Risky Activities And Strict Liability Rules: Delegating Safety, Gérard Mondello Sep 2010

Risky Activities And Strict Liability Rules: Delegating Safety, Gérard Mondello

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper studies the delegation of activities that pose serious risks to health and the environment in an economy regulated by strict liability schemes. Strict liability induces judgment-proof possibilities. Two civil liability regimes are then compared: a strict liability scheme and a capped strict liability one. The argument is led under a twofold asymmetric information assumption between the principal and the agent: the efficiency level in effort for safety and the agent’s level of wealth. The paper shows that standard strict liability under information asymmetries deters the efficient agent to compete and favors adverse selection. Then, under conditions, a capped …

The Economic Impact Of The Green Certificate Market Through The Macro Multiplier Approach, Maurizio Ciaschini, Francesca Severini, Claudio Socci, Rosita Pretaroli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the last decade, as many other European countries, the Italian Government adopted several reforms in order to increase the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The liberalization of the electricity market that represents one of these reforms aims to reach environmental benefits from the substitution of fossil fuel with renewable sources. The Italian Green Certificate market was introduced in 2002 in order to accomplish this objective and represents a mechanism where a quota of renewable electricity is imposed to suppliers in proportion to their sales. The electricity industries are obliged to meet this condition by producing the quantity of …

Introduction

Interchangeable with holy/sacred book, “scriptures” is the English language term that is still popularly used to refer to a text or collection of texts deemed to be of special if not unique origins, authority and power. Users of the term also tend to assume that “the Bible” of the Jewish and Christian traditions represents either the only instance of such or the example par excellence among some others. A popular linguistic and rhetorical placeholder among cultures of Indo-European origins, the English term originally simply meant (from the Greek graphe/-ai, ta biblia; Latin, scriptura/-ae; Hebrew, ketav/-uvim) and continues to mean …

Antioxidant Polymorphisms And Susceptibility To Solvent- Induced Hearing Loss In Factory Workers, Robert Udell Glazier Sep 2010

Antioxidant Polymorphisms And Susceptibility To Solvent- Induced Hearing Loss In Factory Workers, Robert Udell Glazier

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Occupational exposure-related hearing loss is a significant health concern for affected workers. Organic solvent exposure has emerged as an important contributor to hearing loss. It is thought that hearing loss related to solvent and noise exposure is mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The glutathione associated enzymes and the manganese superoxide dismutase enzymes (SOD2) are important components of the cochlear hair cellâs defense against oxidative stress. This study is aimed to determine whether polymorphisms within the glutathione S-transferases (GST) P1 and GSTM1, glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1), and SOD2 are associated with hearing status in solvent exposed factory workers. Genotypes for …

Decision Making By Patients Awaiting Kidney Transplant, Daniel Solomon Sep 2010

Decision Making By Patients Awaiting Kidney Transplant, Daniel Solomon

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Involving patients in medical decisions by acknowledging patients personal values and individual preferences has become an important goal of providing ethical medical care. Despite a general movement towards a model of shared decision-making, many patients do not fully meet their preferred role in practice. The decision whether or not to accept a kidney once it is offered to a patient awaiting transplant has historically been made predominantly by the transplant surgeon with little involvement from the patient. Because dialysis can provide long-term renal replacement, declining a kidney is a viable option. Patient changes over time and inherent heterogeneity of donor …

A Mi'kmaq First Nation Cosmology: Investigating The Practice Of Contemporary Aboriginal Traditional Medicine In Dialogue With Counselling – Toward An Indigenous Therapeutics, Kisiku Sa'qawei Paq'tism Randolph Bowers Sep 2010

A Mi'kmaq First Nation Cosmology: Investigating The Practice Of Contemporary Aboriginal Traditional Medicine In Dialogue With Counselling – Toward An Indigenous Therapeutics, Kisiku Sa'qawei Paq'tism Randolph Bowers

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper explores from a Mi’kmaq and Aboriginal standpoint foundational knowledge in Indigenous therapeutics. Based on an eco-social-psycho-spiritual way of working, the article proposes Indigenous cultural models that open a window to a rich cultural repository of meanings associated with Indigenous cosmology, ontology and epistemology. The three layers of meaning, theory and practice within the symbolic ‘Medicine Lodge’ or ‘Place of The Dreaming’ give rise to ways of working that are deeply integrative and wholistic. These forms of Indigenous theory and practice have much to offer the counselling and complimentary health professions.

