The Relationship Of Personal And Professional Teacher Diversity Belief Typologies To Average Student Mathematics Achievement In Middle Schools Serving The Diverse Populations Of North Georgia, Xiomara Reid Romine

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Prior research has indicated that teacher beliefs can negatively affect teacher behavior. These beliefs often include unrecognized prejudices/biases regarding diversity including race, class and gender, which can lead to learning, communication and achievement issues between diverse students and their teachers. The main purpose of this research was to determine the relationship of both personal and professional teacher diversity belief typologies to student achievement in middle level math class rooms in North Georgia in 2009. The study attempted to answer the following research questions: 1. What were the personal/professional diversity belief typologies for middle level teachers who teach diverse populations? 2. …

Parent Engagement And Cultural Capital: Negotiating Culture In A Multilingual/Multiethnic School, Paula Andrea Echeverri-Sucerquia

Dissertations

This study explored how a multicultural/multilingual school negotiated culture with limited English proficient (LEP) students' families, particularly in the context of parent involvement activities. In order to understand how such negotiation of culture occurred, the researcher focused on the perspectives that school administrators, teachers and parents of students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program had on the education of LEP students and their parents' involvement in school-organized activities. It also focused on the participants' understandings of cultural capital and the extent to which the school builds on immigrant /sojourner families' knowledge and culture to support their children's …

Three Case Studies Of National Narratives In Central American Art, Gustavo Larach Aug 2010

Three Case Studies Of National Narratives In Central American Art, Gustavo Larach

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis explores the ways in which two Central American artists of the 20th century conceived of their own emerging nations through works of art that present national narratives. The first artist discussed is the Nicaraguan Armando Morales (b. 1927). This discussion centers on Moraless lithographic portfolio of seven images titled La saga de Sandino, which recounts the rebellion led by Augusto César Sandino (1895-1934) between 1926 and 1933. The second artist discussed is the Honduran Arturo López Rodezno (1908-75), who set out to produce, between the 1940's and 1960's, murals that focused on the figures of ancient Maya rulers …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In Robert Olen Butler’s A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, the collection focuses on the Vietnamese that emigrated to America because of the Vietnam War. Through these short stories, Butler illustrates the physical displacement of the characters, and their new role within their new home, America, as the Other.

Throughout examining the physical displacement and the characters’ status as the Other, this thesis focuses on the after effects of the Vietnam War. Each character attempts to cope with their displacement and Other-ness through a variety of methods including exploitation of their Other-ness for monetary gains, using their sexuality to …

Life Beyond The Scarlet Letter, Shauna Ciarco Demarco Aug 2010

Life Beyond The Scarlet Letter, Shauna Ciarco Demarco

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter recounts the events that occur during a time span of seven years that follows an adulterous encounter between two of the novel’s three protagonists. This act took place before the novel begins and details of it are never disclosed to the reader. The novel’s focus remains fixed on the events that occur after the symbol of this sin, the scarlet letter “A,” is placed upon the breast of Hester Prynne. While Hester boldly and steadfastly confronts a new life as a scorned woman and single mother, the father of her child, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, is …

The Struggle Between The Self And Not-Self : The Influence Of Zen Buddhism And The Upanishads In Yeats’S Later Poetry, William Paul Kadar Aug 2010

The Struggle Between The Self And Not-Self : The Influence Of Zen Buddhism And The Upanishads In Yeats’S Later Poetry, William Paul Kadar

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis will examine questions about how William Butler Yeats was influenced by his exposure to eastern philosophical thinking. Yeats's work prior to 1927, before his significant and rather esoteric tome A Vision, could classify him as a proto-Romantic, but it was his work after this where we see the influence of an eastern way of thinking. Specifically, this thesis will focus on Yeats's poetry from 1927 on, with references to some of his earlier work to demonstrate how Yeats had already discovered some of the basic tenets of eastern thinking without having studied it. The initial analysis will locus …

Due to the understanding that literacy development is based on an individuals discourse, and is acquired through social interactions with others it is essential to look at literacy acquisition through the perspective of the home environment. How does a child’s home environment impact the development of a child’s literacy acquisition? By studying the home life of five student participants and five parent participants, it became clear that parents are the greatest influence on a child’s ability to read and write. Inevitably, there is a continued link between home and school and teachers must take this knowledge and help support parents …

