Demographic And Clinical Features Of Dengue Fever In Pakistan From 2003-2007: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study., Erum Khan, Mehreen Kisat, Nabil Khan, Amna Nasir, Salma Ayub, Rumina Hasan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Demographic features of dengue fever have changed tremendously in Pakistan over the past two decades. Small scale studies from all over the country have reported different aspects of individual outbreaks during this time. However, there is scarcity of data looking at the overall trend of dengue virus infection in the country. In this study, we examined annual trends, seasonality, and clinical features of dengue fever in the Pakistani population.
Methods: Demographic information and dengue IgM status of all patients tested for dengue IgM antibody at Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2003 to December 2007 were analyzed to look …

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi Sep 2010

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi

Theses and Dissertations

Individual differences in temperament can be a risk or a protective factor for a child, especially for children at-risk who possess single or multiple risk factors that may interfere with their educational success and affect their healthy development and their life-long outcomes. This research study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relationships between temperament, school adjustment, and academic achievement in children at-risk. Seventy-seven children, ages five to 11 years, were reassessed two years after an initial study. Their teachers completed the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children (TABC), the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), and reported on the children's academic achievement. …

Ancestry Estimation In A Web-Based, Searchable Database Of Orthodontic Case Files For Patient Care, Education, And Research, Philip J. Kroth, Heather J.H. Edgar, Edward F. Harris, Summers Kalishman, Shamsi Daneshvari

Posters and Presentations

In 2005, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology accepted a donation of orthodontic patient records from an orthodontist who has been practicing in the Albuquerque area since the early 1970s. This collection represents a diversity of patients not often encountered in orthodontic training in the United States. A virtual, de-identified, web-based version of a subset of the collection is now being developed. Users can search for cases with particular characteristics of interest (e.g., patient ancestry, extraction patterns, diagnoses, and cephalometric parameters), then review sequential intra-oral and Xray images to observe treatment outcomes. An innovative feature of the database is that it …

Selective Self-Categorization: Meaningful Categorization And The In-Group Persuasion Effect, Na Wyer Sep 2010

Selective Self-Categorization: Meaningful Categorization And The In-Group Persuasion Effect, Na Wyer

School of Psychology

Research stemming from self-categorization theory (Turner et al., 1987) has demonstrated that individuals are typically more persuaded by messages from their in-group than by messages from the out-group. The present research investigated the role of issue relevance in moderating these effects. In particular, it was predicted that in-groups would only be more persuasive when the dimension on which group membership was defined was meaningful or relevant to the attitude issue. In two studies, participants were presented with persuasive arguments from either an in-group source or an out-group source, where the basis of the in-group/out-group distinction was either relevant or irrelevant …

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler Sep 2010

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler

Psychology ETDs

This study tested the relationship between short-term neuroplasticity and individual differences in intelligence. Twenty-two participants completed cognitive testing and a visual EEG experiment involving exposures to repeated and novel stimuli. Time-frequency analyses of phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced) power showed a small effect of decreasing evoked/induced theta (4-8 Hz) ratios over stimulus exposures, irrespective of condition. Hypotheses that intelligence would relate to an increase in this ratio over exposures were not supported. However, the magnitude of the ratio positively correlated with intelligence; while the amount of induced gamma (30-50Hz) activation pre- to post-stimulus was highly inversely related to g. Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman Sep 2010

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman

Psychology ETDs

The association between oxidative stress and quality of romantic relationships was investigated in a sample of 98 college males. Given a postulated life history trade-off between current and future reproductive potential, men currently in higher quality romantic relationships may expend less general mating effort (i.e., less energy allocation to finding, attracting, and competing for new mates) than single men or men in lesser quality relationships. Reduced mating effort may allow greater allocation of energy to anti-oxidant defense systems, and increased resistance to oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consistent with this prediction, men who reported being in higher quality …
