"My One Regret...": The Case For Cultural Immersion In Study Abroad Programs, Kevin Geyer May 2010

"My One Regret...": The Case For Cultural Immersion In Study Abroad Programs, Kevin Geyer

Honors Scholar Theses

Study abroad has been an established institution in US universities for almost a century, and hundreds of thousands of students travel to all corners of the world every year. While many list some degree of cultural immersion as a main goal, most students have a difficult time achieving this. Drawing from interviews with twenty-five UConn undergraduates that studied abroad, this study attempts to identify factors that hold students back from cultural encounters. The study also discusses the 'success stories' of undergrads that made significant connections abroad, and highlights the factors that can lead to this (e.g., homestays, jobs, internships).

Phonological Development In Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, Erin N. Toohey

Honors Scholar Theses

Phonological development in hearing children of deaf parents Dr. Diane Lillo-Martin 5/9/2010 The researcher wishes to determine the significance of a unique linguistic environment on the effects of phonological development. The research examines whether 3 hearing children of deaf parents, hereafter referred to as CODAs, have inconsistencies, as compared to children in a typical linguistic environment, in their syllable structure, phonological processes or phonemic inventories. More specifically, the research asks whether their speech is more consistent with children of typical environments or more similar to children with phonological delays or disorders or articulation disorders. After the examination of these three …

Adolescent Meaning Making Of Past Experience, Joshua Noffsinger May 2010

Adolescent Meaning Making Of Past Experience, Joshua Noffsinger

Honors Scholar Theses

This study examined the meaning making processes of self-defining memories in adolescents, as well as how they co-construct the narratives of these events with their parents. The sample consisted of 53 students, aged 12-14, who came in for recorded laboratory sessions to discuss self-defining memories with their parents. These sessions were later coded on levels of meaning making and co-construction. These codes were, then, analyzed with the adolescents’ questionnaire scores regarding friendship quality, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors. The data revealed that adolescents and parents were both rated higher for more complex levels of meaning making and that those rated higher …

Intervention Progress In Two Case Studies Of Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Laura Marie Czernik

Honors Scholar Theses

There is a great amount of controversy surrounding childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). The most prominent issue is focused on the diagnostic criteria of which to utilize for this disorder. Because of this debate, assessment methods, along with intervention techniques, are heavily questioned. This study examines the progress children with characteristics of CAS make during intervention. Furthermore, it seeks to determine if another diagnosis is possible for these children by examining the speech sound errors such children make. Two children with characteristics of CAS were the focus of this study. Data for these children was gathered from client files at …

Orthographic Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognates From The Paivio, Yuille, And Madigan Imagery Norms, José A. Montelongo, Tasha Roehrick, Anita Hernández May 2010

Orthographic Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognates From The Paivio, Yuille, And Madigan Imagery Norms, José A. Montelongo, Tasha Roehrick, Anita Hernández

Graduate Studies in Education

Cognates are words that are orthographically, semantically, and syntactically similar in two languages. There are over 20,000 Spanish-English cognates in the Spanish and English languages. Research has shown that cognates facilitate vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension for language learners when compared to non-cognate words. Language researchers often require calibrated materials to study the effects of word characteristics on learning and memory. In this study, orthographic transparency ratings for five hundred nouns drawn from the Paivio, Yuille, and Madigan (1968) imagery norms were collected.

The Figure Of The Nun And The Gothic Construction Of Femininity In Matthew Lewis’S The Monk, Ann Radcliffe’S The Italian, And Charlotte Brontë’S Villette, Marie Hause May 2010

The Figure Of The Nun And The Gothic Construction Of Femininity In Matthew Lewis’S The Monk, Ann Radcliffe’S The Italian, And Charlotte Brontë’S Villette, Marie Hause

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The treatment of nuns and convents in gothic novels contributes to the presentation of various attitudes toward women who resist normative female roles. This is illustrated in the consideration of three central, and very different, gothic or post-gothic works: Matthew Lewis's The Monk (1796), Ann Radcliffe's The Italian (1796), and Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1853). These novels draw on conflicting popular associations of nuns and convents, including nuns as chaste, sexual, or tragic and convents as brothels, prisons, or liberating communities. In each novel, anti-Catholicism also comes into play in the way that nuns work as foci for explorations of female …

Slogging And Stumbling Toward Social Justice In A Private Elementary School: The Complicated Case Of St. Malachy, Martin Scanlan May 2010

Slogging And Stumbling Toward Social Justice In A Private Elementary School: The Complicated Case Of St. Malachy, Martin Scanlan

