Setting The Word Into Motion: Textual Visuality In The Bible Moralisée, Vienna Codex 2554, Eva Maria Raepple

Philosophy Scholarship

This article examines the relation between the biblical Word and visuality in one of the surviving early thirteenth century manuscripts of the Bible moraliseé, the codex Vindobonensis 2554 today housed in Vienna. The analysis focuses specifically on the relations between word and visuality. The goal is to investigate the vitality that may set the Word into motion. It is argued that the matrix of textual visuality in the Vienna codex 2554 is used as an effective tool that adds vitality to the biblical passages while simultaneously creating a firm hierarchy of representation and resemblances that enforces not only certain …

There’s nothing like a birthday, especially those that have special milestone significance…turning 30, reaching the age of 40, and then there’s 50. Some of you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those of you who don’t, will soon enough. These milestones provide opportunities to reflect—to think about the lives we’ve led and to consider whether there are changes to be made or to what extent we should “stay the course.”

Physics & Astronomy

[1] Recent modeling efforts have yielded varying and conflicting results regarding the possibility that Earth's magnetosphere is able to shield energetic particles of >10 MeV at lunar distances. This population of particles consists of galactic cosmic rays as well as energetic particles that are accelerated by solar flares and coronal mass ejections. The Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is in orbit about the Moon and is thus able to directly test these modeling results. Over the course of a month, CRaTER samples the upstream solar wind as well as various regions …

Three-Dimensional Reconnection And Relaxation Of Merging Spheromak Plasmas, Timothy G. Gray , '01, Vyacheslav S. Lukin , '00, Michael R. Brown, C. D. Cothran

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Plasma relaxation inside a highly conducting cylindrical boundary is studied both experimentally and computationally. Dynamics are initiated by the introduction of two equal helicity spheromaks at either end of the cylinder. In the experiment, dense, high-magnetic-flux spheromaks are injected into the flux conserving volume with magnetized plasma guns. In the simulation, identical spheromaks initially occupy both halves of the cylinder and a perturbation is introduced. Merging commences with a single three-dimensional null-point that moves radially out of the flux conserving volume at velocities up to 0.2 of the reconnection outflow velocity. Relaxation to the minimum energy state occurs in about …

Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) series

Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) is the concept that seeks to integrate short and long-term economic, social and environmental effects in all decision-making. The Western Australian Government is committed to the concepts of ESD and these principles are implicitly contained in the objectives of the Fisheries Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA).

Bridging The Gap: Identifying Social Factors That Affect The Knowledge Of Sexually Transmitted Infections And Use Of Prevention Methods In Young Women, Ariel Spigel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study investigates the social factors that affect the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) in young women, focusing on their knowledge of the subject and use of prevention methods in order to discover why STIs, though preventable, are still prevalent in the lives of young adults, and more often, young women. Sixty-one anonymous, closed questionnaires were distributed to female students of at least eighteen years at the Colegio Estadual Francisco da Conceição Menezes in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia, Brazil, and six structured interviews were conducted with students from the same pool. Results showed varying levels of knowledge, educational …

Algebraic Points Of Small Height Missing A Union Of Varieties, Lenny Fukshansky Oct 2010

Algebraic Points Of Small Height Missing A Union Of Varieties, Lenny Fukshansky

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Let K be a number field, Q, or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field, and let V be a subspace of KN where N≥ 2. Let ZK be a union of varieties defined over K such that V ⊈ ZK. We prove the existence of a point of small height in V \ ZK, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of the height of V and the degree of hypersurface containing ZK, where dependence on …

Foodshed Foundations: Law's Role In Shaping Our Food System's Future, Margaret Sova Mccabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[. . .] This symposium Article analyzes how we can rethink the architecture of law based on a foodshed model to provide a greater role for local, state, and regional government in the American food system. In turn, greater roles for different levels of government may help America achieve greater efficiencies in domestic food safety, nutrition and related public health issues, sustainability, and international trade.

Americans need a greater voice in the food system. The foodshed model is a powerful vehicle that allows us to conceptualize change, allowing greater citizen participation and a more nuanced approach to food policy. The …

Targeted Bayesian Learning, Ivan Diaz Munoz, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (van der Laan & Rubin 2006) is a loss-based semi-parametric estimation method that yields a substitution estimator of a target parameter of the probability distribution of the data that solves the efficient influence curve estimating equation, and thereby yields a double robust locally efficient estimator of the parameter of interest, under regularity conditions. The Bayesian paradigm is concerned with including the researcher’s prior uncertainty about the parameter through a prior distribution, which combined with the likelihood yields a posterior distribution for the parameter that reflects the researcher’s posterior uncertainty. In this paper, we present a way …

Global Stability Of An Sir Epidemic Model With Delay And General Nonlinear Incidence, C. Connell Mccluskey Oct 2010

Global Stability Of An Sir Epidemic Model With Delay And General Nonlinear Incidence, C. Connell Mccluskey

Mathematics Faculty Publications

An SIR model with distributed delay and a general incidence function is studied. Conditions are given under which the system exhibits threshold behaviour: the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0 < 1 and globally attracting if R0 = 1; if R0 > 1, then the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. The global stability proofs use a Lyapunov functional and do not require uniform persistence to be shown a priori. It is shown that the given conditions are satisfied by several common forms of the incidence function.