Conceptual Understanding And Retention Of Vocabulary For Visual Learners, Nicki Stocking Aug 2010

Conceptual Understanding And Retention Of Vocabulary For Visual Learners, Nicki Stocking

Education Masters

This research paper investigates methods that promote conceptual understanding and retention of middle school, content area vocabulary for visual learners. Existing research suggests the methods of social interaction, visuals, word manipulation, contextual analysis, authentic connections, and self-selection to significantly influence vocabulary development. These methods were tested within “The Circular Vocabulary Strategy” to determine their effectiveness. Authentic connections and social interaction were found to most significantly create conceptual understanding and retention, while self-selection, word manipulation, and visuals increased motivation and promoted task manageability; contextual analysis acted as a guide in understanding, and the unintentionally examined method of repetition aided in information …

Adjustments In Inter-Cultural Communication Of Expatriate And Host National In Local Operation, Hanna Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Due to the global expansion of international hotel chains into culturally isolated countries, such as China, many hotels are in need of qualified staffs in local operation where a strong culture exists. When expatriate managers are sent abroad for overseas assignments, they are often confronted with the conflicts that are caused by inter-cultural differences between expatriates and host nationals. This paper examines several aspects of cultural and interpersonal issues involved in the conflicts, and seeks to determine any necessary adjustment from the information gathered by telephone interviews with the current expatriate managers in Beijing, China. Furthermore, the study discusses essential …

Multiform Segregation In The Context Of The Urban Crises In Las Vegas And Los Angeles, 1930 - 1980, Colin M. Fitzgerald Aug 2010

Multiform Segregation In The Context Of The Urban Crises In Las Vegas And Los Angeles, 1930 - 1980, Colin M. Fitzgerald

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Multiform segregation in the context of the urban crises was a complex socio-historical phenomenon. The primary focus of this study addresses racial segregation in at least three basic societal areas: housing, employment, and education. Through the spatial separation of multiple ethnoracial groups such as African Americans and Mexican Americans, multiform segregation precipitated the urban crises. In the 50-year period this study covers, Las Vegas and Los Angeles sustained a two-tiered class system according to the prevailing racial attitudes of each city's business elite. As a resort city, Las Vegas could not endure ethnoracial tensions while Los Angeles' industrial base provided …

The Live Experience Of Non-Degree Learners From A Time Modified Traditional Baccalaureate In Nursing Program, Stephanie S. Deboor

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

By the year 2016, it is projected that a million new and replacement nurses will be needed throughout the United States. The traditional 4-year baccalaureate program alone cannot adequately sustain this demand. The immediacy of the current nursing shortage demands our educational systems respond by building and maintaining a workforce that is sufficient to support the health care needs of our society. In an attempt to meet this challenge, nursing schools around the country began exploring the option of creating accelerated programs for those who already possess a bachelor's degree in another field without compromising the integrity and quality of …

Tongueless: Representation Of The Mentally Disabled And The Novel, Brent Walter Cline Aug 2010

Tongueless: Representation Of The Mentally Disabled And The Novel, Brent Walter Cline

Dissertations

This study examines the representation of the mentally disabled in the novel for two related outcomes. The first is to prove that the representation of the mentally disabled is not merely a subset of the representation of the disabled in general. This is intended less as a political statement as it is a literary one. Acknowledging and building off the work of writers in disability studies such as David Mitchell, Sharon Snyder, and Tobin Siebers who concentrate on the body of the disabled, this study shows that attempts to represent the mentally disabled are fundamentally different than those who are …

Inferring Rules From Sound: The Role Of Domain-Specific Knowledge In Speech And Music Perception, Aaronell Shaila Matta Aug 2010

Inferring Rules From Sound: The Role Of Domain-Specific Knowledge In Speech And Music Perception, Aaronell Shaila Matta

