The Impact Of Van Hiele-Based Geometry Instruction On Student Understanding, Susan Connolly Apr 2010

The Impact Of Van Hiele-Based Geometry Instruction On Student Understanding, Susan Connolly

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Developments over the last three decades provide momentum for revising high school geometry instruction as recommended by the van Hieles. Cognitive learning theories, brain research, multiple intelligence theories, revised national and state standards and computer technology-based tools all contribute to the rationale and the means to deliver instruction that enables students to construct knowledge and understanding through a sequential process of exploration, inductive and deductive reasoning. A Regents Geometry unit on quadrilaterals was developed based on these theories and techniques. Forty-three students enrolled in the high school Regents Geometry course received instruction using the newly developed materials. The results of …

Dichotic Auditory Training In 6 To 15 Year Olds, Chasity M. Mccrum

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if participants with normal auditory processing skills would improve after receiving the Dichotic Auditory Training (DAT) when compared to a group of normal participants who only received pre- and post-testing. Twenty participants, age 6:0 to 15:11 years, participated in this study. A standard audiological evaluation was completed for each participant. Pretest and posttest were completed that included (1) DAT testing, (2) SCAN-C/A, (3) Staggered Spondaic Word test, and (4) Dichotic Digits (Single/Double). The results were analyzed for statistically significant differences between pre- and post-testing results and between groups. Any significant results …

The Individualization Of Instruction Among Literacy Coaches, Elissa Mitchell Apr 2010

The Individualization Of Instruction Among Literacy Coaches, Elissa Mitchell

Education Masters

This action research looks at how literacy coaches can individualize instruction for both teachers and students. Educational theories support the importance of individualized instruction for students and previous research re-enforces the importance of individualized instruction in literacy coaching. This study involved interviewing practicing literacy coaches and literacy coaching candidates as well as first-hand experiences with literacy coaching. The findings show that the three primary ways that literacy coaches can individualize instruction is by focusing on student needs through working with students, teachers, and the school. Literacy coaches need to focus on the needs of students through working directly with classroom …

Reading Motivation: The Difference Between Boys And Girls, Jacqueline Willoughby Apr 2010

Reading Motivation: The Difference Between Boys And Girls, Jacqueline Willoughby

Education Masters

This research paper examines the different factors that motivate girls and boys to read. Current research claims that boys and girls have different preferences, which is a large cause of the “gender gap” in schools. Other researchers claim that boys‟ resistance to reading is due to the type of texts used in school, which is primarily fiction. Action research was conducted, where five fifth graders chose three texts that they would like to read, found that boys and girls have similar reading preferences, but varies from person to person, not gender. This implies that students need opportunities to choose texts …

Response To Intervention: Implications For Use When Identifying Students With Special Needs, Joshua Harris Apr 2010

Response To Intervention: Implications For Use When Identifying Students With Special Needs, Joshua Harris

Education Masters

Upon being registered in August of 2006, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) began requiring schools to think about the way in which they identify students with learning disabilities (SLD) and in many cases, then make changes to their systems of classification. Response to Intervention, or RTI, has emerged as a popular method for meeting the federal mandates. Combining high quality instruction, progress monitoring, and more specific supports based on students’ response to research-based teaching practices, RTI is becoming a common way to provide both instructional and behavioral interventions for students at risk, and determine if a child …

Connecting Math And Science To Home, School And Community Through Preservice Teacher Education, Cherie Mccollough, Olga Ramirez

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The importance of parental involvement in enhancing the quality of their children’s educational experiences and academic success is well documented in the literature (Chrispeels & Rivero, 2001; Cordry & Wilson, 2004; Delgado-Gaitan, 2001; Dierking & Falk, 1994; Jones &Valdez, 1997; Quezada, Diaz, Sanchez, 2003; Valdes, 1996). Parent involvement results in higher reading scores, greater language growth and development, and increased motivation to achieve (Harvard Family Research Project, 2007). Parental involvement includes a wide range of activities from promoting the importance of education to participating in the decision-making and operations of schools. For maximum results, there should be some alignment between …

Fundamental Issues In L2 Classroom Assessment Practices, Esmael Hamidi Apr 2010

Fundamental Issues In L2 Classroom Assessment Practices, Esmael Hamidi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this paper is to provide L2 teachers with a succinct, conceptual framework of implementing the assessment forms to facilitate the relevant practical issues in L2 classrooms while focusing the current theories and views of assessment issues in L2 classrooms. I begin with giving a good rinse-out to assessment by distinguishing it from testing and evaluation. Then, following a brief account of the pedagogical history of assessment with a major focus on its ‘authentic’ aspect as the current concern to the educators of the field, I will discuss four criteria regarding the quality of assessment. The paper will …

