Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns.

Interaction Of Atomic And Molecular Hydrogen With Tholin Surfaces At Low Temperatures, Gianfranco Vidali, Ling Li, Hui Zhao
Physics - All Scholarship
We study the interaction of atomic and molecular hydrogen with a surface of tholin, a man-made polymer considered to be an analogue of aerosol particles present in Titan's atmosphere, using thermal programmed desorption at low temperatures below 30 K. The results are fitted and analyzed using a fine-grained rate equation model that describes the diffusion, reaction and desorption processes. We obtain the energy barriers for diffusion and desorption of atomic and molecular hydrogen. These barriers are found to be in the range of 30 to 60 meV, indicating that atom/molecule-surface interactions in this temperature range are dominated by weak adsorption …

Background: A number of models and algorithms have been proposed in the past for gene regulatory network (GRN) inference; however, none of them address the effects of the size of time-series microarray expression data in terms of the number of time-points. In this paper, we study this problem by analyzing the behaviour of three algorithms based on information theory and dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) models. These algorithms were implemented on different sizes of data generated by synthetic networks. Experiments show that the inference accuracy of these algorithms reaches a saturation point after a specific data size brought about by …

A Predictive Model For Secondary Rna Structure Using Graph Theory And A Neural Network, Denise R. Koessler, Debra J. Knisley, Jeff Knisley, Teresa Haynes
ETSU Faculty Works
Background: Determining the secondary structure of RNA from the primary structure is a challenging computational problem. A number of algorithms have been developed to predict the secondary structure from the primary structure. It is agreed that there is still room for improvement in each of these approaches. In this work we build a predictive model for secondary RNA structure using a graph-theoretic tree representation of secondary RNA structure. We model the bonding of two RNA secondary structures to form a larger secondary structure with a graph operation we call merge. We consider all combinatorial possibilities using all possible tree inputs, …
Scoring Function To Predict Solubility Mutagenesis, Ye Tian, Christopher Deutsch, Bala Krishnamoorthy
Scoring Function To Predict Solubility Mutagenesis, Ye Tian, Christopher Deutsch, Bala Krishnamoorthy
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Mutagenesis is commonly used to engineer proteins with desirable properties not present in the wild type (WT) protein, such as increased or decreased stability, reactivity, or solubility. Experimentalists often have to choose a small subset of mutations from a large number of candidates to obtain the desired change, and computational techniques are invaluable to make the choices. While several such methods have been proposed to predict stability and reactivity mutagenesis, solubility has not received much attention. Results: We use concepts from computational geometry to define a three body scoring function that predicts the change in protein solubility due to …

A Narrative Study Of Perspectives Of Puerto Rican Doctoral Graduates, Doreen Rivera Rapp
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A review of the literature indicates that Latinos lag behind Whites and Blacks in college degree attainment. This educational disparity is of concern because Latinos are currently the largest minority group in the United States, and the Latino population is expected to increase exponentially in the future. College degree attainment for Latinos is imperative because statistics show an undeniable relationship between degree attainment and income level. In order to ensure the economic wellbeing of Latinos, it is important that Latinos persist through college degree programs. This is especially true for Puerto Ricans because they are the second largest Latino subgroup. …

Curvedland: An Applet For Illustrating Curved Geometry Without Embedding, Gary Felder, Stephanie Erickson
Physics: Faculty Publications
We have written a Java applet to illustrate the meaning of curved geometry. The applet provides a mapping interface similar to MapQuest or Google Maps; features include the ability to navigate through a space and place permanent point objects and/or shapes at arbitrary positions. The underlying two-dimensional space has a constant, positive curvature, which causes the apparent paths and shapes of the objects in the map to appear distorted in ways that change as you view them from different relative angles and distances.

Theoretical Studies Of Structure-Function Relationships In Kv Channels: Electrostatics Of The Voltage Sensor, Alexander Peyser
Theoretical Studies Of Structure-Function Relationships In Kv Channels: Electrostatics Of The Voltage Sensor, Alexander Peyser
Open Access Dissertations
Voltage-gated ion channels mediate electrical excitability of cellular membranes. Re- duced models of the voltage sensor (VS) of Kv channels produce insight into the electrostatic physics underlying the response of the highly positively charged S4 transmembrane domain to changes in membrane potential and other electrostatic parameters. By calculating the partition function computed from the electrostatic energy over translational and/or rotational degrees of freedom, I compute expectations of charge displacement, energetics, probability distributions of translation & rotation and Maxwell stress for arrangements of S4 positively charged residues and S2 & S3 negatively charged counter-charges; these computations can then be compared with …

We propose fast and scalable statistical methods for the analysis of hundreds or thousands of high dimensional vectors observed at multiple visits. The proposed inferential methods avoid the difficult task of loading the entire data set at once in the computer memory and use sequential access to data. This allows deployment of our methodology on low-resource computers where computations can be done in minutes on extremely large data sets. Our methods are motivated by and applied to a study where hundreds of subjects were scanned using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at two visits roughly five years apart. The original data …

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) produces precise measurements of the column average dry-air mole fractions of CO2, CO, CH4, N2O and H2O at a variety of sites worldwide. These observations rely on spectroscopic parameters that are not known with sufficient accuracy to compute total columns that can be used in combination with in situ measurements. The TCCON must therefore be calibrated to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in situ trace gas measurement scales. We present a calibration of TCCON data using WMO-scale instrumentation aboard aircraft that measured profiles over four TCCON stations during 2008 and 2009. These calibrations are …

Ytterbium Triflate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Alkoxy-Substituted Donor-Acceptor Cyclobutanes And Their Formal [4 + 2] Cycloaddition With Imines: Stereoselective Synthesis Of Piperidines., Mahmoud M Abd Rabo Moustafa, Brian L Pagenkopf
Chemistry Publications
A new synthesis of 2-alkoxy-1,1-cyclobutane diesters and their first use in dipolar cycloadditions is reported. Both the formation of the donor-acceptor cyclobutanes and their subsequent annulation with in situ formed imines are catalyzed by Yb(OTf)(3). Cyclobutanes with carbon donor groups give piperidines with high trans stereoselectivity.

Polymeric Monolithic Stationary Phases For Capillary Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Yuanyuan Li
Polymeric Monolithic Stationary Phases For Capillary Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Yuanyuan Li
Theses and Dissertations
Rigid poly[hydroxyethyl acrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate] (Poly(HEA-co-PEGDA) monoliths were synthesized inside 75-µm i.d. capillaries by one-step UV-initiated copolymerization using methanol and ethyl ether as porogens. The optimized monolithic column was evaluated for hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) of standard proteins. Six proteins were separated within 20 min with high resolution using a 20 min elution gradient, resulting in a peak capacity of 54. The performance of this monolithic column for HIC was comparable or superior to the performance of columns packed with small particles. Monoliths synthesized solely from PEGDA were also found to show excellent performance in HIC …