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Speech and music are two forms of complex auditory structure that play fundamental roles in everyday human experience and require certain basic perceptual and cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, when attempting to infer patterns from sequential auditory input, human listeners may use the same information differently depending on whether a sound is heard in a linguistic vs. musical context. The goal of these studies was to examine the role of domain-specific knowledge in auditory pattern perception. Specifically, the study examined the inference of "rules" in novel sound sequences that contained patterns of spectral structure (speech or instrument timbre) and fundamental frequency (pitch). …

Examining The Inner Experience Of Left-Handers Using Descriptive Experience Sampling, Aadee Mizrachi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Research suggests that there are anatomical asymmetries of the human brain in relation to hand preference. In addition, left-handedness has been related to a wide range of psychological and physical problems. Despite these relationships, little is known about the inner experience of left-handers. The present study used Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) to explore the inner experience of 6 left-handed participants. Descriptive Experience Sampling is a nonquantitative sampling method designed to explore and describe inner experience. Undergraduate psychology students were recruited from UNLV to participate in the study. Recruitment consisted of three phases: screening, qualification, and sampling. Students who reported writing …

Psychological Assessment In Vocational Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Exploration Of Acculturation Assessment And Clinician Testing Practices, Oscar A. Donoso

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The vocational rehabilitation (VR) system, which provides services to people with disabilities to gain employment, often requires psychological testing to determine client access to services and vocational planning. Cultural bias inherent in standardized tests and inappropriate administration of tests can lead to invalid test results. Assessment of acculturation and test adaptations have been suggested as methods of cultural bias remediation. This study examined the testing practices of 25 psychologists who test VR clients via telephone interview. The study explored psychologists (a) clinicians’ definitions/conceptualizations of acculturation, (b) clinicians’ perceptions of the role of acculturation in the testing process for clients, (c) …

The Morphology Of Nouns In The Ugoroŋmo Language (Arara Of Pará), Shirley Dias Cardoso De Souza

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I describe the morphology of nouns in the Ugoroŋmo language (Arara of Pará), which is spoken by just over three hundred people. The Ugoroŋmo people live on the bank of the Iriri river, in two villages (Laranjal and Cachoeira Seca) in the state of Pará, Brazil.

The nouns of this language can be divided in three main groups: those that are not inflected for possession, those that may be inflected for possession, and those that must be inflected for possession (inherently possessed nouns). Possession is marked by two affixes: a possessor prefix and a possessive suffix. Inherently …

Pattern Recognition For Fault Detection, Classification, And Localization In Electrical Power Systems, Qais Hashim Alsafasfeh Aug 2010

Pattern Recognition For Fault Detection, Classification, And Localization In Electrical Power Systems, Qais Hashim Alsafasfeh

Dissertations

The longer it takes to identify and repair a fault, the more damage may result in the electrical power system, especially in periods of peak loads, which could lead to the collapse of the system, causing the power outage to extend for a longer period and larger parts of the electrical network. Reducing the outage time and immediate restoration of service can be achieved if the fault type and location are determined in a timely and precise manner.

An integrated algorithm that is based on generating unique signatures from the electric current signal to detect, classify, and localize a fault …

An Ardent Flame: Witness To Distant Suffering, Human Rights And Unworthy Victims In The Coverage By The New York Times And Two Journals Of The Religious Left Of The 1980s Civil Wars In El Salvador And Nicaragua, Charles A. Flowerday Aug 2010

An Ardent Flame: Witness To Distant Suffering, Human Rights And Unworthy Victims In The Coverage By The New York Times And Two Journals Of The Religious Left Of The 1980s Civil Wars In El Salvador And Nicaragua, Charles A. Flowerday

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Scholars have investigated witness to distant suffering (WTDS) almost entirely in visual media. This study examines it in print. This form of reporting will be examined in two publications of the religious left as contrasted with the New York Times. The thesis is that, more than any technology, WTDS consists of the journalist’s moral commitment and narrative skills and the audience’s analytical resources and trust. In the religious journals, liberation theology provides the moral commitment, the writers and editors the narrative skills and trust and the special vision of the newly empowered poor the analytical foundation. In bearing witness to …

Freedom In Middle French Enlightenment : Interpreted Through A Picturesque Garden., Ning Jia 1977- Aug 2010