Who Maketh The Clouds His Chariot: The Comparative Method And The Mythopoetical Motif Of Cloud-Riding In Psalm 104 And The Epic Of Baal, Jordan Wesley Jones Apr 2010

Who Maketh The Clouds His Chariot: The Comparative Method And The Mythopoetical Motif Of Cloud-Riding In Psalm 104 And The Epic Of Baal, Jordan Wesley Jones

Masters Theses

Alleging parallels between Scripture and other ancient Near Eastern texts has always been a matter of controversy. The controversy has resulted from criticism of the comparative method by those who accuse its users of being overly simplistic or reckless when applying their particular approaches to the texts. This recklessness has resulted in alleged connections that are now considered very loose, unjustified, and harmful to the context of Scripture. In order to avoid the dreaded "parallelomania" that has resulted from hasty conclusions in comparative studies, it is necessary to approach alleged comparative units in a more concrete fashion, synthesizing the best …

Bilingual-Bicultural Teachers' Cultural Competence Development Blueprint In Predominantly Subtractive Bilingualism Contexts: Insights From Research Literature, Valentin Ekiaka Nzai,, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Recent studies on quality education for diverse classrooms suggest cultural competence as a prerequisite for culturally responsive teaching. A critical analysis of teacher education strategies aimed at increasing pre-service teachers’ cultural competence, in mostly white-serving and traditional teacher education programs, reveals that such approaches generally situate white teacher candidates only as closely as the periphery of bilingual students’ cultures. Further, while a number of diversity-oriented educational programs have been designed for white pre-service teachers, there currently exists no coherent and comprehensive framework for developing U.S.-born bilingual pre-service teachers’ bilingual-bicultural competences in predominantly white-serving and traditional teacher education programs. This paper …

Event Segmentation And Memory Retrieval In Reading Comprehension, Charles Baker Brenner Apr 2010

Event Segmentation And Memory Retrieval In Reading Comprehension, Charles Baker Brenner

Linguistics Honors Projects

Comprehending text involves the convergence of top-down, expectation-driven processes and bottom-up, stimulus-driven processes. The precise nature of this convergence, however, is not well understood. The current study used narrative time shifts and shifts in protagonist goal, both hypothesized to encourage event-segmented memory representations, to investigate the interaction between automatic and constructive memory processes during reading. The addition of time and goal shifts was found to have no effect on the automatic retrieval of information from memory. The results are interpreted as support for the bottom-up account of retrieval of information during reading, and for the idea that the top-down account …

Perceptions Of Discrimination: An Analysis Of Four National Surveys Of Latinos; Findings From The Pew Hispanic Center/Kaiser Family Foundation National Survey Of Latinos, Jenny Gallegos

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Objective: Throughout the history of the United States different legal measures have resulted in efforts to deal with immigration issues, and some have resulted in adverse consequences for Latinos in particular. Massive immigration from 1850-1920 arose the historic distrust and suspicion of Anglos toward Mexicans and tended to evoke various kinds of repressive acts, excluding Mexican Americans from political participation (Garcia and de la Garza 1977). After the 9/11 attacks Latinos reported a heightened level of perceived discrimination as well as fear of deportation, even among U.S. Citizens. Methods: Using multiple-regression analysis this study analyzes four datasets of National Survey …

Linguistic Politics: Creating A Communication Canon Post World War Ii, Erin Miller

McNair Scholars Research Journal

What does it mean to communicate and how “best” can this action be accomplished? Perhaps the second part of this question, rather than the first, describes the history of approaches to ideas of communication and their practices. The first “official” textbook providing a window on this history reveals a remarkable consensus on what “communication” and related terms should mean, if not directly in models, then in their assumptions and, especially, their orientations—both of which grew out of World War II and migrated quickly into the 1950’s. The field of communication was nascent when, in 1954, The Process and Effects of …

Theology As Science: A Response To "Theology As Queen And Psychology As Handmaid", Mark R. Mcminn, Jeannine Graham

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In response to Porter's article, "Theology as Queen and Psychology as Handmaid," three criteria are offered for theology as science. A scientific theology must be open to new discovery, it requires a community, and it is available for practical application. In addition to the benefits offered by Porter, viewing theology as science can promote practical helping efforts within the church.
