Paper Communicating Without Words: Focus On Malaysians, Ngan Ling Wong, Ching Hei Kuang, Maya Khemlani David
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Japan is a socially constructed society with group-orientation and social interdependence play an important role in Japan. Communication without words (silence) is possible and preferable (Wong, 2005). For instance keeping quiet to show deference or respect to others or, to maintain harmony in certain situation; are highly valued in Japanese society. Is silence a salient feature in discourse among the various ethnic groups in multiracial Malaysia? This is the focus of this study. This study looks at how the three dominant ethnic groups of Malaysia view ‘silence’ as a tool in communication. Data is analyzed using SPSS and findings are …

Linguistic Accommodation: Perception Of Malaysian Lawyers, Maya Khemlani David, Kah Hui Gan, Yoong David, Balbir Singh
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Language Accommodation is “we adjust our communicational behavior to maintain integrity, distance or identity” (Giles and Coupland,1991:66). Do lawyers shift their discourse norms in order to obtain the information required from witnesses in a courtroom? In this study, 24 lawyers were interviewed to elicit the strategies and discourse norms used when questioning the elderly, minors, women and uneducated. The findings are discussed. This is part of a larger study where courtroom discourse is observed to determine if the perceptions of the lawyers are realized in authentic settings. Keywords: accommodation, courtroom, discourse

Based on this premise, this paper discussed whether blogs can be viewed as a source for issues identification in a research study. The authors discuss blogging as indicator of social thought and practice, the increased credibility of bloggers’ discourse within cyber communities, and the reliability of blogs as an Internet research tool.
Linguistic Manifestations In The Commercialisation Of Japanese Animation And Comics, D.S.C. Yoong, M.K. David
Linguistic Manifestations In The Commercialisation Of Japanese Animation And Comics, D.S.C. Yoong, M.K. David
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In today’s economic climate, capitalism is a central ideology that governs the market world. And this is no exception in the contemporary Japanese animation and comics (anime and manga) industry. Animators and artists have to evolve to meet the demands of the audience who are becoming more intellectually complex. To satisfy these needs, animators and artists have to use more sophisticated linguistic means. Fairclough’s (1995) who uses Foucault’s (1993) order of discourse refers to the ordered sets of discourse practices found in social domains, that is, the nexus of practices representing different discourses. For instance, in contemporary anime and manga, …

Biologically Inspired Computing: The Darpa Synapse Program & The Hierarchical Temporal Memory, Dan Hammerstrom
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
This presentation provides an update on biologically inspired computation. In particular, it focuses on two important developments in this area, the DARPA SyNAPSE program (Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics) and the HTM (Hierarchical Temporal Memory) being developed by Numenta.
The SyNAPSE Program’s ultimate goal is to build a low-power, compact electronic chip combining novel analog circuit design and a neuroscience-inspired architecture that can address a wide range of cognitive abilities: perception, planning, decision making and motor control. According to DARPA program manager Todd Hylton, “Our research progress in this area is unprecedented, No suitable electronic synaptic device that …
Grammatical Tense Deficits In Children With Sli And Nonspecific Language Impairment: Relationships With Nonverbal Iq Over Time, Mabel L. Rice
Grammatical Tense Deficits In Children With Sli And Nonspecific Language Impairment: Relationships With Nonverbal Iq Over Time, Mabel L. Rice
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The relationship between children’s language acquisition and their nonverbal intelligence has a long tradition of scientific inquiry. Current attention focuses on the use of nonverbal IQ level as an exclusionary criterion in the definition of specific language impairment (SLI). Grammatical tense deficits are known as a clinical marker of SLI, but the relationship with nonverbal intelligence below the normal range has not previously been systematically studied. This study documents the levels of grammatical tense acquisition (for third-person singular -s, regular and irregular past tense morphology) in a large, epidemiologically ascertained sample of kindergarten children that comprises 4 groups: …
Once Upon A Time In Law: Myth, Metaphor, And Authority, Linda H. Edwards
Once Upon A Time In Law: Myth, Metaphor, And Authority, Linda H. Edwards
Scholarly Works
We have long accepted the role of narrative in fact statements and jury arguments, but in the inner sanctum of analyzing legal authority? Surely not. Yet cases, statutes, rules, and doctrines all have stories of their own. When we talk about legal authority, using our best formal logic, we are actually swimming in a sea of narrative, oblivious to the water around us. As the old Buddhist saying goes, "We don’t know who discovered the ocean, but it probably wasn’t a fish."
This article teases out several familiar archetypes hidden in discussions of cases and statutes. In the midst of …

