Student Volunteer Opportunities In Hydrophilanthropy: The Steps To Organizing A Successful Project, Cathleen M. Fitzgerald Sep 2010

Student Volunteer Opportunities In Hydrophilanthropy: The Steps To Organizing A Successful Project, Cathleen M. Fitzgerald

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

University students who travel internationally become de facto ambassadors not only of their country but also of their universities and colleges. Therefore, it is important that all hydrophilantropy projects include awareness of cross-cultural differences and include community participation and involvement during the early planning stages. Schedules should not be so ambitious that the project cannot be completed in the allotted time period and multiple trips to the same community are essential to assess the effectiveness and sustainability of completed projects. Low-tech water supply technologies that are affordable, easily replicable, and require minimal or no outside monetary assistance are the keys …

Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene (Wash) Indicators: Measuring Hydrophilanthropic Quality, Faith R. Sternlieb, Melinda Laituri Sep 2010

Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene (Wash) Indicators: Measuring Hydrophilanthropic Quality, Faith R. Sternlieb, Melinda Laituri

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The driving institutional mechanisms behind solutions for increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene for the poor are driven by hydrophilanthropy, monies donated by non-government organizations to create solutions to problems caused by water poverty. Water poverty is the stress and/or scarcity of water resources (institutional, social, economic, political and/or physical constraints) that exceed an individual's basic needs for health, prosperity and a secure livelihood. Hydrophilanthropic organizations have emerged from the institutional landscape as water advocates and are responsible for contributing unequivocal resources towards ameliorating social, environmental, cultural and economic consequences resulting from water poverty, however, results from their contributions …

Rethinking Hydrophilanthropy: Smart Money For Transformative Impact, Edward D. Breslin Sep 2010

Rethinking Hydrophilanthropy: Smart Money For Transformative Impact, Edward D. Breslin

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The water sector is dominated by a handful of images – poor people collecting water from unprotected sources, or the converse of a happy child lapping fresh water from a newly provided water source. While compelling, this imagery is not entirely accurate. Sadly, the water sector does not have a particularly good track record of transformative success, despite the rhetoric and imagery to the contrary. A better picture might be one of a woman walking past a broken water point, on her way back to the polluted water source she had hoped was abandoned forever. The water sector needs to …

The Restorative Effects Of Smoking Upon Self-Control Resources, Bryan W. Heckman Sep 2010

The Restorative Effects Of Smoking Upon Self-Control Resources, Bryan W. Heckman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Based on a model that considers self-control (SC) to be a limited resource, research suggests that diminished SC resources increase the likelihood of smoking. Yet, no study has evaluated how smoking affects SC resources. This study used a randomized, 2 x 2 crossed factorial (SC depletion manipulation X smoking manipulation), between-subjects design to test the hypothesis that smoking restores depleted SC resources. To manipulate SC depletion, half of the 132 dependent smokers were instructed to suppress their emotional reaction to a brief video depicting environmental damage (i.e., Depletion), whereas the other half were instructed to “act natural” (i.e., No Depletion) …

On The Use Of Independent Component Analysis & Functional Network Connectivity Analysis: Evaluation On Two Distinct Large-Scale Psychopathology Studies, Michelle Juárez Sep 2010

On The Use Of Independent Component Analysis & Functional Network Connectivity Analysis: Evaluation On Two Distinct Large-Scale Psychopathology Studies, Michelle Juárez

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Medical image analysis techniques are becoming ever useful in allowing us to better understand the complexities and constructs of the brain and its functions. These analysis methods have proven to be integral in revealing trends in brain activity within individuals with mental disorders that are distinguishable from what would be considered normal' activity within healthy populations. This has led us to gaining a better understanding of functional connectivity within the brain, especially within populations suffering from mental disorders. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is one of the leading techniques currently being implemented to explore cognitive function and aberrant brain activity …

Engineering Academic Programs For Hydrophilanthropy: Commonalities And Challenges, Stephen Silliman, Rabi H. Mohtar, Kurtis Paterson, William P. Ball

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This paper presents four different program models for student participation in international development that are being used by universities throughout the United States with a focus on international water resource projects. These include a service-oriented program (Engineers Without Borders at Johns Hopkins University), a senior design program (Global Design Teams at Purdue University), an extended research program (Long Term Research at the University of Notre Dame), and a graduate program affiliated with the Peace Corps (The Peace Corps Master's International Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University). Differences and commonalities are identified across the four models, as …

Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego Sep 2010

Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego

Nursing ETDs

Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome that primarily affects the aged and is the most common hospital discharge diagnosis for adults in the United States. Readmission is common following discharge from an acute hospital stay for HF. Patients with HF suffer more depressive morbidity than other patients with cardiovascular disease, and many age 65 or older experience social isolation. This prospective exploratory study examined whether readmission within 30 to 60 days of discharge from an index hospitalization for HF was associated with depressive symptoms or social isolation. A convenience sample of 101 patients participated during an index hospitalization for HF. …

Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen Sep 2010

Are Thermotolerance And Heat Acclimation Related Through The Heat Shock Response?, Matthew Kuennen