Freedom In Middle French Enlightenment : Interpreted Through A Picturesque Garden., Ning Jia 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freedom is a critical concept that helps shape the discourse of modern society and corresponding thoughts about people's private, public, cultural and spiritual lives. Standing at the fountainhead of the modern era, the Enlightenment was a critical period when this concept was defined, analyzed and debated in modern terminology with modern questions directed at modern problems. However, despite its importance, scholars in the twentieth century have disagreed about what to make of the Enlightenment liberal tradition. What was not fully discussed were the cultural sentiments and artistic expressions that interacted with the intellectual and political domains. To complement this, this …

"Civilized My Syphilized Yarbles": Culture, Economy, And Deviant Youth Subcultures In Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange, Emily Joy Carpenter Aug 2010

"Civilized My Syphilized Yarbles": Culture, Economy, And Deviant Youth Subcultures In Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange, Emily Joy Carpenter

Master's Theses

This thesis utilizes Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange to develop a new discussion concerning the impact of the emergence of youth subculture on society in England in the 1950s. Youth subcultures like the Nadsats and the Teddy Boys developed a new style that undermined the social taboos, and in doing so, attempted to create a sense of identity that was separated from their parents and existing forms of both high and low cultures. However, instead of transcending these sources of authority and identity, the language and style of these new subcultures actually only provided the illusion of difference from society. …

A Preliminary Study On Effects Of Graphic Organizers On Reading Comprehension, Trang Phan Aug 2010

A Preliminary Study On Effects Of Graphic Organizers On Reading Comprehension, Trang Phan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study investigates whether Graphic Organizers (GOs) are effective for various groups of undergraduate students at the University of Texas-Pan American on their reading comprehension. Thirty-five research participants were classified into groups by their language background (NSE, G 1.5 and ESLLs); levels of reading proficiency (low, middle, high); and levels of graphic skills (low, middle, high). The findings are based on between- and within-group comparisons of mean scores in the pretest and the posttest taken by the students. The GO tasks scores helped to consider correlations between students’ levels of graphic skills and their reading comprehension performance. Results revealed GOs …

Automatic Generation Of Semantic Fields For Annotating Web Images, Gang Wang, Tat Seng Chua, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yong Cheng Wang Aug 2010

Automatic Generation Of Semantic Fields For Annotating Web Images, Gang Wang, Tat Seng Chua, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yong Cheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The overwhelming amounts of multimedia contents have triggered the need for automatically detecting the semantic concepts within the media contents. With the development of photo sharing websites such as Flickr, we are able to obtain millions of images with usersupplied tags. However, user tags tend to be noisy, ambiguous and incomplete. In order to improve the quality of tags to annotate web images, we propose an approach to build Semantic Fields for annotating the web images. The main idea is that the images are more likely to be relevant to a given concept, if several tags to the image belong …

Fuzzy Logic Approach To Stability Control, Jeffery Anderson Aug 2010

Fuzzy Logic Approach To Stability Control, Jeffery Anderson

All Theses

Traditional Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for automobiles is usually accomplished through the use of estimated vehicle dynamics from simplified models. Starting with the conventional two degree-of-freedom vehicle model, one can estimate the vehicle states from the driver steering input. From this estimate, vehicle sideslip angle can be found and this is generally used with a threshold value to initiate a control action. The input/output relationship of the model depends heavily on the accuracy of the parameters used and various means to correct model inaccuracies. Specifically, these models depend on the tire cornering stiffness which is prone to change with age …

A Linguistic Analysis Of The Entrepreneurial Pitch, Laura Cunningham Aug 2010

A Linguistic Analysis Of The Entrepreneurial Pitch, Laura Cunningham

All Theses

An entrepreneur faces many challenges in the quest to bring an idea to fruition, and the first step in gaining financial support most commonly comes in the form of a pitch. The goal is always ultimately to persuade investors in the validity and profitability of a product or idea. A wealth of information currently exists in helping entrepreneurs create pitch content as well as giving advice on presentation skills. While this information is important for consideration, the vast majority of available knowledge hovers in the intuitive realm.
Little to no quantitative, academic research exists on the actual use of language …
