Mastering The Midas Touch: The Indo-Trinidadian Diaspora In North America And England, 1967-2007, Jerome Teelucksingh Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article will assess the experiences of the Indo-Trinidadian immigrant population during 1967 to 2007. The displaced Indo-Trinidadians residing in North America and Britain were challenged to define themselves in relation to Afro-Caribbean and Asian-Indian immigrants. The broad categories used to determine the success or failure of migration included culture, social mobility, identity and religion. The research will prove that the Indo-Trinidadian diaspora in North America and England have experienced considerable social mobility and acculturation.

A Colorectal Cancer Screening Project In An Old Order Mennonite Community: Capstone Project Technical Report, Maria Eve Main
Nursing Faculty Publications
The purpose of this project was to determine if colorectal cancer (CRC) screening education and community access to fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) is associated with an increase in the uptake of FOBT in an old order Mennonite community. Utilizing a modified cultural model, an educational offering on CRC screening and access to FOBT in the community was delivered to a self-selected sample of age-eligible participants. Thirty-three age eligible residents completed the CRC screening questionnaires and received education on CRC screening. Twenty-nine of the age-eligible participants were found to be at average risk and twenty-three elected to receive FOBT testing …

Web 2.0 has changed the way we share and keep up with information. We communicate through social media platforms and make the information we exchange to a large extent publicly available. Linked Open Data (LOD) follows the same paradigm of sharing information but also makes it machine accessible. LOD provides an abundance of structured information albeit in a less formally rigorous form than would be desirable for Semantic Web applications. Nevertheless, most of the LOD assertions are community reviewed and we can rely on their accuracy to a large extent. In this work we want to follow the Web 2.0 …

Hiv Risk Factors Among Moroccan And Turkish Same-Sex Attracted Youth In Amsterdam, Daniel Woznica
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This report is the outcome of a month-long exploratory study on the main HIV risk factors among Moroccan and Turkish same-sex attracted (SSA) youth in Amsterdam. Data was obtained by way of interviews conducted with five experts, categorized as: academics, sexual and ethnic minority activists, and HIV professionals. Five main risk factors were determined: cultural differences; language barriers; stigma and taboo around sexuality and HIV within Islamic communities; socioeconomic marginalization; and lack of a positive term for same-sex sexual behavior and identity among the target group. Recommendations for future research include interviews with Moroccan and Turkish SSA youth themselves. Implications …

Hyman Hurwitz And The Possibilities And Limitations Of The Sympathetic Imagination In The Work Of Hazlitt, Wordsworth, And Coleridge, Lindsay Dearinger
Hyman Hurwitz And The Possibilities And Limitations Of The Sympathetic Imagination In The Work Of Hazlitt, Wordsworth, And Coleridge, Lindsay Dearinger
Journal of South Texas English Studies
The article offers information on the book "Hebrew Tales," by Hyman Hurwitz and notes that the traditional Jewish wisdom is harmonized with contemporary British culture. The author offers his views on Hurwitz's work towards the Talmud, in comparison to the work and lives of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge on the profound possibilities and limitations of Romantic sympathy. It discusses the contributions of the Jews of England to either Enlightenment or Romantic thought and how William Hazlitt, an advocate of Jewish naturalization had managed to balance respect for the Enlightenment ideals.

Effects Of Reticence, Affect For Communication Channels, And Self-Perceived Competence On Usage Of Instant Messaging, Lynn Kelly, James A. Keaten, Michael Hazel, Jason A. Williams
Psychology and Child Development
This study examined the relationship between reticence (Keaten & Kelly, 2000) and instant messaging (IM), including affect for IM, usage of IM, and self-perceived competence using IM in difficult interpersonal situations. Participants (N=336) from undergraduate courses responded to self-report measures of reticence, affect for IM, general usage of IM, as well as usage in challenging interpersonal situations, and communication competence. A structural equation model indicated that reduced anxiety and inhibition, IM competence, and increased preparation and control explained 34% of the variance in frequency of IM use in a difficult personal situation. Results showed that higher levels of reticence were …

Making The Boys Cry: The Performative Dimensions Of Fluid Gender, Shane Miller
Making The Boys Cry: The Performative Dimensions Of Fluid Gender, Shane Miller
Strategic Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This essay examines how young girls who participate in combat sports such as wrestling, a traditionally male stronghold, perform continually shifting gender identities that interweave physical traits and behaviors typically coded as masculine or feminine. Drawing upon auto-ethnographic and ethnographic methodologies, I demonstrate how a study of actual lived body experience grounded in a fluid conception of gender is able to remain sensitive to the unique performative gender work being done while providing a critical interrogation of the moments in which the performance of gender is inscribed as nonconformative. I suggest that if we wish to understand the gender dynamics …

