Analysis Of Alternative Methods For Long-Term Wind Speed And Initial Site Assessment For Purposes Of Wind Energy Production Estimation, Ryan Mcdevitt Sep 2010

Analysis Of Alternative Methods For Long-Term Wind Speed And Initial Site Assessment For Purposes Of Wind Energy Production Estimation, Ryan Mcdevitt

Theses and Dissertations

A need exists for identification and evaluation of viable sites for wind energy. However, this is made difficult by the site-specific nature of the wind. A review of current industry practices shows that linear regression is the preferred method, although little work has been done to investigate alternative approaches. To address this, various methods were tested on 23 target sites with data measured over a long-term period. Each site was analyzed with the chosen best reference station, across 10 data periods for each method with results classified as mean absolute percentage error in energy density between the projected and measured …

An Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Single Mothers In Higher Education : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Kelly Lyn Chandler Sep 2010

An Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Single Mothers In Higher Education : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Kelly Lyn Chandler

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of single mothers in graduate school. Past research indicates heightened rates of psychiatric distress among single mothers (Jayakody and Stauffer, 2000) as well as overrepresentation of single mothers living in poverty (Kates, 1996; Zhan and Pandey, 2004). Qualitative studies on single mothers within post-secondary and undergraduate programs exist, but little research has been done on those obtaining graduate level degrees. This descriptive study included past or present students who maintained single parent status as well as had at least one child under the age of six during program enrollment. Data …

Hydrophilanthropy, Wash, And Experiential Learning In Developing Countries, Michael E. Campana Sep 2010

Hydrophilanthropy, Wash, And Experiential Learning In Developing Countries, Michael E. Campana

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Two different and unrelated programs are described, one undergraduate and one graduate, that: 1) introduced students to water research and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) issues in developing countries; 2) injected developing countries' WASH issues into a university graduate water resources program; and 3) introduced hydrophilanthropy, defined as the altruistic concern for the water, sanitation, and related needs of humankind, as manifested by donations of labor, money, or resources. From 2002 through 2004, a National Science Foundation summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program hosted by University of Notre Dame with University of Nevada-Reno and University of New Mexico took undergraduates …

The Power Of Relationships : Long-Term Outcomes For Older Adults With A History Of Interpersonal Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Miriam Lasden Elwell Sep 2010

The Power Of Relationships : Long-Term Outcomes For Older Adults With A History Of Interpersonal Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Miriam Lasden Elwell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The research question of this theoretical thesis was to examine the manifestation of prior trauma in the older adult population. Previous research focused mainly on interpersonal trauma theory. The literature on elders who were survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma was minimal. The experiences of older adults who have a history of interpersonal trauma were further examined through attachment theory and Relationalcultural theory. Attachment theory speaks to the difficultly of a child exposed to prolonged interpersonal trauma to develop an adaptive method to regulate affect and seek help from others when distressed. These experiences later influence the relational capabilities of the …

How Does Bullying In The Workplace Impact Mental Health Professionals : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Hilary Sara Garrison-Botsford

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Numerous forms of aggression in the workplace have been systematically studied in recent years; however, there is a gap in the literature with regards to the mental health field. The present study used a mixed method approach to examine the impact of workplace bullying on mental health professionals (n=48). Data were collected using an anonymous online survey containing The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), a standardized measure of workplace bullying. The NAQ assessed frequency of exposure to bullying behaviors during the previous six months while multiple choice questions and comment/essay boxes obtained further information about participants' experiences with bullying, perceptions of …

Therapist Self-Disclosure : A Current Look At Therapists' Attitudes And Practices : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Allyson Lynn Mazzuchi

