Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson May 2010

Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson

Linguistics Honors Projects

This study analyzes whether there should be a visual component to a model of speech perception and production by comparing the jaw opening, advancement, and rounding of American English and non-English vowels in the presence and absence of a visual stimulus. Surprisingly, jaw opening did not change production, but the presence of the visual stimulus was found to be a significant factor in participants’ vowel advancement for non-English vowels. This may be explained by lip rounding, but requires further research in order to develop a full understanding of the impact of visual input on vowel production to be used in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract Campbell, Emahunn Raheem Ali. MA. The University of Memphis. August 2010. “The Specter of Marxism: The Marxian Influence on Amiri Baraka’s Black Nationalist Poetry.” Kathy Lou Schultz. Baraka’s move from cultural nationalism to Marxism came through an understanding “that it was the [capitalism] that oppressed [Blacks] and that it could not only utilize whites, who seem to be in control of it, but that it could also utilize Blacks.” His reasoning is not solely based on one’s relation to the means of production; it is also based on what he was observing in his native city of Newark, New …

Transitioning A Lutheran Elementary School To Meet The Needs Of English Language Learners And Their Families: The First Two Years, Sara L. Doyle May 2010

Transitioning A Lutheran Elementary School To Meet The Needs Of English Language Learners And Their Families: The First Two Years, Sara L. Doyle

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The number of students in American schools whose first language is not English has grown dramatically in the past twenty years. Crawford (2004) reports that the Number of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students nearly doubled in the 1990s. According to Crawford, the number of LEP students in 2001 was more than 8 percent of the K-12 enrollment in American public schools. Goldenberg reports (2008) that in 1990 one in 20 public school students was an English Language Learner (ELL) and in 2008 the figure was one in nine. According to demographers that number could rise to one in four within …

The Experience Of Internationally Born Nurses Working In Twin Cities Hospitals, Jolene C. Baker May 2010

The Experience Of Internationally Born Nurses Working In Twin Cities Hospitals, Jolene C. Baker

Theses and Graduate Projects

This qualitative study explores through a phenomenological process, the experiences of five Internationally Born Nurses (IBNs) working in four hospitals in the metropolitan area of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The IBNs were interviewed using Brenda Dervin's Sense-Making theory. This communication methodology presents the human being in phenomenological terms, as a body-mind-heart-spirit moving through time and space, with a past history, present reality, and future dreams or ambitions. The nursing theory underlying this study was drawn from Jean Watson's Caring Science as Sacred Science. In addition, the Christian worldview articulated by Shelly and Miller with particular emphasis on the concept of …

The Effect Of Learning On Sentence Prosody In Japanese, Joanna Baldwin Clark May 2010

The Effect Of Learning On Sentence Prosody In Japanese, Joanna Baldwin Clark

Linguistics Honors Projects

This study investigates the effect of learning on prosodic production competence in native English L2 speakers of Japanese. Intonation contour and speech rate as indicators of competency were examined. It was hypothesized that more experience with Japanese would lead to more native-like prosody. The study tested the production of fourteen L2 learners, ten non-learners and six native speakers. Participants recorded twenty-three sentences of Japanese. Acoustic data was analyzed for speech rate and fundamental frequency (F0). Results showed that experience is positively correlated with speech rate and not correlated with deviation from the Japanese mean intonation contour.

The Gold Line: Exploring The Resurgence Of Public Rail Transport In Los Angeles, Simrat L. Dugal May 2010

The Gold Line: Exploring The Resurgence Of Public Rail Transport In Los Angeles, Simrat L. Dugal

Scripps Senior Theses

Mass transit in the form of light rail is, in many ways, a new and revolutionary idea for the Greater Los Angeles Area. Although mass light rail transit did exist in Los Angeles in the form of the Pacific Electric Railways red car system, an extensive network of metro rail lines has never existed in Los Angeles County since Pacific Electric was dismantled and shut down in 1950. Because of this, the popular mode of transport in LA County has traditionally been cars, and public transport has consisted mostly of bus routes. This has all changed in the last few …

Reforming "Hellenization" Into A Two-Way Street: The Dialectic Of Colonization Between Greeks And Sikels In Eastern Sicily, Dirk Petersen May 2010

Reforming "Hellenization" Into A Two-Way Street: The Dialectic Of Colonization Between Greeks And Sikels In Eastern Sicily, Dirk Petersen

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

Extensive colonization was a key feature of Greek-speaking societies of the ancient Mediterranean. Diffusion of colonizers likewise led to a diffusion of the colonized, ramifications of which pepper extant literature. Rather than acknowledging these groups’ multi-vocality, Classical scholarship traditionally discusses their relationship employing the one-sided term, “Hellenization.” Even those interested in the experiences of the colonized often employ concepts such as appropriation and assimilation in their discussions. Rejecting these approaches, this paper employs a case study of Greek colonization in eastern Sicily to seek, instead, a dialectic, a lens to account for the nuances of pluralism inherent in these interactions.

