Oga Inhibition By Glcnac-Selenazoline, E. J. Kim, D. C. Love, E. Darout, M. Abdo, B. Rempel, S. G. Withers, Paul R. Rablen, J. A. Hanover, S. Knapp Oct 2010

Oga Inhibition By Glcnac-Selenazoline, E. J. Kim, D. C. Love, E. Darout, M. Abdo, B. Rempel, S. G. Withers, Paul R. Rablen, J. A. Hanover, S. Knapp

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The title compound, which differs from the powerful O-GlcNAcase (OGA) inhibitor GlcNAc-thiazoline only at the chalcogen atom (Se for S), is a much weaker inhibitor in a direct OGA assay. In human cells, however, the selenazoline shows comparable ability to induce hyper-O-GlcNAc-ylation, and the two show similar reduction of insulin-stimulated translocation of glucose transporter 4 in differentiated 3T3 adipocytes. Review Of Rethinking The Fur Trade: Cultures Of Exchange In An Atlantic World, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr. Oct 2010

Review Of Rethinking The Fur Trade: Cultures Of Exchange In An Atlantic World, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Faculty Publications & Research

The engine behind [European imperialism and colonization] was the fur trade, a vast, complex, too often misunderstood commerce that drew Europeans deep into the interior of the continent, enmeshed its native peoples in the global economy, and helped trigger almost 125 years of imperial war for possession of America. Susan Sleeper-Smith has done this important subject a considerable service with Rethinking the Fur Trade. In a massive, elegantly appointed anthology, she has provided graduate students with a comprehensive summary of modern scholarship in the field, instructors with a sophisticated and variegated classroom tool, and scholars with an invaluable historiographical …

The Imsa-Sf Paradigm: Why It’S All The Same To Me, Sarah Weitekamp '11 Oct 2010

The Imsa-Sf Paradigm: Why It’S All The Same To Me, Sarah Weitekamp '11

2010 Fall Semester

On what must have been my third or fourth day of IMSA, I remember an upperclassman asking me, “You’ve read Ender’s Game, right? You have to read that book—everyone at IMSA does.” I had, in fact, read the book, and I immediately felt relieved. I felt had passed my first test at IMSA, plus I was geeked to learn that my taste in books wasn’t out of place here. I shouldn’t have been so surprised. IMSA is overflowing with science fiction fans of all varieties—we are a nerd school after all, even if the Admissions Office disapproves of my …

Scientific Speculators: Imsa As Training Ground For Science Fiction Readers, Lisa Akintilo '11 Oct 2010

Scientific Speculators: Imsa As Training Ground For Science Fiction Readers, Lisa Akintilo '11

2010 Fall Semester

Science fiction (SF) is one of the world’s fastest-growing literary genres. Created as a separation from traditional writing styles, it challenges its followers to question the framework of societies across the globe. One would think that such a genre would allow people of all different ages, shapes, and sizes to enjoy its distinctive novels, but this is not the case. Readers of SF must be inquisitive, opinionated, and confident; in other words, be extremely similar to a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. IMSA’s belief statements and learning standards perfectly align with editor David Hartwell’s description of an …

Spatio-Temporal Coupling Of Random Electromagnetic Pulses Interacting With Reflecting Gratings, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova, Qiang Lin, Zhaoying Wang

Physics Articles and Papers

Matrix optics is applied to a class of random, in time and space, electromagnetic pulsed beam-like (REMPB) radiation interacting with linear optical elements. A 66 order matrix describing transformation of a six-dimensional state vector including four spatial and two temporal positions within the field is used to derive conditions for spatio-temporal coupling. An example is included which deals with a spatio-temporal coupling in a typical REMPB on reflection from a reflecting grating. Electromagnetic nature of such interaction is explored via considering dependence of the degree of polarization of the reflected REMPB on its source and on the structure of the …

