An Integration Between Cognitive Map And Bayesian Belief Network For Conflicts Analysis In Drought Management, R. Giordano, E. Preziosi, E. Romano Jul 2010

An Integration Between Cognitive Map And Bayesian Belief Network For Conflicts Analysis In Drought Management, R. Giordano, E. Preziosi, E. Romano

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the real world, environmental decision-making takes place in a highly interconnected environment, in which neither the decisional ramifications of a management action, nor the complexity of its impact, can be neglected. This contribution focuses on drought management. Due to the high complexity of drought impacts and the ambiguity in drought perceptions, different and often conflicting drought management strategies could be implemented by different actors. This, in turn, could have a strong negative impact on the effectiveness of drought mitigation strategies. Therefore, a deep conflict analysis and the definition of effective negotiation strategies could be really useful. In this work, …

Index Of Productive Syntax For Children Who Speak African American English, Janna B. Oetting, Brandi L. Newkirk, Lekeitha R. Hartfield, Christy G. Wynn, Sonja L. Pruitt, April W. Garrity

Faculty Publications

Purpose: The validity of the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn; Scarborough, 1990) for children who speak African American English (AAE) was evaluated by conducting an item analysis and a comparison of the children's scores as a function of their maternal education level, nonmainstream dialect density, age, and clinical status. Method: The data were language samples from 62 children; 52 of the children were between the ages of 4 and 6 years and were classified as developing typically, and 10 were 6 years old with specific language impairment (SLI). Results: All IPSyn items were produced by at least 1 child, and …

Brigham Young University Remembers Walter Kempowski, Alan F. Keele

BYU Studies

David Paulsen, Jacob Hawken, and Michael Hansen discuss Sir Anthony Buzzard's work Jesus Was Not a Trinitarian (2007). In this theological review essay, the authors show that the problems inherent in the doctrines of unitarianism and trinitarianism are addressed elegantly in the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Editor's Note: At the authors' request, we have posted two versions of this article--the shorter version that was printed in the journal and the longer 22-page version that is only available here.

Renowned German writer Walter Kempowski, who passed away in late 2007, had a long and interesting …

A Washington State Elementary Teachers’ Guide To Bilingual Education, Maria G. Garcia-Bautista Jul 2010

A Washington State Elementary Teachers’ Guide To Bilingual Education, Maria G. Garcia-Bautista

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to create an elementary teacher's manual which explained the history and laws of bilingual education, first and second language development theories and approaches, bilingual education models and what research says about the various models. Proponents of English only/ Sheltered Instruction programs argue that immigrants and their descendents should assimilate to the customs and cultural norms of the United States as expeditiously as possible. Those same proponents believe that acquiring English is a prerequisite for success in education. Without a doubt English language proficiency can lead to immeasurable success. In this manual Two-Way Dual Language …

A Theoretical Justification For Special Solicitude: States And The Administrative State, Matthew S. Melamed Jul 2010

A Theoretical Justification For Special Solicitude: States And The Administrative State, Matthew S. Melamed

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article examines the Supreme Court's decision in Massachusetts v. EPA, focusing on the doctrine of special solicitude in standing analysis for states. It argues that the Court's recognition of Massachusetts' quasisovereign interest to challenge the EPA's denial of a rulemaking petition reflects a federalist concern, ensuring states can hold federal administrative agencies accountable. The analysis critiques the Court's reliance on special solicitude, highlighting tensions between traditional standing requirements and the unique role of states in constitutional adjudication. The article posits that the special function model of standing, which emphasizes states' roles as protectors of citizens' interests, provides a …

Teaching Social Skills To Children With Asperger’S And High Functioning Autism: An Evaluation Of Video Self-Modeling And Behavior Skills Training, Krystal M. Mcfee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of video self-modeling and behavior skills training to teach social skills to children with Asperger’s and high functioning autism. The targeted social skills were social initiations and social responses. The video self-modeling alone condition was implemented first using a video feedforward approach. A behavior skills training (BST) procedure was implemented following the video self-modeling alone condition for each participant. BST consisted of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. The frequency of each target behavior was scored from videotapes using 10-second frequency within interval recording. After the video self-modeling was introduced, a …

Marital Naming/Naming Marriage: Language And Status In Family Law, Suzanne A. Kim Jul 2010

Marital Naming/Naming Marriage: Language And Status In Family Law, Suzanne A. Kim

Indiana Law Journal

What's in a name? Based on current family law and policy debates, the answer would seem to be: a whole lot. Today's discussion of legal prohibitions of same-sex marriage abounds with the assumption that language, in the form of names and labels, is deeply meaningful from a status perspective. Missing from this debate, however, is a careful examination of the role that names and labels play in the construction of the status category of marriage. This Article fills this gap in family law scholarship by providing an explicit account of how language plays a critical role in reflecting and reinforcing …