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to examine the current views of therapist selfdisclosure among clinicians practicing in the field today. The study examined what factors effect self-disclosure, such as a therapist's years of experience, the population they are working with and their own experience in therapy. Therapists who participated had to have a minimum of five years working in the mental health field. Sixty-two therapists participated by filling out an anonymous survey. Therapists rated how often they used self-disclosure. Next therapists answered questions regarding how and when they decided to use self-disclosure and what their own experiences were with self-disclosure in …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examines to what extent African American gay males who frequent the black barbershop share in their expressions of sexuality and masculinity while in the barbershop. The study further investigates the influence of the black barbershop on African American gay males and their comfort with expressing their masculinity and sexuality in this setting and the notion that the black barbershop functions as a microcosm of the black community, by reinforcing heterosexist philosophies. The participants, eight self-identified African American gay men, were recruited by word-of-mouth and snowball sampling. The researcher administered a demographic survey and interviewed participants about their …

Maternal Perception Of Child Vulnerability In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Peggy Maclean Sep 2010

Maternal Perception Of Child Vulnerability In Preschoolers Born Very Low Birth Weight, Peggy Maclean

Psychology ETDs

Research suggests that mothers of children born preterm are at high risk of perceiving their children as vulnerable even long after their childrens health has improved. Although studies have examined the prevalence of maternal perception of child vulnerability within children born preterm, few studies have examined the relationship between maternal perception of child vulnerability and observed maternal behaviors, and the contextual factors associated with perceived vulnerability. The current study sought to examine the relationship between perceived vulnerability and observed maternal behavior (i.e., maternal overprotection, maternal hostility, and maternal responsiveness); clarify the relative role of health-related variables (i.e., neonatal illness severity, …

Moving Through And Beyond : A Qualitative Exploration Of Self-Identified Gender Nonconforming Participants' Experiences Of Binary Gender Regulation, Ellen C. Daly

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study was undertaken to explore, and bring into social work discourse, gender nonconforming participants' experiences and meaning-making of binary gender regulation, specifically within relational contexts throughout their lives. Qualitative interviews were completed with 13 participants who identified with the descriptor of gender nonconforming in some way. The following questions were explored: How does the binary gender system become reproduced, maintained, enforced, and regulated through the lives of those who do not, and many times choose not, to adhere to and/or embody the constrictive and limiting expectations of this system? How is such regulation understood and internalized? What are …

Pathology, Risk, And Emancipation : The Impact Of Dominant Discourse On Lgbtq Youth In Out-Of-Home Care : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jill Christine Mccullough

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Currently, there is a scarcity of comprehensive research that has addressed the experiences and service needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth who enter public and private out-of-home care settings. However, existing literature has illustrated significant experiences of discrimination and victimization related to the sexual identity, gender identity, and/or gender expression of these youth from both caregivers and peers in public out-of-home care settings. The purpose of this study is to critically examine the impact of dominant discourse or "master narratives" of LGBTQ identity development on the lives of those youth who enter out-of-home care settings. Recent …

A Call To Action: Proposing A University Network For Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene, Melinda Laituri, Faith Sternlieb, Reagan Waskom

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water is the critical concern of countries around the world due to increasing population and environmental change. The Paul Simon Water for the World Act, passed in early 2010, aims to provide support and funding for the provision of safe water and sanitation. Universities are uniquely poised to address solutions and assessments of efforts to address water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). This paper outlines a "call to action" for universities to collectively address WASH issues by establishing a network that identifies experts, links resources, and builds partnerships.

Girls Just Want To Be Funny : The Potential For Increased Self-Esteem, Self-Efficacy And Empowerment Through All-Female Comedy Groups : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Elizabeth S. Ehrenberg

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Offenders under the age of 18 account for 16.7% of arrests or convictions of forcible rapes and 20.61% of other sexual offenses (U.S. Department of Justice: CSOM, 2000). This study attempts to uncover emotional responses to crimes committed by adolescent sex offenders, particularly guilt and shame responses. Researchers have found that, despite their seeming interchangeability, guilt and shame can be considered separate emotional responses. These emotions can lead to differing behaviors and actions, with guilt typically resulting in a more pro-social response. For the purposes of this study, guilt and shame responses of adolescent sex offenders were explored, in comparison …