The Michael Chekhov Technique: In The Classroom And On Stage, Josh Chenard May 2010

The Michael Chekhov Technique: In The Classroom And On Stage, Josh Chenard

Theses and Dissertations

Referred to by Constantin Stanislavski as “My most brilliant pupil,” Michael Chekhov’s approach to acting is founded in an understanding of the artist as a whole being whose thoughts, feelings, desires, voice, and physical body are intimately interwoven. The Michael Chekhov technique trains these aspects jointly while encouraging the actor to fully explore and utilize his or her unlimited, rich, and fertile imagination. I have seen the powerful benefits of this technique as an actor (which I have been utilizing for 13 years) and as a teacher and director (for almost 10 years). In my thesis, I will firstly describe …

“No More Strangers And Foreigners, But Fellowcitizens:” Multicultural Education And Conflict, Jamon F. Peariso May 2010

“No More Strangers And Foreigners, But Fellowcitizens:” Multicultural Education And Conflict, Jamon F. Peariso

Christian Perspectives in Education

This paper argues that prevalent forms of multicultural education are separatist and divisive in nature, irrational, inequitable, and can cause conflict. A unifying brand of multicultural education is offered as an alternative which builds on commonalities, can alleviate conflict, fosters academic achievement for all students, and is built on Christian principles.

Syllables And Concepts In Large Vocabulary Speech Recognition, Paul A. De Palma May 2010

Syllables And Concepts In Large Vocabulary Speech Recognition, Paul A. De Palma

Linguistics ETDs

Transforming an acoustic signal to words is the gold standard in automatic speech recognition. While recognizing that orthographic transcription is a valuable technique for comparing speech recognition systems without respect to application, it must also be recognized that transcription is not something that human beings do with their language partners. In fact, transforming speech into words is not necessary to emulate human performance in many contexts. By relaxing the constraint that the output of speech recognition be words, we might at the same time effectively relax the bias toward writing in speech recognition research. This puts our work in the …

Figuration & Frequency: A Usage-Based Approach To Metaphor, Daniel Sanford May 2010

Figuration & Frequency: A Usage-Based Approach To Metaphor, Daniel Sanford

Linguistics ETDs

Two of the major claims of the cognitivist approach to metaphor, the paradigm which has emerged as dominant over the last three decades, are 1) that metaphor is a conceptual, rather than strictly linguistic, phenomenon, and 2) that metaphor exemplifies processes which are at work in cognition more generally. This view of metaphor is here placed within the context of the functionalist approach to language, which asserts that linguistic structure is emergent in nature, the use of language directly influencing the storage and representation thereof. The dissertation argues that metaphors, as conventionalized cognitive structures, are themselves highly influenced by frequency …

Betrayals, Secrets, And Lies: Unfaithful Reading In Modernist Undecidability, Lucas H. Harriman May 2010

Betrayals, Secrets, And Lies: Unfaithful Reading In Modernist Undecidability, Lucas H. Harriman

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation presents an argument for the ethical value of a reader's inability to fully comprehend works by Jorge Luis Borges, G.K. Chesterton, William Faulkner, and Brian O'Nolan (aka Flann O'Brien). Such texts demand creative engagement by the reader which could be described as a necessary betrayal of the text. Viewed in the context of the so-called "ethical turn" in literary theory, the revaluation of infidelity accomplished by such unfaithful reading can foster a greater openness toward the unknown, and ultimately unknowable, other. Similarly, by juxtaposing the work of Faulkner, a canonical modernist writer, with more nontraditional writers such as …

Lost In Translation? How The Culture(S) Of The Technological University Dublin (Dit) Could Be Analysed Via A Lens Of Critical Discourse Analysis (Cda) Of Its Strategic Plan, And Other Documents, During Its Transition To Grangegorman, Ann Conway May 2010

Lost In Translation? How The Culture(S) Of The Technological University Dublin (Dit) Could Be Analysed Via A Lens Of Critical Discourse Analysis (Cda) Of Its Strategic Plan, And Other Documents, During Its Transition To Grangegorman, Ann Conway

Other resources

This paper discusses some of the theoretical foundations to critical discourse analysis (CDA) and will review the principles of CDA. It will attempt to answer how CDA can be understood and what conceptual tools it offers as a lens to view DIT’s changing culture and role in education and society during its transition to Grangegorman. This move from multiple sites to a ‘one size fits all’ campus is believed to be about better servicing the needs of society by ‘supporting the economic, social and cultural life of its people in one main campus’ (DEGW, 2009). CDA focuses on the links …

Data were analyzed by reviewing the material, embodying the data in my personal …

Derivation Of Mass Independent Quantum Treatment Of Phenomenon, David Parker May 2010

Derivation Of Mass Independent Quantum Treatment Of Phenomenon, David Parker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The derivation and applications is presented of a spatial variable or spatial radius which is related to the inertia or mass-energy of any quantum body by a Lorentz invariant relation. Mass independent DeBroglie and Schroedinger equations are derived and applied to the resolution of the linguistic incompatibility between quantum theory and the geometrical weak equivalence principle. The equivalence principle is restated in terms of the spatial radius. The gravitational attraction between bodies and the relativistic energy are both presented in terms of the spatial radius follows. The ratio of the gravitational force to the Coulomb force at the Planck scale …

Avatime Noun Classes, Ronny C. Watkins May 2010

Avatime Noun Classes, Ronny C. Watkins

Linguistics Honors Projects

Like many African languages, particularly Bantu languages, the Ghanaian language of Avatime organizes its nouns into a class system. Noun classes use affixes to indicate semantic category. For example, many languages with noun classes have a class for ‘people’ nouns, such as ‘child’ and ‘stranger.’ Previous research on Avatime has postulated between seven and nine classes. The current study is based on original field work done in the village of Vane in Ghana. The new data show that Avatime has seven noun classes, distinguished by singular and plural prefixes, definite article suffixes, and semantic similarities.