Leadership Transfer Awakens Dormant Dilemmas In A Multi Ethnic Church: Correctives From Church Planting, Elizabeth Childs Drury Jul 2010

Leadership Transfer Awakens Dormant Dilemmas In A Multi Ethnic Church: Correctives From Church Planting, Elizabeth Childs Drury

Great Commission Research Journal

This case study examines the six-month transition to a new pastor for a multiethnic, multicongregational church near Washington, DC. It describes four dilemmas that emerged and proposes correctives from church-planting literature, particularly the facilitative approach of Tom Steffen (and principles from Donald McGavran and David Garrison). First, the ownership dilemma asks how a multiethnic church can achieve genuine mutuality among varied cultural groups and suggests the need for chronological Bible teaching. Second, the identity dilemma asks how deeply individual pastors and congregations need to agree on matters of governance and doctrine, and how non-negotiables can best be communicated. It insists …

Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Analysis For Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Fault Detection, T. W. Chua, W. W. Tan, Zhaoxia Wang, C. S. Chang Jul 2010

Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Analysis For Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Fault Detection, T. W. Chua, W. W. Tan, Zhaoxia Wang, C. S. Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The detection of faults in an induction motor is important as a part of preventive maintenance. Stator current is one of the most popular signals used for utility-supplied induction motor fault detection as a current sensor can be installed nonintrusively. In variable speeds operation, the use of an inverter to drive the induction motor introduces noise into the stator current so stator current based fault detection techniques become less reliable. This paper presents a hybrid algorithm, which combines time and frequency domain analysis, for broken rotor bar and bearing fault detection. Cluster information obtained by using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) …

Health And Growth: Causality Through Education, Rui Huang, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, E. Wesley Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Purpose--The paper theoretically and empirically investigates the impact on human capital investment decisions and income growth of lowered life expectancy as a result of HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Design/methodology/approach--The theoretical model is a three-period overlapping generations model where individuals go through three stages in their life, namely, young, adult and old. The model extends existing theoretical models by allowing the probability of premature death to differ for individuals at different life stage, and by allowing for stochastic technological advances. The empirical investigation focuses on the effect of HIV/AIDS on life expectancy and on the role of health on educational investments …

Foreign Language Acquisition, Motivation And Creativity, Xixi Du Jul 2010

Foreign Language Acquisition, Motivation And Creativity, Xixi Du

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Previous research has suggested that advanced Second Language (L2) learners are more intrinsically motivated than beginning L2 learners (e.g., Rivers, 1996), and that Third Language (L3) learners are more intrinsically motivated than L2 learners (Schütz, 2007). However, Chomsky (1975) believes that children have to be creative to learn their first language, and others (e.g., Fraser, 2007; Heath & Wolf, 2005) believe that children are creative even when learning a second language. In this research, 67 L2 learners and 38 L3 learners were recruited. They completed a survey including a language achievement scale, an intrinsic motivation scale, and a creativity scale. …

Enhancing The Sight Word Vocabulary Of Young Adult Students With Mental Retardation Using Signing, Nancy A. Muck Jul 2010

Enhancing The Sight Word Vocabulary Of Young Adult Students With Mental Retardation Using Signing, Nancy A. Muck

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of the study was to determine if sign language increased the rate in which students learn to read new vocabulary words. A single subject, multiple treatment research design was implemented for use with this study. All of the Saxon Phonics 1 sight words were pre-tested to develop a list of 40 words that were unknown to both participants. These forty sight vocabulary words were then randomly separated into two groups of twenty. The first group of twenty was taught using only the Saxon Phonics 1 program, while the second group of twenty was taught using sign language of …

This paper explores the idea of using differentiation strategies in the content-area classroom to improve reading skills and comprehension. In particular, this thesis explores methods and strategies that can be used in the classroom to help address the individual needs of English language learners (ELLs). A broad range of experts in curriculum, differentiation, and English language acquisition were consulted in the development of this review, which synthesizes the research on ELLs’ needs, differentiation, and differentiation strategies for ELL readers. The models for best teaching practices are then placed within a ninth grade language arts unit.