Passenger rail service is perceived to provide important benefits to Michigan communities. However, the extent of these benefits has never been quantified in a systematic way. The study reported on here involved the performance of a broad based assessment of the community level benefits of passenger rail serv ice. The main objective of the research project was to estimate the full range of these benefits at the community level, as opposed to at the state level. Benefits were estimated for individual travelers, Amtrak expenditures, and local businesses. This research indicates local communities currently realize $62.0 million annually in benefits. Additional …

More Than Just Biology: Creating An Informational Website For Teens On Sexuality And Lifelong Sexual Health, Sarah Cyr-Mutty

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“More Than Just Biology – Creating an informational website for teens on sexuality and lifelong sexual health” is the product of four weeks’ research in Amsterdam, NL on sexuality education and the use of the Internet as an educational tool for youth. The research defied a “Dutch approach” to sexuality education and used it to create a website for American teenagers to get confidential and accurate information regarding their sexual lives and health. Information was gathered primarily through personal interviews, as well as a review of existing literature on the subject. Through this research, it was found that the Dutch …

As Rivers Run Dry: A Study Of Global Freshwater Scarcity And Its Implications For Socio-Economic Development, Sophia Wenzlau Oct 2010

As Rivers Run Dry: A Study Of Global Freshwater Scarcity And Its Implications For Socio-Economic Development, Sophia Wenzlau

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Water scarcity is a serious problem—without adequate supplies of clean freshwater, there cannot be life. The direct and indirect costs of water scarcity are huge, including poor public health, gender inequality, and acute restrictions for economic development. Currently, around 20 percent of the global population lacks access to safe drinking water and 2.4 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities (UNEP Brief, 1). About 1.8 million people—most of them children less than five years old—die every year due to water-borne diseases from fecal pollution—the equivalent of about 15 killer tsunamis each year or 12 Boeing 747 crashes …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The world is suffering from an extreme global water crisis. 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to adequate clean water, and 2.6 billion people lack access to water and sanitation. Approximately 10 million deaths per year can be attributed to this water crisis; water-borne infectious diseases play a significant role in this death toll. Diarrhoeal disease accounts for 2.6 million deaths per year and is one of the leading causes of death in many developing countries.

We are entering a period of undeniable climate change which is bringing about more natural disasters and extreme weather events than ever …

Analysis Of Nonlinear Spectral Eddy-Viscosity Models Of Turbulence, Max Gunzburger, Eunjung Lee, Yuki Saka, Catalin Trenchea, Xiaoming Wang Oct 2010

Analysis Of Nonlinear Spectral Eddy-Viscosity Models Of Turbulence, Max Gunzburger, Eunjung Lee, Yuki Saka, Catalin Trenchea, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fluid turbulence is commonly modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations with a large Reynolds number. However, direct numerical simulations are not possible in practice, so that turbulence modeling is introduced. We study artificial spectral viscosity models that render the simulation of turbulence tractable. We show that the models are well posed and have solutions that converge, in certain parameter limits, to solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. We also show, using the mathematical analyses, how effective choices for the parameters appearing in the models can be made. Finally, we consider temporal discretizations of the models and investigate their stability. © 2009 Springer …

Gender-Separate Education: The Effects On Student Achievement & Self-Esteem On Economically Disadvantaged Public Middle School Students In Philadelphia, Heather M. O'Neill, Allison Guerin Oct 2010

Gender-Separate Education: The Effects On Student Achievement & Self-Esteem On Economically Disadvantaged Public Middle School Students In Philadelphia, Heather M. O'Neill, Allison Guerin

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

In 2003, three Philadelphia middle schools with similar demographics and failing student achievement levels were taken over by an educational management organization. Two were transformed into distinct single-sex academies within the original school buildings and a third remained coeducational. Students did not have the option where to attend, eliminating selection bias. Through funding from a Spencer Foundation grant, data was collected on 1,000 students for 2002-03 through 2004-05 to examine impacts of gender-segregation. We find students in single sex schools witness greater improvements in standardized test scores, with boys gaining the most, and no differences on Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale.