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Thermotolerance (cellular adaptations that allow survival after an acute, severe heat exposure) and heat acclimation (systemic adaptations that improve heat dissipation following chronic heat exposure) have traditionally been considered separate phenomena. However, recent studies in animals suggest these adaptations may be related through the heat shock response. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of a standard laboratory heat shock response-inhibitor (QUERCETIN) on established markers of thermotolerance [gastrointestinal barrier permeability, plasma TNF-a, Il-6, and Il-10 concentrations; leukocyte HSP70 content(HSP70)] and heat acclimation [reduced body temperatures, heart rate, and physiologic strain in response to exercise/heat stress] in male subjects (n=8) completing a 7-day …

Quantifying Uncertainty In Reliability Block Diagrams, Bea Yu Sep 2010

Quantifying Uncertainty In Reliability Block Diagrams, Bea Yu

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Reliability analysis yields statistically derived technical system performance estimates. Traditional reliability analysis employs classical statistical techniques predicated upon asymptotic properties of large data sets. Not uncommonly, however, medium to small data sets constrain analysis efforts for high risk systems characterized by significant danger or cost. This paper outlines a general reliability analysis paradigm to contend with small to medium data sets. Preliminary sensitivity analysis using scatter plots and tests for non-randomness reveals component-level drivers in system-level performance measures. Comprehensive data collection efforts targeting all available, high-quality information sources decrease and allow analysts to estimate uncertainty in model parameters describing driving …

The Benefits Of Contaminated Site Cleanup Revisited: The Case Of Naples And Caserta, Italy, Anna Alberini, Milan Ščasný, Dennis Guignet, Stefania Tonin Sep 2010

The Benefits Of Contaminated Site Cleanup Revisited: The Case Of Naples And Caserta, Italy, Anna Alberini, Milan Ščasný, Dennis Guignet, Stefania Tonin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Guerriero and Cairns (2009) recently estimate that contaminated sites and improper waste management result in 848 excess deaths per year in the provinces of Naples and Caserta in Southern Italy, 403 of which are fatal cancers. In the absence of estimates of the Value of a Prevented Fatality (VPF) in Italy or specific to the hazardous waste context, they use figures recommended by DG-Environment. Contrary to their claims, estimates of the VPF are available for Italy that are specific to the hazardous waste context, and for causes of death that have been linked to contaminated site exposures. We review them …

Job Instability And Family Planning: Insights From The Italian Puzzle, Fabio Sabatini Sep 2010

Job Instability And Family Planning: Insights From The Italian Puzzle, Fabio Sabatini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper carries out an investigation into the socio-economic determinants of couples’ childbearing decisions in Italy. Since having children is in most cases a “couple matter”, the analysis accounts for the characteristics of both the possible parents. Our results do not support established theoretical predictions according to which the increase in the opportunity cost of motherhood connected to higher female labour participation is responsible for the fall in fertility. On the contrary, the instability of the women’s work status (i.e. their being occasional, precarious, and low-paid workers) reveals to be a significant dissuasive deterrent discouraging the decision to have children. …

Assessing China’S Energy Conservation And Carbon Intensity: How Will The Future Differ From The Past?, Zhongxiang Zhang Sep 2010

Assessing China’S Energy Conservation And Carbon Intensity: How Will The Future Differ From The Past?, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

As an important step towards building a “harmonious society” through “scientific development”, China has incorporated for the first time in its five-year economic plan an energy input indicator as a constraint. While it achieved a quadrupling of its GDP while cutting its energy intensity by about three quarters between 1980 and 2000, China has had limited success in achieving its own 20% energy-saving goal set for 2010 to date. Despite this great challenge at home, just prior to the Copenhagen climate summit, China pledged to cut its carbon intensity by 40-45% by 2020 relative its 2005 levels to help to …

Interactions Between State And Federal Climate Change Policies, Lawrence H. Goulder, Robert N. Stavins Sep 2010

Interactions Between State And Federal Climate Change Policies, Lawrence H. Goulder, Robert N. Stavins

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Federal action addressing climate change is likely to emerge either through new legislation or via the U.S. EPA’s authority under the Clean Air Act. The prospect of federal action raises important questions regarding the interconnections between federal efforts and state-level climate policy developments. In the presence of federal policies, to what extent will state efforts be cost-effective? How does the co-existence of state- and federal-level policies affect the ability of state efforts to achieve emissions reductions? This paper addresses these questions. We find that state-level policy in the presence of a federal policy can be beneficial or problematic, depending on …

On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice Sep 2010

On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Kooperberg and LeBlanc (2008) proposed a two-stage testing procedure to screen for significant interactions in genome-wide association (GWA) studies by a soft threshold on marginal associations (MA), though its theoretical properties and generalization have not been elaborated. In this article, we discuss conditions that are required to achieve strong control of the Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER) by such procedures for low or high-dimensional hypothesis testing. We provide proof of asymptotic independence of marginal association statistics and interaction statistics in linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazard models in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) with a rare event. In case-control …

Engaging With Employers In Economic Downturn, Lyndsey El Amoud, Joan Buckley Sep 2010

Engaging With Employers In Economic Downturn, Lyndsey El Amoud, Joan Buckley

Conference Papers

There has been an increasing focus on personal transferable skills by universities (Albrecht and Sack 2000). This has led to considerable growth in the number of placement programmes in undergraduate courses in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). As noted by Paisey and Paisey (2009) relatively little research has been carried out in this domain. This paper explores the state of non-clinical placement programmes in third level institutes in Ireland. It presents the results of the first comprehensive survey of placement in Irish. The survey reveals the scale and scope of work placement programmes in undergraduate courses in Ireland. With more …