Are Legislation And Rules A Problem In Law? Thoughts On The Work Of Joseph Vining, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
Are Legislation And Rules A Problem In Law? Thoughts On The Work Of Joseph Vining, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
Working Paper Series
Written for a conference at Villanova Law School held to celebrate and explore the work of Joseph Vining over forty years, this paper considers the adequacy of Vining’s phenomenology of law. Specifically, it inquires into the accuracy of Vining’s startling claims that “legislation is a problem in law, not central to law” and “rules are nowhere to be found” in law. The argument of the paper is that when -- but only when -- law is understood to be an ordinance of reason in the mind of him or them who have care of the community, for the common good, …

Against Hedonist Interpretations Of Plato's Protagoras, J. Clerk Shaw
Against Hedonist Interpretations Of Plato's Protagoras, J. Clerk Shaw
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, I adapt one of the pro-hedonist strategies to anti-hedonist ends. Just as some prohedonists insist that Plato’s arguments against hedonism elsewhere do not touch the actual theory found in the Protagoras (again, PH), I argue that the most natural reading of PH is inconsistent with views found in purportedly earlier dialogues (especially the Apology and Crito) as well as in purportedly later dialogues (such as the Gorgias, Phaedo, and Republic). In section 1, I argue that PH focuses entirely on bodily goods and bads.11 Then, in section 2, I argue that this makes the relationship between virtue …
What Drives The International Transfer Of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies? Empirical Evidence From Patent Data, Matthieu Glachant, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Yann Ménière
What Drives The International Transfer Of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies? Empirical Evidence From Patent Data, Matthieu Glachant, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Yann Ménière
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Using patent data from 66 countries for the period 1990–2003, we characterize the factors which promote or hinder the international diffusion of climate-friendly technologies on a global scale. Regression results show that technology-specific capabilities of the recipient countries are determinant factors. In contrast, the general level of education is less important. We also show that restrictions to international trade—e.g., high tariff rates—and lax intellectual property regimes negatively influence the international diffusion of patented knowledge. A counter-intuitive result is that barriers to foreign direct investments can promote transfers. We discuss different possible interpretations.

Verbal Creativity, Mate Value, And Sexual Selection, Ethan White
Verbal Creativity, Mate Value, And Sexual Selection, Ethan White
Psychology ETDs
The present series of studies examine links between creativity and intelligence with dating and sexual behavior from an evolutionary perspective to better understand the function of human creativity. In three studies, participants (N = 65, 225, 142) completed intelligence tests, male and female mate value surveys, and written creativity tasks. Analysis of the data suggests that creativity does not correlate with sexual partner number but it does correlate with self-assessed dating success and high partner quality, particularly in an older sample.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information is a key element for decision making and development. People need information to make the best use of the resources and solve problems. In Bangladesh, most people (80 percent) live in villages and Community Information Service (CIS) facilities remain low. Different organizations provide information services but these services are not always made in accordance with ommunity needs. This article discusses initiatives taken in Bangladesh and explores how public libraries can play a key role in developing CIS.

Multicultural Education For Rural Schools: Creating Relevancy In Rural America, Kristine Reed
Multicultural Education For Rural Schools: Creating Relevancy In Rural America, Kristine Reed
The Rural Educator
The mobility of capital today has meant that unprecedented numbers of low-wage, low-skill jobs continue to be created in the nation's rural areas, and these jobs are often filled by culturally and linguistically diverse individuals. As a consequence, many rural areas are becoming just as diverse today as urban areas. The changing demographics have prompted efforts to incorporate multicultural education in to the curriculum of schools where ethnic diversity exists. However, research suggests that rural schools in homogenous populations are more likely to hold negative views of multicultural education. This article examines the history of multicultural education and the many …
