Educating The Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Non-Urban Population: Three Cost-Effective Strategies, Derry L. Stufft, Rebecca Brogadir
Educating The Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Non-Urban Population: Three Cost-Effective Strategies, Derry L. Stufft, Rebecca Brogadir
The Rural Educator
The number of immigrants who do not speak English proficiently has grown rapidly in American schools. While the immigrant population is growing, the proportion of first and second-generation immigrants (the children of immigrants) is simultaneously multiplying. As the U.S. population grows more varied, public schools are faced with the challenge of meeting the needs of an increasing population of culturally and linguistically diverse students. The researchers propose three cost-effective and closely linked strategies for principals to facilitate the education of the increasingly diverse population in non-urban schools.

An Experimental Investigation Of Variation In Modern Hebrew, Michal Temkin Martinez
An Experimental Investigation Of Variation In Modern Hebrew, Michal Temkin Martinez
Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab
This paper reports the results of an experimental rating task testing the acceptability of variation in Modern Hebrew spirantization. Modern Hebrew spirantization is manifested by the alternation of the stops [p], [b], and [k] with their
fricative counterparts [f], [v], and [x], in which fricatives occur post-vocalically and root-finally, and stops occur elsewhere, as in (1).
(1) /p/ to [f] /pgS/ [lifgoS] [pagaS] ‘to meet’
/b/ to [v] /bgd/ [livgod] [bagad] ‘to betray’
/k/ tp [x] /ktb/ [lixtov] [katav] ‘to write’
Due to historical sound mergers and more recent borrowings, there are acoustically identical stops and fricatives that do not …
African-American Women's Journey To Academia And Their Experiences As Occupational Therapy Professors, Janan Daniel
African-American Women's Journey To Academia And Their Experiences As Occupational Therapy Professors, Janan Daniel
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The 2004 National Study of Post Secondary Faculty reported that in the fall of 2003 African-American female faculty made up only 6.4% of full time faculty at colleges and universities offering doctoral degrees and 7.4% at non-doctoral four-year institutions (Zimbler, 2004). These figures indicated that African-American female faculty composed significantly less than half of the fulltime faculty population at all four-year institutions in the US. This percentage reflects the situation that African-American women faculty members find themselves in at predominately while universities: a minority culture in the academic world. It is no surprise then that women faculty of color experience …
Individuals With Hearing Impairment In Positions Of Leadership, Josiah L. Osburn
Individuals With Hearing Impairment In Positions Of Leadership, Josiah L. Osburn
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This investigation examines scholarly literature in the study of the deaf and hard of hearing. The purpose of this examination is to locate the literature that focuses on hearing impairments (HI), and to identify methods or procedures that focus on individuals with hearing impairments in positions of leadership. During this investigation it was found that there is no abundance of literature that specifically focused on the study of individuals with hearing impairments in the positions of leadership. The study then shifted its focus to related studies within the field of hearing impairment that were relevant to understanding the challenges that …
An Empirical Assessment Of Administrative Skill Sets In Health Care Delivery Systems Of Ghana, Mildred Mcclarty
An Empirical Assessment Of Administrative Skill Sets In Health Care Delivery Systems Of Ghana, Mildred Mcclarty
McNair Scholars Research Journal
In a country with 22 million people, Ghana faces inadequacies of staffing and on-site resources that are typical of sub-Saharan Africa. While the majority of the nation's populations still live in rural areas, health and human services are concentrated in the cities. These hospitals and clinics are in poor repair and maintenance is a challenge; managers need to cope with inadequate resources and nearly unlimited demands. Ghanaian health administrators are responsible for the general and medical administration of their facilities. The current training for such positions comes in the form of a master's degree and a one year placement in …

The Anchor, Volume 123.14: February 10, 2010, Hope College
The Anchor: 2010
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
Flamenco And Its Gitanos An Investigation Of The Paradox Of Andalusia: History, Politics And Dance Art, Rosamaria Cisneros-Kostic
Flamenco And Its Gitanos An Investigation Of The Paradox Of Andalusia: History, Politics And Dance Art, Rosamaria Cisneros-Kostic
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Andalusia, Spain is considered the birthplace of flamenco. The art form not only embodies but represents the complex, multifaceted Andalusian identity. The southern region is a land of contradictions which includes the Gitano/Roma culture. The Spanish Gitano community laid the foundation for what we now call flamenco. The amalgamation of the cultures which existed in Spain informed the genre. These influences are explored with a thorough analysis of the of the Gitano/Roma nation. I document their journey from India to Spain and unravel the core elements of their identity. I focus on flamenco history and break down the song, guitar …