Gender Identity Development In Individuals With Autism : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Emily Green Kalafarski

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the development of gender identity in children with autism. This research asked "Do people on the autism spectrum acquire gender identity differently than those who are neurotypically developing?" It was hypothesized that those on the autism spectrum did acquire gender identity differently, and that this process may be more influenced by individual cognition than social learning. This was a descriptive study that was cross-sectional in nature. Young adults were asked retrospective questions in a mixed-methods survey that was conducted on the internet. A sample of 29 participants comprised this study. No clear …

Through Children's Eyes : Understanding Visible And Invisible Injury In Military Parents : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Meredith Grace Morray

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores how young children (age 5-11) experience and develop empathy about parents who are suffering from physical and psychological injuries. This study was based on a Sesame Workshop film which depicts five families with a parent returning from war with either a visible (arm or leg amputation) or an invisible (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury) wound. Children of military families (n= 28 children) and children of civilian families (n= 42 children) comprised the study sample. Focus groups based on a semi-structured interview guide were conducted after the viewing of the film. Findings indicated children's …

An allogeneic bone marrow transplant is the infusion of healthy blood stem cells from a related or unrelated person, called a …

An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell Sep 2010

An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Despite the growing body of knowledge regarding psychopathy among adolescent sex offenders, additional research is still necessary. In this study I examine four measures of juvenile psychopathy (Childhood Psychopathy Scale, Antisocial Process Screening Device, Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory, and Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits) in a sample of 191 incarcerated adolescent sex offenders located in juvenile detention facilities in a Midwestern state. I examine how the diverse scales relate to characteristics of sexual aggression and non-sexual criminality, and which scale specifically has the best predictive validity for sexual as well as non-sexual crime. Of the four instruments and nine …

How Do California Early Start Providers Address The Social And Emotional Wellbeing Of Infants And Toddlers With Developmental Disabilties? : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah F. Muchnick Sep 2010

How Do California Early Start Providers Address The Social And Emotional Wellbeing Of Infants And Toddlers With Developmental Disabilties? : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah F. Muchnick

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

136 providers of services to infants, toddlers and their families were surveyed in order to gain information concerning assessment and intervention in social/emotional development and parent/child relationships. Programmatic philosophies were examined, as well as participants' direct experience with assessment, intervention, access to mental health resources, and experiences of supervision. Findings revealed an understanding of the importance of social/emotional development in assessing development and revealed that educational strategies were used more often than those that addressed the thoughts and feelings of practitioners and families. A majority of providers received individual supervision to review cases, but fewer received reflective supervision that addressed …

Edward Purdue, Xin-Ming Liu, Michael D. Boska, Subodh M. Lele, Geoffrey M. Thiele, Ted R. Mikuls, Huanyu Dou, Steven R. Goldring, Dong Wang

Journal Articles: Radiology

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the present manuscript is to test the hypothesis that arthrotropic localization and synovial cell internalization account for the unique capacity of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymer-dexamethasone conjugate (P-Dex, a macromolecular prodrug of dexamethasone) to induce sustained amelioration of joint inflammation and inhibition of tissue damage in an animal model of inflammatory arthritis.

METHODS: Rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) were treated with P-Dex, free dexamethasone, saline or HPMA homopolymer. To define the biodistribution of P-Dex, conjugates with different imaging labels were given to AA rats and analyzed. Isolated joint tissues were evaluated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and immunohistochemical …

Heads Or Tails: L1 Insertion-Associated 5' Homopolymeric Sequences, Thomas J. Meyer, Deepa Srikanta, Erin M. Conlin, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background. L1s are one of the most successful autonomous mobile elements in primate genomes. These elements comprise as much as 17% of primate genomes with the majority of insertions occurring via target primed reverse transcription (TPRT). Twin priming, a variant of TPRT, can result in unusual DNA sequence architecture. These insertions appear to be inverted, truncated L1s flanked by target site duplications. Results. We report on loci with sequence architecture consistent with variants of the twin priming mechanism and introduce dual priming, a mechanism that could generate similar sequence characteristics. These insertions take the form of truncated L1s with hallmarks …

‘The Grass That Gets Trampled When Elephants Fight’: Will The Codification Of The Crime Of Aggression Protect Women?, Beth Van Schaack

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the outcome of the Kampala process with an eye toward the rarely-considered gender aspects of the crime of aggression, whether or not the provisions adopted represent an advancement for women, and how aspects of feminist theory might interpret the new regime. The Article concludes that any impact of the provisions will inevitably be limited by gaps and ambiguities in the definition of the crime and the jurisdictional regime, which is premised on state consent and exempts non-states parties altogether. At the same time, the insertion of the crime of aggression in the Rome Statute enables the prosecution …

To evaluate the apoptosis involvement in the angiogenesis as a self-limiting process in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degenerated disc vessels, we assessed, by immunohistochemistry, the detection of TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3. TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3 expression were studied by immunohistochemistry in 15 TMJ discs displaced without reduction and in 4 unaffected discs. These apoptosis molecules were detected in the intima and media layers of newly formed vessels affected discs. In conclusion, vessels apoptosis activation in TMJ disc with ID could be regarded as a self-limiting process that try to leads to …