Developing Second Language Writing Through Scaffolding In The Zpd: A Magazine Project For An Authentic Audience, John W. Schwieter Oct 2010

Developing Second Language Writing Through Scaffolding In The Zpd: A Magazine Project For An Authentic Audience, John W. Schwieter

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

In the present study, Vygotsky’s (1978, 1986) sociocultural framework of the zone of proximal development (ZPD) and scaffolding writing (Bodrova & Leong, 1995, 1996; Ross, 1976) are used as the theoretical basis to study the development of second language writing. A course project is presented in which advanced English language learners of Spanish acted as authors and editors to create their own professional magazines for an authentic audience. In the project, each student authored four essays which went through four peer- and instructor-edited stages of scaffolding writing techniques. After each stage, ratings were given by the editors who also facilitated …

Non-Autonomous Periodic Systems With Allee Effects, Rafael Luís, Saber Elaydi, Henrique Oliveira Oct 2010

Non-Autonomous Periodic Systems With Allee Effects, Rafael Luís, Saber Elaydi, Henrique Oliveira

Mathematics Faculty Research

A new class of maps called unimodal Allee maps are introduced. Such maps arise in the study of population dynamics in which the population goes extinct if its size falls below a threshold value. A unimodal Allee map is thus a unimodal map with tree fixed points, a zero fixed point, a small positive fixed point, called threshold point, and a bigger positive fixed point, called the carrying capacity. In this paper the properties and stability of the three fixed points are studied in the setting of nonautonomous periodic dynamical systems or difference equations. Finally we investigate the bifurcation of …

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The response of stratospheric climate and circulation to increasing amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and ozone recovery in the twenty-first century is analyzed in simulations of 11 chemistry–climate models using near-identical forcings and experimental setup. In addition to an overall global cooling of the stratosphere in the simulations (0.59 ± 0.07 K decade−1 at 10 hPa), ozone recovery causes a warming of the Southern Hemisphere polar lower stratosphere in summer with enhanced cooling above. The rate of warming correlates with the rate of ozone recovery projected by the models and, on average, changes from 0.8 to 0.48 K decade …

What Does The Desert Say?: A Rhetorical Analysis Of "Desert Solitaire", John S. Farnsworth Oct 2010

What Does The Desert Say?: A Rhetorical Analysis Of "Desert Solitaire", John S. Farnsworth

Environmental Studies and Sciences

While Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire has suffered no dearth of critical at tention since its publication in 1968, most of the discourse concerning this work has taken the form of literary criticism, with an increasingly ecocritical focus having been attended to over the course of the past decade. Little, if anything, however, has been published critiquing Abbey's masterwork from the perspec tive of rhetorical analysis. Such analysis, I will contend in what follows, casts new light on the work, and is instrumental in appreciating the more polemic elements of the text. I begin, therefore, with the observation that the author …

Writing The Island, John S. Farnsworth Oct 2010

Writing The Island, John S. Farnsworth

Environmental Studies and Sciences

The historians may call this a failed expedition. For the first time, we didn’t complete a circumnavigation of Isla Espiritu Santo, an accomplishment that usually entails 50 miles of epic paddling in sea kayaks so loaded with food, water, and gear that it takes eight students to lift one. But in March 2010 it was not to be; El Norte, the bully of the Sea of Cortez, had nearly blown us off the beach, and we’d had to remain on the lee side of the island, roaming the canyons and diving the reefs because we couldn’t safely kayak the windward …

Standardised Library Instruction Assessment: An Institution-Specific Approach, Shannon M. Staley, Nicole A. Branch, Tom L. Hewitt

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Introduction. We explore the use of a psychometric model for locallyrelevant, information literacy assessment, using an online tool for standardised assessment of student learning during discipline-based library instruction sessions. Method. A quantitative approach to data collection and analysis was used, employing standardised multiple-choice survey questions followed by individual, cognitive interviews with undergraduate students. The assessment tool was administered to five general education psychology classes during library instruction sessions. Analysis. Descriptive statistics were generated by the assessment tool. Results. The assessment tool proved a feasible means of measuring student learning. While student scores improved on every survey question, there was uneven …