Athletics And Violence Against Women: A Study Of Relationship, Meeghan Mercurio
Athletics And Violence Against Women: A Study Of Relationship, Meeghan Mercurio
Social Work Theses
This study looked to explore the correlation of violence and being a student athlete. The study was conducted at a small, private, Catholic college in the Northeastern part of the United States. There were 18 female participants and 24 male participants. The participants completed a 27 question survey pertaining to attitudes about violence against women. An independent T –test and a Pearson correlation was used. However, both tests proved the null hypothesis and the data proved not to be statistically significant. Yet, the negative reactions of the participants were significant. Research determined that more data and research is needed.

Towards Capacity Building: Rejecting Hiring Practices Based On Accent And Skin Colour, Teresa L. Van Deven
Towards Capacity Building: Rejecting Hiring Practices Based On Accent And Skin Colour, Teresa L. Van Deven
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
As Cambodia begins the process of capacity building in higher education, now becomes the crucial time to revisit language policies practiced in other parts of Asia as a way of caution to the prevailing philosophical, educational and theoretical ideologies that are so very much a part of language education. This paper looks at the hiring practices based upon accent and skin colour. It includes part of a critical ethnographical study that looks at various linguistic and pedagogical fallacies which continue to promote the dominant fiction of native-speaker authority. This paper addresses implications on language education within a system which perpetuates …
The Imagined Moment, Inderjeet Mani
The Imagined Moment, Inderjeet Mani
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Time is a key aspect of narrative. It can advance a story, illuminate its role in our daily lives, and help us understand how events unfold. In this groundbreaking interdisciplinary work, Inderjeet Mani uses recent developments in linguistics and computer science to analyze the use of time in narrative form. The Imagined Moment outlines directions for an emerging discipline of “corpus narratology,” an approach involving the computer analysis and interpretation of multimillion-word collections of narrative text. This approach, Mani explains, could alter the very foundations of narrative theory. Accordingly, he develops a computer representation for timelines and applies it to …

Seminole Voices, Julian M. Pleasants, Harry A. Kersey Jr.
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In a series of interviews conducted from 1969 to 1971 and again from 1998 to 1999, more than two hundred members of the Florida Seminole community described their lives for the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida. Some of those interviews, now showcased in this volume, shed light on how the Seminoles’ society, culture, religion, government, health care, and economy had changed during a tumultuous period in Florida’s history. In 1970 the Seminoles lived in relative poverty, dependent on the Bureau of Indian Affairs, tourist trade, cattle breeding, handicrafts, and truck farming. By 2006 they were …
Quotidiana, Patrick Madden
Quotidiana, Patrick Madden
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Reflecting on Montaigne, Virginia Woolf remarked, “The most common actions—a walk, a talk, solitude in one’s own orchard—can be enhanced and lit up by the association of the mind.” In Quotidiana, Patrick Madden illuminates these common actions and seemingly commonplace moments, making connections that revise and reconfigure the overlooked and underappreciated. Focusing on the search—for meaning, for approximate knowledge, for hints and intimations of the larger world—Madden ponders the finite by counting fruit at the local supermarket or estimating the number of grains of sand on the earth or celebrating linguistic and grammatical miscalculations. He muses on the origins …

Swords From The East, Harold Lamb
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Their conquest was measured not in miles but in degrees of longitude. They smashed the gates of empires, overthrew kingdoms, diverted rivers, and depopulated entire countries. They were the Mongols of Genghis Khan, swift and merciless but also resourceful, bold, and cunning. Their tale has seldom been told in the West, and never by an author with the acumen of Harold Lamb. Ride with young Temujin as he outwits schemers and assassins and rises to conquer Asia as Genghis Khan. Venture to the land beneath the northern lights on a mission of vengeance with Maak the Buriat. Stand with Aruk …
Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson
Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Recent scholarship on the Amazon has challenged depictions of the region that emphasize its natural exuberance or represent its residents as historically isolated peoples stoically resisting challenges from powerful global forces. The contributors to this volume follow this lead by situating the discussion of the Amazon and its inhabitants at the intersections of identity politics, debates about socioeconomic sovereignty, and processes of place making. Editing Eden focuses on case studies from Amazonian Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador regarding the themes of indigeneity, community making, development politics, and the transcendence of indigenous/nonindigenous divides. Portraits of the Amazon emerge through an analysis of …