Selecting Ell Textbooks: A Content Analysis Of L2 Learning Strategies, Jeffrey Labelle Jul 2010

Selecting Ell Textbooks: A Content Analysis Of L2 Learning Strategies, Jeffrey Labelle

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Although middle school teachers use a variety of ELL textbooks, many lack effective criteria to critically select materials that represent a wide range of L2 learning strategies. This study analyzed the illustrated and written content of 33 ELL textbooks to determine the range of L2 learning strategies represented. The researchers chose an intentional, convenience sample from each textbook to form the corpus they analyzed. They sought to answer the question: To what extent do middle school ELL texts depict frequency and variation of language learning strategies in illustrations and written texts? To measure the content, the researchers developed a coding …

New Front Desk Manual Development Protocols For Millennials Working In The Hotel Industry, Christopher Chennault Jul 2010

New Front Desk Manual Development Protocols For Millennials Working In The Hotel Industry, Christopher Chennault

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Over the past year, the hotel manager of the Westin Versa, Napa, a 179 room franchised hotel located in the city of Napa, California has struggled with conveying to his younger agents (aged 18 to 24) the concept of empowerment. They have had a difficult time with what he defines as "basic common sense" when providing company brand standards to guest recovery situations that go beyond the usual five minutes of a guest interaction. In these scenarios, the young agent is forced to balance the operational needs of the hotel with the wants of the guest and find a middle …

What's All That Noise?: A Study Of Constructed Gender Meanings In News Publications For High School Students, Laura M. Moran Jul 2010

What's All That Noise?: A Study Of Constructed Gender Meanings In News Publications For High School Students, Laura M. Moran

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

It is nearly impossible to escape from the influence of media in today’s world, between newspapers, magazines, radio, television and the internet. School settings are no exception to this rule and even allow the in-school distribution of publications produced by major media companies. These publications can be used for entertainment purposes or as supplements to classroom lessons, but they can also contribute to the replication of unbalanced and highly stereotypical representations of gender at a time when their readers are typically struggling to create their own identities. Four issues of two different in-school news publications were studied to gain a …

How The Lack Of Prescriptive Technical Granularity In Hipaa Has Compromised Patient Privacy, Tim Wafa Jul 2010

How The Lack Of Prescriptive Technical Granularity In Hipaa Has Compromised Patient Privacy, Tim Wafa

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article argues that HIPAA legislation has a severe flaw within its architecture, which has compromised patient privacy. Although the drafters of the legislation recognized the importance of providing comprehensive federal legislation to improve regulatory uniformity amongst states, they failed to recognize the importance highly specific ("granular") technical requirements play in facilitating improved privacy for patients. HIPAA rules surrounding technology implementation give too much latitude to covered entities, and as a result, provide inadequate protection to protected health information. HIPAA rules should be amended to mandate baseline technical ("granular") standards to ensure uniform efficacy in the safeguarding of protected health …

Infants And Children With Hearing Loss Need Early Language Access, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, C. J. Moreland, Donna Jo Napoli, W. Osterling, C. Padden, C. Rathmann Jul 2010

Infants And Children With Hearing Loss Need Early Language Access, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, C. J. Moreland, Donna Jo Napoli, W. Osterling, C. Padden, C. Rathmann

Linguistics Faculty Works

Around 96 percent of children with hearing loss are born to parents with intact hearing, who may initially know little about deafness or sign language. Therefore, such parents will need information and support in making decisions about the medical, linguistic, and educational management of their child. Some of these decisions are time-sensitive and irreversible and come at a moment of emotional turmoil and vulnerability (when some parents grieve the loss of a normally hearing child). Clinical research indicates that a deaf child's poor communication skills can be made worse by increased level of parental depression. Given this, the importance of …

Recognizing Indians: Place, Identity, History, And The Federal Acknowledgment Of The Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, Philip Blair Laverty Jul 2010

Recognizing Indians: Place, Identity, History, And The Federal Acknowledgment Of The Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, Philip Blair Laverty

Anthropology ETDs

Long considered extinct,' in 1992 the Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation (OCEN) began its bid to achieve federal acknowledgment as an American Indian tribe. This dissertation is a study of the history of the Native peoples of the Monterey Bay region and the current recognition efforts of OCEN. Using ethnographic and ethnohistorical methodologies and the fieldnotes of John Peabody Harrington as a key archive, it focuses on social and cultural aspects of identity change and community persistence, particularly in relation to land and place. It explores contemporary understandings of precontact political organization as they presently affect the Esselen Nation in the context of …

"Some", And Possibly All, Scalar Inferences Are Not Delayed: Evidence For Immediate Pragmatic Enrichment, Daniel J. Grodner, N. M. Klein, K. M. Carbary, M. K. Tanenhaus

Psychology Faculty Works

Scalar inferences are commonly generated when a speaker uses a weaker expression rather than a stronger alternative, e.g., John ate some of the apples implies that he did not eat them all. This article describes a visual-world study investigating how and when perceivers compute these inferences. Participants followed spoken instructions containing the scalar quantifier some directing them to interact with one of several referential targets (e.g., Click on the girl who has some of the balloons). Participants fixated on the target compatible with the implicated meaning of some and avoided a competitor compatible with the literal meaning prior to a …
