Quantifying The Evolving Magnetic Structure Of Active Regions, Paul A. Conlon, R. T. James Mcateer, Peter T. Gallagher, Linda Fennell Oct 2010

Quantifying The Evolving Magnetic Structure Of Active Regions, Paul A. Conlon, R. T. James Mcateer, Peter T. Gallagher, Linda Fennell

Astronomy: Faculty & Staff Publications

The topical and controversial issue of parameterizing the magnetic structure of solar active regions has vital implications in the understanding of how these structures form, evolve, produce solar flares, and decay. This interdisciplinary and ill-constrained problem of quantifying complexity is addressed by using a two-dimensional wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) method to study the multifractal properties of active region photospheric magnetic fields. The WTMM method provides an adaptive space-scale partition of a fractal distribution, from which one can extract the multifractal spectra. The use of a novel segmentation procedure allows us to remove the quiet Sun component and reliably study …

From Walls To Steps: Using Online Automatic Homework Checking Tools To Improve Learning In Introductory Programming Courses, Dwayne Towell, Brent Reeves Oct 2010

From Walls To Steps: Using Online Automatic Homework Checking Tools To Improve Learning In Introductory Programming Courses, Dwayne Towell, Brent Reeves

School of Information Technology and Computing

We describe the motivation, design, and implementation of a web-based automatic homework checker for Programming I and Programming II courses. Motivated by a problem-based-learning approach, we redesigned our first course to have over 70 short programming assignments. The goal was to change conceptual "walls" into "steps", so that students would not feel overwhelmed at any point in time. At each step along the way, it must be clear where the student is and the next step must feel attainable. Over the last 3 years, we have learned much about proper "step-size" and sequencing of problems. We describe how current computer …

Pixel Based Note Taking Through Perceptual Structure Inference, Mitchell Kent Harris Oct 2010

Pixel Based Note Taking Through Perceptual Structure Inference, Mitchell Kent Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge workers need effective annotation tools to assimilate information. Unfortunately many digital annotators are limited in the range of document that they accept. Those that do accept many different documents do so by converting documents to images, thus losing any awareness about the original content of the document. We introduce a digital note taker that is both universal and content aware. By constructing a hierarchical context tree of document images, the structure of a document is inferred from the image. This hierarchical context tree is shown to be useful by demonstrating how it facilitates selection of document elements, reflowing documents …

Non-Invasive Prenatal Detection Of Trisomy 21 Using Tandem Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Sujana Ghanta, Michael Mitchell, Mary Ames, Mats Hidestrand, Pippa Simpson, Mary Goetsch, William Thilly, Craig Struble, Aoy Tomita-Mitchell

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background: Screening tests for Trisomy 21 (T21), also known as Down syndrome, are routinely performed for the majority of pregnant women. However, current tests rely on either evaluating non-specific markers, which lead to false negative and false positive results, or on invasive tests, which while highly accurate, are expensive and carry a risk of fetal loss. We outline a novel, rapid, highly sensitive, and targeted approach to non-invasively detect fetal T21 using maternal plasma DNA.

Methods and Findings: Highly heterozygous tandem Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequences on chromosome 21 were analyzed using High-Fidelity PCR and Cycling Temperature Capillary …

Characterization And Sensitivity Analysis Of Hyperelastic Materials In Biaxial Tension, Lowell Smoger Oct 2010

Characterization And Sensitivity Analysis Of Hyperelastic Materials In Biaxial Tension, Lowell Smoger

Theses

The focus of this study was to improve characterization of hyperelastic materials in biaxial tension through improved design and validation of an existing test fixture and specimen geometry. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis of the material properties to variations in selected test parameters was conducted to better understand material response. Misalignment and binding in the original tensile test fixture resulted in non-equibiaxial loading and inaccurate stress-strain data. Analysis and modification were required to improve accuracy and repeatability. Vector analysis of the link system and the Minimum Constraint Design method were used to achieve this aim. Based on a proposed set of …

Analyzing Multilevel Data: An Empirical Comparison Of Parameter Estimates Of Hierarchical Linear Modeling And Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Louis M. Rocconi Oct 2010

Analyzing Multilevel Data: An Empirical Comparison Of Parameter Estimates Of Hierarchical Linear Modeling And Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Louis M. Rocconi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

How college affects students is a central phenomenon of interest in higher education research. However, a major problem in assessing the influence of college on students is the methodological dilemmas due the multilevel nature of the majority of data used in such studies. Historically, higher education researchers have utilized the traditional linear model, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, to aid in their investigation of the influence of college on students. This traditional approach ignores the multilevel nature of the data which can cause a multitude of conceptual and statistical problems. Therefore, a statistical technique, such as hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), …