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This case study examines St. Malachy, an urban Catholic elementary school primarily serving children traditionally marginalized by race, class, linguistic heritage, and disability. As a private school, St. Malachy serves the public good by recruiting and retaining such traditionally marginalized students. As empirical studies involving Catholic schools frequently juxtapose them with public schools, the author presents this examination from a different tack. Neither vilifying nor glorifying Catholic schooling, this study critically examines the pursuit of social justice in this school context. Data gathered through a 1-year study show that formal and informal leaders in St. Malachy adapted their governance, aggressively …

The Co-Development Of Manual And Vocal Activity In Infants, Holly Meadowsweet Koegler May 2010

The Co-Development Of Manual And Vocal Activity In Infants, Holly Meadowsweet Koegler

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Manual and vocal actions in humans are coupled throughout the lifespan, from the anticipatory opening of the mouth as the hand moves to meet it in natal development to the more sophisticated co-expressive gesture of the proficient communicator (Iverson & Thelen, 1999). By adulthood, the systems supporting both speech and manual actions of gesture are so wholly integrated that the expression of both actions together is seamless and effortless (Gentilucci & Nicoladis, 2008). Both systems, though controlled by different muscles moving different articulators, exhibit parallels in their development and organization (Meier & Willerman, 1995). The manual control supporting gesture emerges …

Investigating The Functionality Of A Self-Report Instrument To Detect Autistic Traits In A Non-Clinical College Population: Psychometric Properties Of The Short Version Of Autism-Spectrum Quotient (Aq-26), Anna Zilberberg May 2010

Investigating The Functionality Of A Self-Report Instrument To Detect Autistic Traits In A Non-Clinical College Population: Psychometric Properties Of The Short Version Of Autism-Spectrum Quotient (Aq-26), Anna Zilberberg

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The present study investigated the dimensionality of the short version of Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-26) (Baron-Cohen et al., 2001) via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Designed to screen for autistic traits in a non-clinical adult population, the AQ-26 can potentially be a very useful tool both in research and practice. However, evidence pertaining to the structural validity of the AQ-26 is scarce and inconclusive. Competing factor structure models based on previous research were specified and tested using an American college student sample. None of the theoretically specified models provided adequate fit for the data and the focus …

Applying The Cultural-Linguistic Interpretive Matrix To Neuropsychological Assessment, Karol J. Mendoza May 2010

Applying The Cultural-Linguistic Interpretive Matrix To Neuropsychological Assessment, Karol J. Mendoza

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Psychologists are administering assessments to culturally and linguistically diverse individuals with limited information regarding validity and are left with many scores to subjectively interpret. This study looked at developing a guideline when administering seven frequently administered neuropsychological assessments based on the Cultural-Linguistic Interpretive Matrix. Practitioners were asked to rate the cultural loading and linguistic demand and provide rationale for the placement. Results indicated that the Judgment of Line Orientation, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, Trail Making Test (Part A), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test have low cultural loading and linguistic demand. The Trail Making Test (Part B) was rated as Moderate …

African American Children Living In Urban Environments: An Investigation Of Early Literacy And The Influence Of Psychological Strengths And Family Support, Pia Stanard May 2010

African American Children Living In Urban Environments: An Investigation Of Early Literacy And The Influence Of Psychological Strengths And Family Support, Pia Stanard

Theses and Dissertations

Literacy is a basic fundamental skill for academic, professional, and social success in our culture. Children with low exposure to reading can experience reading difficulties, diminished cognitive development, and poor academic outcomes. Inconsistency in the conceptualization of early literacy has hampered research and development of successful, translational early literacy interventions, particularly for children from low-income households. Preschoolers from low-income, urban backgrounds (n = 426), including 221 females and 205 males aged 35 - 60 months (M = 47.46, SD = 6.44) participated in an investigation of the latent factorial structure of early literacy. The study also explored whether children’s psychological …

Proportional Representation Or Plurality Voting Electoral System: Its Positive And Negative Aspects On Democracy, Martin Okolik May 2010

Proportional Representation Or Plurality Voting Electoral System: Its Positive And Negative Aspects On Democracy, Martin Okolik

Student Theses and Dissertations

Free and fair elections are crucial elements for defining democracy. Fair elections will have to represent voters' true intent in the sense of proportionality between the votes gained in the election and the seats obtained in parliament. My project compares both the Majoritarian model and the Consensus model of democracy in terms of their electoral fairness. I ask the fundamental question: Which of the two systems promotes fairness and legitimacy in the electoral process? Most scholars have looked at this issue from different perspectives. Thus far, no study exists which explores both systems (Majoritarian and Consensus) from a fairness perspective. …