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
IRRATIONAL AND VISIONARY IMAGERY IN CANTE JONDO AND THE NEO-POPULAR POETRY OF FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA AND RAFAEL ALBERTI BY DAVID A. BRIGGS B.A., Romance Languages and Literature, Boston University, 1964 M.A., Spanish, The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 2002 Ph.D., Spanish and Portuguese, The University of New Mexico, 2009 ABSTRACT Spanish poet Rafael Alberti of the Generation of 27 claimed that 'Surrealism had been practiced in Spain since time immemorial as part of the tradition of popular song and folk poetry' (Rafael Alberti qtd. in Harris 34). What is it that permits applying an early twentieth-century term, 'Surrealism' to the …
An Analysis Of The Sexual Dimorphism Of Hands : Atractiveness, Symmetry And Person Perception, Laura Kristi Dane
An Analysis Of The Sexual Dimorphism Of Hands : Atractiveness, Symmetry And Person Perception, Laura Kristi Dane
Psychology ETDs
Like faces, hands and forearms may provide cues to quality and sex-typical hormone exposure used in mate choice. To date second-to-fourth digit ratio is the only measure that has been used to evaluate hand attractiveness. Two sexually dimorphic components were extracted from measurements taken on 62 male and 68 female hands and forearms. These components were combined to create an objective hand masculinity index. Sex-typical scores on this objective measure were associated with sexually dimorphic facial features, greater symmetry, sex typical 2D:4D (low for men and high for women) in Anglo participants and low finger ridge counts in both sexes. …
Automated Demand Response Applied To A Set Of Commercial Buildings, Donald Lincoln
Automated Demand Response Applied To A Set Of Commercial Buildings, Donald Lincoln
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Commercial facility demand response refers to voluntary actions by customers that change their consumption of electric power in response to price signals, incentives, or directions from grid operators at times of high wholesale market prices or when electric system reliability is jeopardized. Energy management in a commercial facility can be segregated into two areas: energy efficiency and demand response. This dissertation assesses both in two commercial facilities: one designed and constructed prior to the development of demand response principles and the second designed and constructed with modern energy controls and energy efficient materials. The energy evaluation identified opportunities for energy …
Formulaic Language And Adjective Categories In Eight Centuries Of The Spanish Expression Of 'Becoming' /Quedar(Se)/ + Adj, Damián Wilson
Formulaic Language And Adjective Categories In Eight Centuries Of The Spanish Expression Of 'Becoming' /Quedar(Se)/ + Adj, Damián Wilson
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The purpose of this study is to track the diachronic development of exemplar clusters formed by the adjectives in the Spanish expression of becoming quedar(se) + ADJ (e.g. quedar(se) solo to be left alone', quedar(se) espantado 'to get scared'). This approach applies the same system of analysis used by Bybee & Eddington (2006) in their synchronic study of four verb + adjective combinations used to denote a change of state (ponerse + ADJ, hacerse + ADJ, quedarse + ADJ, and volverse + ADJ). Although there are diachronic studies that follow the development of constructions employing usage-based approaches (Israel 1996), and …
White Bodies, Black Gaze: Constructions Of White Masculinity In White-Male Elite Discourses On Leadership And Diversity, Christopher Brown
White Bodies, Black Gaze: Constructions Of White Masculinity In White-Male Elite Discourses On Leadership And Diversity, Christopher Brown
Communication ETDs
This study examines white-male elite understandings of diversity and leadership to consider possibilities for exploring articulations of white masculinity. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with white-male leaders in their organizations who by virtue of their race, gender, class, and education, exercise much power and control in their organization. I used grounded theory methodology to highlight the communication strategies that white-male elites employed when talking about leadership and diversity. Techniques in grounded theory methodology yielded concepts, descriptors, and semantic moves that were articulated to intersecting discourses of race, gender, and sexuality. Through the intersectional matrix, I posited that multiple functions of …
Narrative As Self Performance: The Rhetorical Construction Of Identities On Facebook Profiles, Marianne Leonardi
Narrative As Self Performance: The Rhetorical Construction Of Identities On Facebook Profiles, Marianne Leonardi
Communication ETDs
New ways of creating and presenting the self in the "space" of the Internet are fascinating, but not yet fully understood. Framed in the theoretical literature of Goffman's presentation of the self, and Burke's conception of rhetoric, the study's primary concern is to explain and understand how Facebook users construct identities using narrative fragments on their profiles and the offline effects of these narrative performances. Specifically, this study argues that narratives are a type of rhetorical performance, and that both narratives and identities have symbolic meaning and rhetorical components. While the effects of online identities occur at the macro-level, the …
A History And Development Of The Intercultural Communication Field In Japan (1950-Present), Holly Siebert Kawakami
A History And Development Of The Intercultural Communication Field In Japan (1950-Present), Holly Siebert Kawakami
Communication ETDs
The history of the academic discipline of Intercultural Communication in Japan began at the end of the 1950s, in convergence with the historical context of Japan devastated by war and the social context of a population struggling to navigate a new identity and way forward. Both Japanese and American scholars contributed to the establishment and development of the Intercultural Communication field over the decades. Three research questions were posed for this study: one, why did the Intercultural Communication discipline become established in Japan as the first place after the United States, two, what was it about Intercultural Communication that resonated …

A Feminist Approach To Understanding Esl Identity Development: A Case Study Of Korean Women In U.S. Universities, Seonsook Park
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Current literature and approaches to identity construction within L2 contexts often fail or underemphasize the important roles that strategic identity and discursive-place identity play in second language acquisition processes. This study explores how education, English discourse, and American cultures affect the identities of three female Korean graduate students in American institutions. The theoretical approach of this project integrated elements from sociocultural theory and feminist research methodology. The participants narratives, collected via interviews and email exchanges over a period of a year, have revealed that when these ESL students moved from their native country, Korea, to America, they were not only …

The College Of Education Family Literacy Program: Exploring The Literacy Experiences Of Latino Families, Rosemary Fessinger
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This study presents the results of a fifteen-month research project conducted with a group of Latina (Mexicana) immigrant mothers who took part in an after-school family literacy program that was grounded in a participatory approach to education. This family literacy program emphasized a strengths perspective by acknowledging the rich resources that all families bring to their children's school experiences. The research explores the experiences of the families, mostly mothers, who participated in this family literacy program and examined how their participation impacted their personal literacy development, their children's academic experiences, and their involvement in the school and broader community. During …
