Acceleration Radiation, Transition Probabilities And Trans-Planckian Physics, Ivan Agullo, José Navarro-Salas, Gonzalo J. Olmo, Leonard Parker Sep 2010

Acceleration Radiation, Transition Probabilities And Trans-Planckian Physics, Ivan Agullo, José Navarro-Salas, Gonzalo J. Olmo, Leonard Parker

Faculty Publications

An important question in the derivation of the acceleration radiation, which also arises in Hawking's derivation of black hole radiance, is the need to invoke trans-Planckian physics in describing the creation of quanta. We point out that this issue can be further clarified by reconsidering the analysis in terms of particle detectors, transition probabilities and local two-point functions. By writing down separate expressions for the spontaneous-and induced-transition probabilities of a uniformly accelerated detector, we show that the bulk of the effect comes from the natural (non-trans-Planckian) scale of the problem, which largely diminishes the importance of the trans-Planckian sector. This …

Cosmic Microwave Background Constraints On Cosmological Models With Large-Scale Isotropy Breaking, Haoxuan Zheng, Emory F. Bunn Sep 2010

Cosmic Microwave Background Constraints On Cosmological Models With Large-Scale Isotropy Breaking, Haoxuan Zheng, Emory F. Bunn

Physics Faculty Publications

Several anomalies appear to be present in the large-angle cosmic microwave background anisotropy maps of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, including the alignment of large-scale multipoles. Models in which isotropy is spontaneously broken (e.g., by a scalar field) have been proposed as explanations for these anomalies, as have models in which a preferred direction is imposed during inflation. We examine models inspired by these, in which isotropy is broken by a multiplicative factor with dipole and/or quadrupole terms. We evaluate the evidence provided by the multipole alignment using a Bayesian framework, finding that the evidence in favor of the model …

U.S.-Based Fast-Food Restaurants: Factors Influencing The International Expansion Of Franchise Systems, Ilan Alon, Liqiang Ni Sep 2010

U.S.-Based Fast-Food Restaurants: Factors Influencing The International Expansion Of Franchise Systems, Ilan Alon, Liqiang Ni

Faculty Publications

Studies of international franchising are scant, but increasing, and can be divided into two streams of research: those focusing on environmental predictors of internationalization and those focusing on strategic, firm-level characteristics. Examingin the latter category, this study empirically explores a set of firm-level attributes as predictors of decision-making on whether or not firms seek international expansion. using longitudinal data from Bond's Franchise Guide 2001-2000, we draw on a sample of U.S.-based fast-food franchise systems to test our hypotheses. Specifically, out database is comprised of 1,058 observations of 158 chains and we estimate a semi-parametric logistic modlel for international franchising. The …

The Trilinear Hamiltonian: A Zero-Dimensional Model Of Hawking Radiation From A Quantized Source, Paul D. Nation, Miles P. Blencowe Sep 2010

The Trilinear Hamiltonian: A Zero-Dimensional Model Of Hawking Radiation From A Quantized Source, Paul D. Nation, Miles P. Blencowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate a quantum parametric amplifier with dynamical pump mode, viewed as a zero-dimensional model of Hawking radiation from an evaporating black hole. We derive the conditions under which the spectrum of particles generated from vacuum fluctuations deviates from the thermal spectrum predicted for the conventional parametric amplifier. We find that significant deviations arise when the pump mode (black hole) has emitted nearly half of its initial energy into the signal (Hawking radiation) and idler (in-falling particle) modes. As a model of black hole dynamics, this finding lends support to the view that late-time Hawking radiation contains information about the …

Estimating Temporal Associations In Electrocorticographic (Ecog) Time Series With First Order Pruning, Haley Hedlin, Dana Boatman, Brian Caffo Sep 2010

Estimating Temporal Associations In Electrocorticographic (Ecog) Time Series With First Order Pruning, Haley Hedlin, Dana Boatman, Brian Caffo

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Granger causality (GC) is a statistical technique used to estimate temporal associations in multivariate time series. Many applications and extensions of GC have been proposed since its formulation by Granger in 1969. Here we control for potentially mediating or confounding associations between time series in the context of event-related electrocorticographic (ECoG) time series. A pruning approach to remove spurious connections and simultaneously reduce the required number of estimations to fit the effective connectivity graph is proposed. Additionally, we consider the potential of adjusted GC applied to independent components as a method to explore temporal relationships between underlying source signals. Both …

Environmental Efficiency Among Corn Ethanol Plants, Juan P. Sesmero, Richard K. Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Sep 2010

Environmental Efficiency Among Corn Ethanol Plants, Juan P. Sesmero, Richard K. Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Economic viability of the US corn ethanol industry depends on prices, technical and economic efficiency of plants and on continuation of policy support. Public policy support is tied to the environmental efficiency of plants measured as their impact on emissions of greenhouse gases. This study evaluates the environmental efficiency of seven recently constructed ethanol plants in the North Central region of the U.S., using nonparametric data envelopment analysis (DEA). The minimum level of GHG emissions (per gallon of ethanol produced) feasible with the available technology is calculated for each plant and this level is used to decompose environmental efficiency into …
