curves from EPIC and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on board XMM-Newton which we have analyzed and interpreted. We reduced X-ray data from the primary transit and secondary eclipse that occurred on 2007 April 17 and 2009 May 18, respectively. In the 2007 April observation, only variability due to weak flares is recognized. In 2009 HD 189733 exhibited an X-ray flux …

Physics & Astronomy

The first all-sky maps of Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) exhibited smoothly varying, globally distributed flux and a narrow "ribbon" of enhanced ENA emissions. In this study we compare the second set of sky maps to the first in order to assess the possibility of temporal changes over the 6 months between views of each portion of the sky. While the large-scale structure is generally stable between the two sets of maps, there are some remarkable changes that show that the heliosphere is also evolving over this short timescale. In particular, we find that (1) …

At the end of World War II, a severe 5-mo famine struck the cities in the western part of The Netherlands. At its peak, the rations dropped to as low as 400 calories per day. In 1972, cognitive performance in 19-y-old male conscripts was reported not to have been affected by exposure to the famine before birth. In the present study, we show that cognitive function in later life does seem affected by prenatal undernutrition. We found that at age 56 to 59, men and women exposed to famine during the early stage of gestation performed worse on a selective …

Estimation Of Quality Adjusted Lifetime (Qal) Distribution., Biswabrata Pradhan Dr. Sep 2010

Estimation Of Quality Adjusted Lifetime (Qal) Distribution., Biswabrata Pradhan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Quality Adjusted Lifetime (QAL)Normally, overall survival time is considered as the end point for many clinical trials to study the effectiveness of different treatments. If the survival time passes through different health states, which differ in their quality of life, then other endpoints are also considered for treatment comparison, which incorporates both quality and duration of life. It is, therefore, necessary to provide a composite measure for comparison of different treatment choices, specially in the context of clinical trials, after taking into account both quality and duration of life. This issue has been first addressed by Gelber and coauthors in …

Optical Discovery Of An Apparent Galactic Supernova Remnant G159.6+7.3, Robert A. Fesen, Dan Milisavljevic

Dartmouth Scholarship

Deep Hα images of portions of a faint 3° × 4° Hα shell centered at l = 1596, b = 73 seen on the Virginia Tech Spectral Line Survey images revealed the presence of several thin emission filaments along its eastern limb. Low-dispersion optical spectra of two of these filaments covering the wavelength range of 4500-7500 Å show narrow Hα line emissions with velocities around –170 ± 30 km s–1. Both the morphology and spectra of these filaments are consistent with a Balmer-dominated shock interpretation and we propose that these optical filaments indicate that the large Hα emission …

Factors That Influence Faculty Intentions To Support The Community College Baccalaureate, Lori Kielty Sep 2010

Factors That Influence Faculty Intentions To Support The Community College Baccalaureate, Lori Kielty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of community colleges in the United States are becoming baccalaureate-granting institutions. Proponents of the community college baccalaureate (CCB) argue that the CCB provides students with access to higher education, while others argue the CCB will compromise the community college's core values.

The purpose of this study is to explore faculty members' intention to support the CCB transition. Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior provides the theoretical framework for the study. The theory assumes that changes in behavior are intentional and, therefore, can be planned. This theory posits that attitudes, subjective (social) norms, and perceived behavioral control predict intentions …

Economic Growth And Human Development In South Asia: Experience Of Selected Countries, Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Amarjit S. Bhullar Sep 2010

Economic Growth And Human Development In South Asia: Experience Of Selected Countries, Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Amarjit S. Bhullar

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The market fundamentals in a knowledge-driven economic environment are closely associated with the quality of human resources. The differences in the stock of human resources determine the process of convergence or divergence among countries and in turn the overall position and power of the country in the world. The countries that fail to increase their share in global knowledge market face marginalization. South Asia, in general, and countries in the region (especially India), in particular, have experienced unprecedented growth since 1990s. It helped in poverty reduction and raised the human development index. However, though there is hardly any improvement in …

Evaluation Of School Wellness Policies In South San Luis Obispo County (Final Report), Ann Yelmokas Mcdermott, David W. Hey, Laurie Pugh, Rosanna Taylor, Arlene Grant-Holcomb, Stephanie F. Teaford

Kinesiology and Public Health

A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county’s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) In March 2009, a research team from the newly formed STRIDE at California Polytechnic State University was contracted to review and evaluate …

Academic Performance, Persistence, And Degree Completion Of Associate In Arts Degree Recipients Transferring To A Four-Year Multi-Campus Institution, Saul Reyes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study assessed if there were differences in the academic performance, persistence, and degree completion for Associate in Arts transfer students in selected majors who enrolled in the different campuses of a multi-campus university. This causal comparative study analyzed historical student enrollment data from a large, urban, public, research university. Multiple and logistic regression techniques were used to simultaneously control for important independent variables identified in the literature. Variables that were significant (p < .05) for at least one of the three dependent variables included campus, major, community college GPA, gender, and ethnicity. Significant campus differences were found in academic performance, but not for persistence or degree completion. Significant differences by major were reported for academic performance, persistence, and degree completion.

A Comparative Analysis Of Auditing Within The Healthcare Database, Richard E. Butler Sep 2010

A Comparative Analysis Of Auditing Within The Healthcare Database, Richard E. Butler

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Healthcare database system utilization and processing demands are projected to increase significantly within the next decade due to governmental incentives, regulatory requirements, economic motivators and industry regulations. To that end, system engineers, architects, developers and solution providers will be pressured to meet these varied challenges while achieving or improving current system performance benchmarks. Healthcare database performance related to auditing has received little scholarly attention to date. A comparative analysis of two database auditing architectures is studied to identify efficiencies in auditing architectures within the healthcare domain. This study will explore and analyze native auditing supported by Microsoft's SQL Server 2008 …
