Validity Of Self-Report With Respect To Prescription Medications Among Pregnant Women, Pallavi Jaiswal
Validity Of Self-Report With Respect To Prescription Medications Among Pregnant Women, Pallavi Jaiswal
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Objectives: Accuracy of self-report regarding prescription medication use among pregnant women is largely unknown. Accurate self-reported information is needed for medication reconciliation purposes, clinical management, clinical teratology research, and monitoring of adherence. This study examined the accuracy of self-reported medication use by pregnant women for medications used chronically and episodically or intermittently during pregnancy. Further, predictors of inaccurate reporting regarding prescription medication use were also estimated. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of data collected through the University of New Mexico (UNM) cohort study, Safety of Medication and Perception of Teratogenicity' (SMART) was conducted. Pregnant women were recruited from UNM prenatal care …
Non-Medical Use, Abuse Of, And Dependence On Prescription Drugs : Relationship Between Socio-Demographic Factors And Health Insurance Coverage, Vishal Bali
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Background: Previous studies have found that health insurance and other socio-demographic factors are important predictors of non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD), their abuse and dependence, and use of substance abuse treatment. However, the effect of health insurance in specific subgroups of population on NMUPD, their abuse and dependence, and use of substance abuse treatment, is largely unknown. Objective: To determine if the effect of health insurance on NMUPD, their abuse and dependence, and use of substance abuse treatment differs by socio-demographic factors. The study also aims to identify prescription drugs that are used non-medically and to assess the relationship …

Longitudinal Penalized Functional Regression, Jeff Goldsmith, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, Daniel Reich
Longitudinal Penalized Functional Regression, Jeff Goldsmith, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, Daniel Reich
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We propose a new regression model and inferential tools for the case when both the outcome and the functional exposures are observed at multiple visits. This data structure is new but increasingly present in applications where functions or images are recorded at multiple times. This raises new inferential challenges that cannot be addressed with current methods and software. Our proposed model generalizes the Generalized Linear Mixed Effects Model (GLMM) by adding functional predictors. Smoothness of the functional coefficients is ensured using roughness penalties estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) in a corresponding mixed effects model. This method is computationally feasible …

Integrative Literature Review Emotional Intelligence And Its Relationship To Transformational Leadership, Katharine Ellingson
Integrative Literature Review Emotional Intelligence And Its Relationship To Transformational Leadership, Katharine Ellingson
Theses and Graduate Projects
A common topic referenced in leadership books and articles is how to be an effective leader. Many of these resources suggest high emotional intelligence is related to effective leadership. In addition, they reference transformational leadership as being highly effective. The purpose of this integrative literature review is to provide an overview, critique and synthesis of past research that looks at the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. This analysis includes thoroughly examining the existing controversies of these two theories and providing suggestions for future research so this field of study can continue to evolve and provide value to the …
Does Clinical Distress Impact Attempts To Moderate In Problem Drinkers? : Analysis Of Outcomes From A Randomized Clinical Trial, William Campbell
Does Clinical Distress Impact Attempts To Moderate In Problem Drinkers? : Analysis Of Outcomes From A Randomized Clinical Trial, William Campbell
Psychology ETDs
This study examined the relationship between participants level of psychological distress and their attempts to control their problematic alcohol consumption in a randomized clinical trial comparing two web-based Behavioral Self-Control Training (BSCT) interventions. Potential participants in the trial were screened for both severe mental illness and symptoms of alcohol dependence. Based on prevailing theories, as well as research on individuals diagnosed with co-morbid anxious or mood disorders with alcohol use disorders, it was hypothesized that participants reporting higher levels of clinical distress would have worse outcomes. However, the results of this trial demonstrated that participants reporting higher levels of clinical …
Ethnicity And Health In Cervical Cancer Survivors : Understanding Vulnerability And Resilience, J. Alexis Ortiz
Ethnicity And Health In Cervical Cancer Survivors : Understanding Vulnerability And Resilience, J. Alexis Ortiz
Psychology ETDs
Health disparities among U.S. Hispanic populations continue to be a significant and costly public health concern. Both vulnerability and resilience factors may play a crucial role in understanding the extent of health disparities in a disease and may lead to better ways for reducing the disparities. The purpose of this study was to examine potential vulnerability and resilience factors that may explain differences in health and functioning between Hispanic (n = 52) and Non-Hispanic White (NHW; n = 135) cervical cancer survivors. New Mexico Tumor Registry participants diagnosed with cervical cancer completed general physical and mental health questionnaires including a …
Eliciting Abstinence And Improving Retention In A Vocational And Educational Training Program For Young People : A Pilot Study, Julie Steele Seel
Eliciting Abstinence And Improving Retention In A Vocational And Educational Training Program For Young People : A Pilot Study, Julie Steele Seel
Psychology ETDs
There is support in the literature for motivational enhancement therapy (MET) as an acceptable method for achieving abstinence and increasing retention in therapy for the treatment of marijuana and alcohol abuse, and for contingency management (CM) as a useful tool for enhancing both of these objectives when combined with empirically supported therapies such as MET. However, MET combined with CM had yet to be tested with substance using adolescents and young adults enrolled in a substance use program in a vocational and educational training facility. This study examined the effectiveness of an MET and CM program designed to provide opportunities …