Dissipation Scales And Anomalous Sinks In Steady Two-Dimensional Turbulence, Eleftherios Gkioulekas Oct 2010

Dissipation Scales And Anomalous Sinks In Steady Two-Dimensional Turbulence, Eleftherios Gkioulekas

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In previous papers I have argued that the fusion rules hypothesis, which was originally introduced by L’vov and Procaccia in the context of the problem of three-dimensional turbulence, can be used to gain a deeper insight in understanding the enstrophy cascade and inverse energy cascade of two-dimensional turbulence. In the present paper, we show that the fusion rules hypothesis, combined with nonperturbative locality, itself a consequence of the fusion rules hypothesis, dictates the location of the boundary separating the inertial range from the dissipation range. In so doing, the hypothesis that there may be an anomalous enstrophy sink …

Application Of An Inverse-Hysteresis Iterative Control Algorithm For Afm Fabrication, Seth Ashley Oct 2010

Application Of An Inverse-Hysteresis Iterative Control Algorithm For Afm Fabrication, Seth Ashley

Theses and Dissertations

An iterative control algorithm (ICA) which uses an approximate inverse-hysteresis model is implemented to compensate for hysteresis to precisely fabricate features on a soft polymer substrate using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The AFM is an important instrument in micro/nanotechnology because of its ability to interrogate, manipulate, and fabricate objects at the micro/nanoscale. The AFM uses a piezoelectric actuator to position an AFM-probe tip relative to the sample surface in three dimensions. In particular, precision lateral control of the AFM-probe tip relative to the sample surface is needed to ensure high-performance operation of the AFM. However, precision lateral positioning of …

Measurement Of Sigma(Pp -> B Anti-B X) At \Sqrt(S)=7 Tev In The Forward Region, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, Alessandra Borgia

Physics - All Scholarship

Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns.

Transport And Metabolism Of Glucose In Intervertebral Disc, Alicia R. Jackson Oct 2010

Transport And Metabolism Of Glucose In Intervertebral Disc, Alicia R. Jackson

Open Access Dissertations

Low back pain is a major social and economic dilemma in the United States. Despite its high impact, the origins of low back remain unclear. Nonetheless, degenerative changes to the intervertebral discs (IVD) of the spine have been implicated as a possible source leading to pain. Poor nutritional supply to the IVD is believed to play a primary role in the pathophysiology of disc degeneration. Since the disc is avascular, vital nutrients, such as glucose, must be supplied by surrounding blood vessels. However, the transport and metabolic properties of glucose in the IVD have not been fully delineated. This knowledge …

Population Value Decomposition, A Framework For The Analysis Of Image Populations, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Sheng Luo, Vadim Zipunnikov Oct 2010

Population Value Decomposition, A Framework For The Analysis Of Image Populations, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Sheng Luo, Vadim Zipunnikov

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Images, often stored in multidimensional arrays are fast becoming ubiquitous in medical and public health research. Analyzing populations of images is a statistical problem that raises a host of daunting challenges. The most severe challenge is that data sets incorporating images recorded for hundreds or thousands of subjects at multiple visits are massive. We introduce the population value decomposition (PVD), a general method for simultaneous dimensionality reduction of large populations of massive images. We show how PVD can seamlessly be incorporated into statistical modeling and lead to a new, transparent and fast inferential framework. Our methodology was motivated by and …

Bedrock Erosion By Root Fracture And Tree Throw: A Coupled Biogeomorphic Model To Explore The Humped Soil Production Function And The Persistence Of Hillslope Soils, Emmanuel Gabet, Simon Mudd Oct 2010

Bedrock Erosion By Root Fracture And Tree Throw: A Coupled Biogeomorphic Model To Explore The Humped Soil Production Function And The Persistence Of Hillslope Soils, Emmanuel Gabet, Simon Mudd

Faculty Publications

In 1877, G. K. Gilbert reasoned that bedrock erosion is maximized under an intermediate soil thickness and declines as soils become thinner or thicker. Subsequent analyses of this “humped” functional relationship proposed that thin soils are unstable and that perturbations in soil thickness would lead to runaway thinning or thickening of the soil. To explore this issue, we developed a numerical model that simulates the physical weathering of bedrock by root fracture and tree throw. The coupled biogeomorphic model combines data on conifer population dynamics, rootwad volumes, tree throw frequency, and soil creep from the Pacific Northwest (USA). Although not …
